Capillary Electrophoresis Of Proteins With Selective On-Line Affinity Monoliths, Jenny Marcela Armenta Blanco Nov 2006

Capillary Electrophoresis Of Proteins With Selective On-Line Affinity Monoliths, Jenny Marcela Armenta Blanco

Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of proteins in biological fluids by capillary electrophoresis (CE) is of interest in clinical chemistry. However, due to low analyte concentrations and poor concentration limits of detection (CLOD), protein analysis by this technique is frequently challenging. Coupling preconcentration techniques with CE greatly improves the CLOD. An on-line preconcentration-CE method that can selectively preconcentrate any protein for which an antibody is available would be very useful for the analysis of low abundance proteins and would establish CE as a major tool in biomarker discovery. To accomplish this, an on-line protein G monolithic preconcentrator CE system for enrichment and separation …

Bringing Evidence-Based Child Mental Health Services To The Schools: General Issues And Specific Populations, Carrie Masia-Warner, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Epidemiological research indicates a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents. Approximately 21% of children and adolescents, ages 9 to 17, have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder (Costello et al., 1996; Shaffer et al., 1996; U.S. Public Health Service, 2000), and additional youngsters experience social and emotional difficulties that do not meet symptom criteria for a disorder but cause considerable distress and impairment in functioning. Unfortunately, there is a significant gap between the many youth who are in need of treatment and those who actually receive menfal health care (Burns et al., 1995; Leaf et al., 1996). According to …

Use Of Xenopus Laevis Oocytes A Microincubators, Sergei Paylian Nov 2006

Use Of Xenopus Laevis Oocytes A Microincubators, Sergei Paylian

USF Patents

The present invention concerns methods for de-differentiation and stabilize cells, such as progenitor cells, by introducing the cells into the cytoplasm of host oocytes, such as Xenopus laevis oocytes. Advantageously, this method obviates the need for any nuclear transfer procedure, which is known to disrupt the chromosomal architecture of donor and recipient cells. The present invention also concerns host oocytes encapsulating cells that have been introduced into their cytoplasm. The present invention also concerns cells that have been removed from the host oocytes.

Rhob As A Suppressor Of Cancer Cell Growth, Cell Transformation, And Metastasis, Said M. Sebti Nov 2006

Rhob As A Suppressor Of Cancer Cell Growth, Cell Transformation, And Metastasis, Said M. Sebti

USF Patents

The present invention concerns the use of the protein RhoB and its variants to inhibit cancer cell growth, migration, invasion, metastasis, malignant cell transformation, and/or to modulate oncogenic signaling, wherein introducing RhoB directly, or indirectly via a nucleic acid sequence encoding RhoB, into a malignantly transformed cell or a cancerous cell decreases phosphorylation of Erk and Akt proteins inhibiting the PI3-kinase/Akt cell survival pathway and promoting apoptotic cell death. In one aspect, the compositions and methods of the present invention are used to inhibit the malignant transformation of cells by the oncogenes H-Ras, N-Ras, K-Ras, EGFR, or ErbB2, or to …

Adolescent Mothers: Youth In Need Of Developmentally Appropriate Services, Patricia Arlyne Zimmerman Nov 2006

Adolescent Mothers: Youth In Need Of Developmentally Appropriate Services, Patricia Arlyne Zimmerman

Dissertations and Theses

This research examines the childhood abuse and maltreatment experiences of adolescent mothers (age 14 to 17) to investigate if these experiences have hindered their socioemotional development and consequently, their parenting behaviors and attitudes. Data were gathered using four standardized self-report instruments: the Child Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC), the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory-Youth Version (EQi-YV), and the Adult Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2). Two additional questionnaires were developed to gather demographic and social service information to add to the knowledge base of the field, and to examine what (if any) developmentally focused services young mothers may …

Insights Into Transcription Enhancer Factor 1 (Tef-1) Activity From The Solution Structure Of The Tea Domain, Asokan Anbanandam, Diana C Albarado, Catherine T Nguyen, Georg Halder, Xiaolian Gao, Sudha Veeraraghavan Nov 2006

Insights Into Transcription Enhancer Factor 1 (Tef-1) Activity From The Solution Structure Of The Tea Domain, Asokan Anbanandam, Diana C Albarado, Catherine T Nguyen, Georg Halder, Xiaolian Gao, Sudha Veeraraghavan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Transcription enhancer factor 1 is essential for cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle development and uses its N-terminal TEA domain (TEAD) to bind M-CAT elements. Here, we present the first structure of TEAD and show that it is a three-helix bundle with a homeodomain fold. Structural data reveal how TEAD binds DNA. Using structure-function correlations, we find that the L1 loop is essential for cooperative loading of TEAD molecules on to tandemly duplicated M-CAT sites. Furthermore, using a microarray chip-based assay, we establish that known binding sites of the full-length protein are only a subset of DNA elements recognized by TEAD. …

Radioactive Contamination At Dayton Canyon From The Santa Susana Filed Laboratory, Committee To Bridge The Gap, Daniel Hirsch Nov 2006

Radioactive Contamination At Dayton Canyon From The Santa Susana Filed Laboratory, Committee To Bridge The Gap, Daniel Hirsch

Committee to Bridge the Gap

"Radioactive Contamination at Dayton Canyon from the Santa Susana Filed Laboratory" was a report that was "deeply flawed" as the result of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) "misrepresenting the underlying data", as well as "poor protection levels and an a priori assumption that there can't be contamination coming from Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL). It should be rejected."

Correspondence and context for this failed study, and the ways the Committee to Bridge the Gap and its researchers were led astray by aforementioned parties, is documented in detail here.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 6 of …
