Formal description of plant phenotypes and standardized annotation of gene expression and protein localization data require uniform terminology that accurately describes plant anatomy and morphology. This facilitates cross species comparative studies and quantitative comparison of phenotypes and expression patterns. A major drawback is variable terminology that is used to describe plant anatomy and morphology in publications and genomic databases for different species. The same terms are sometimes applied to different plant structures in different taxonomic groups. Conversely, similar structures are named by their species-specific terms. To address this problem, we created the Plant Structure Ontology (PSO), the first generic ontological …

Analysis Of Doe Environmental Management. Economic And Environmental Issues In New Mexico, Nuclear Watch Of New Mexico

Nuclear Watch of New Mexico

In April 2003, Nuclear Watch of New Mexico (NukeWatch) was funded by the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment (MTA) Fund to conduct “Analyses of Department of Energy Environmental Management: Economic and Environmental Issues in New Mexico.”

New Mexico is home to two of the nation’s three nuclear weapons labs, the Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, with annual budgets of more than $2 billion each. New Mexico also hosts the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, the world’s only deep geological disposal site for radioactive transuranic wastes, which are primarily plutonium contaminated wastes resulting from nuclear weap- ons research and production. The …

The Power Of Collaboration With Patient Safety Programs, Kathryn Rapala, Karlene Kerfoot, Patricia Ebright, Suzanne Rogers Dec 2006

The Power Of Collaboration With Patient Safety Programs, Kathryn Rapala, Karlene Kerfoot, Patricia Ebright, Suzanne Rogers

RCHE Publications

Patient safety is a relatively new field, with many options and few effectively proven approaches. One factor is clear: optimal patient safety outcomes cannot be achieved in isolation. Although it is well recognized that multidisciplinary collaboration in the healthcare setting is necessry to effect patient safety, collaboration with resources external to healthcare- academia and industry in particular - will not only aid but also quicken the patient safety efforts.

Indian Boarding Schools In Comparative Perspective: The Removal Of Indigenous Children In The United States And Australia, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs Dec 2006

Indian Boarding Schools In Comparative Perspective: The Removal Of Indigenous Children In The United States And Australia, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

This essay compares the forced removal of American Indian and Aboriginal children in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, arguing that governments intentionally removed indigenous children to institutions as acts of colonial control, not assimilation. Since colonial governments in the United States and Australia did not value traditional cultures of American Indians and Aborigines, they sought to destroy them. The essay argues that non-Natives purposely removed indigenous children to make them "useful" to non-Natives. As a result, indigenous children's institutions taught a curriculum designed to be of benefit to employers who could exploit Native labor. Every state in Australia had a …

Uniform Discretizations: A New Approach For The Quantization Of Totally Constrained Systems, Miguel Campiglia, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Dec 2006

Uniform Discretizations: A New Approach For The Quantization Of Totally Constrained Systems, Miguel Campiglia, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We discuss in detail the uniform discretization approach to the quantization of totally constrained theories. This approach allows to construct the continuum theory of interest as a well defined, controlled, limit of well behaved discrete theories. We work out several finite dimensional examples that exhibit behaviors expected to be of importance in the quantization of gravity. We also work out the case of BF theory. At the time of quantization, one can take two points of view. The technique can be used to define, upon taking the continuum limit, the space of physical states of the continuum constrained theory of …

Knowledge, Access, And Utilization Of Health Care Resources By Minorities In Rural Areas, Cassandra Crockett Dec 2006

Knowledge, Access, And Utilization Of Health Care Resources By Minorities In Rural Areas, Cassandra Crockett

All Theses

This research seeks to understand how knowledge, access, and utilization of health care resources are obtained by residents in one South Carolina upstate county. In particular, whites and minorities living in rural parts of Anderson County are studied in an effort to address issues of barriers that obstruct the ability to obtain knowledge, access, and utilization of health care resources. A primary objective of this research is to determine whether or not knowledge of health care resources is a result of previously using them. In other words, are individuals knowledgeable about available health care resources before they become ill? It …

The Complexity Of Computing The Size Of An Interval, Lane A. Hemaspaandra, Christopher M. Homan, Sven Kosub, Klaus W. Wagner Dec 2006

The Complexity Of Computing The Size Of An Interval, Lane A. Hemaspaandra, Christopher M. Homan, Sven Kosub, Klaus W. Wagner

Articles

Given a p-order A over a universe of strings (i.e., a transitive, reflexive, antisymmetric relation such that if (x, y) ∈ A then |x| is polynomially bounded by |y|), an interval size function of A returns, for each string x in the universe, the number of strings in the interval between strings b(x) and t(x) (with respect to A), where b(x) and t(x) are functions that are polynomial-time computable in the length of x. By choosing sets of interval size functions based on feasibility requirements for their underlying p-orders, we obtain new characterizations of complexity classes. We prove that the …

Lehmann Family Of Roc Curves, Mithat Gonen, Glenn Heller Dec 2006

Lehmann Family Of Roc Curves, Mithat Gonen, Glenn Heller

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are useful in evaluating the ability of a continuous marker in discriminating between the two states of a binary outcome such as diseased/not diseased. The most popular parametric model for an ROC curve is the binormal model which assumes that the marker is normally distributed conditional on the outcome. Here we present an alternative to the binormal model based on the Lehmann family, also known as the proportional hazards specification. The resulting ROC curve and its functionals (such as the area under the curve) have simple analytic forms. We derive closed-form expressions for the asymptotic …

Interacting With Local And Remote Data Respositories Using The Stashr Package, Sandrah P. Eckel, Roger Peng Dec 2006

Interacting With Local And Remote Data Respositories Using The Stashr Package, Sandrah P. Eckel, Roger Peng

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The stashR package (a Set of Tools for Administering SHared Repositories) for R implements a simple key-value style database where character string keys are associated with data values. The key-value databases can be either stored locally on the user's computer or accessed remotely via the Internet. Methods specific to the stashR package allow users to share data repositories or access previously created remote data repositories. In particular, methods are available for the S4 classes localDB and remoteDB to insert, retrieve, or delete data from the database as well as to synchronize local copies of the data to the remote version …

Review Essay: Excuse Theory Through A Liberal Lens, Richard C. Boldt Dec 2006

Review Essay: Excuse Theory Through A Liberal Lens, Richard C. Boldt

Faculty Scholarship

This essay reviews Excusing Crime, by Jeremy Horder, Reader in Criminal Law and Tutor in Law at Worcester College, Oxford. It describes Horder’s project, which is to build a complex taxonomy of criminal law excuse practices and to use that account of “why things are as they are” to argue, on the basis of his version of liberal theory, against “the restricted range” of excuses in the UK and elsewhere. By virtue of his appreciation that some, but not all, excuses contain justificatory elements, and given his insistence that pure claims of non-responsibility are not excuses, Horder has defined a …
