A Comparison Of Two Teaching Methodologies In A Middle School Algebra Classroom, Kristina L. Tucky Dec 2006

A Comparison Of Two Teaching Methodologies In A Middle School Algebra Classroom, Kristina L. Tucky

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study was an attempt to determine if a change in teaching methodology would have a positive effect on the outcome, as measured by a chapter test, of an algebra class. The research involved a pretest-posttest control group design of two sections of an eighth grade algebra class. The control group received the standard instructional practice, known as the "direct method", while the treatment group received the same "direct method" and additional "constructive" methodology in the form of manipulatives and group reading of the subject matter. No statistical difference was found between the means of the two classes on the …

Spatial Variation In The Chemical Composition Of Natal Otholiths From A Reef Fish In The Galápagos Islands, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Robert R. Warner Dec 2006

Spatial Variation In The Chemical Composition Of Natal Otholiths From A Reef Fish In The Galápagos Islands, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Robert R. Warner

Biological Sciences

Over the past decade, researchers have used variation in the chemical composition of fish otoliths (earstones) to address a number of ecological questions, such as stock assessment and assessing rates of movement of individuals among habitats or life-history stages. However, these methods have yet to be applied successfully to the study of larval connectivity, a major unanswered question in marine ecology. Accomplishing this task requires a reference collection of pre-pelagic natal otoliths and accurate measurement of the chemical signatures of otoliths cores of recruits. We analyzed the chemical composition of natal otoliths from near-term benthic eggs of a damselfish (Stegastes …

Doubling Measures, Monotonicity, And Quasiconformality, Leonid V. Kovalev, Diego Maldonado, Jang-Mei Wu Dec 2006

Doubling Measures, Monotonicity, And Quasiconformality, Leonid V. Kovalev, Diego Maldonado, Jang-Mei Wu

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We construct quasiconformal mappings in Euclidean spaces by integration of a discontinuous kernel against doubling measures with suitable decay. The differentials of mappings that arise in this way satisfy an isotropic form of the doubling condition. We prove that this isotropic doubling condition is satisfied by the distance functions of certain fractal sets. Finally, we construct an isotropic doubling measure that is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Discovery Of Extensive Optical Emission Associated With The X-Ray Bright, Radio Faint Galactic Snr G156.2+5.7, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen Dec 2006

Discovery Of Extensive Optical Emission Associated With The X-Ray Bright, Radio Faint Galactic Snr G156.2+5.7, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present wide‐field Hα images of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G156.2+5.7 which reveal the presence of considerable faint Hα line emission coincident with the remnant's X‐ray emission. We also present low‐resolution optical spectra for a few representative emission regions. The outermost Hα emission consists largely of long and thin (unresolved), smoothly curved filaments of Balmer‐dominated emission presumably associated with the remnant's forward shock front. Patches of brighter Hα emission along the western, south‐central, and north‐eastern regions appear to be radiative shocked interstellar medium filaments like those commonly seen in SNRs, with relatively strong [O i]λλ6300, 6364 and [S ii]λλ6716, …

A search has been made for neutrinos from the hep reaction in the Sun and from the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) using data collected during the first operational phase of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, with an exposure of 0.65 ktons yr. For the hep neutrino search, two events are observed in the effective electron energy range of 14.3 MeV < Teff < 20 MeV, where 3.1 background events are expected. After accounting for neutrino oscillations, an upper limit of 2.3 × 104 cm-2 s-1 at the 90% confidence level is inferred on the integral total flux of hep neutrinos. For DSNB neutrinos, no events are observed in the effective electron energy range of 21 MeV < Teff < 35 MeV, and, consequently, an upper limit on the νe component of the DSNB flux in the neutrino energy range of 22.9 MeV < Eν < 36.9 MeVof 70 cm-2 s-1 is inferred at the 90% confidence level. This is an improvement by a factor of 6.5 on the previous best upper limit on the hep neutrino flux and by 2 orders of magnitude on the previous upper limit on the νe component of the DSNB flux. © 2006. The Health And Nutrition Of Migrant Farm Workers In South Carolina, Abel Caballero Dec 2006

The Health And Nutrition Of Migrant Farm Workers In South Carolina, Abel Caballero

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Migrant farm workers--a high percentage of which are Hispanic--are an extremely disadvantaged population that experiences several barriers, including language, nutrition, transportation, and access to health services. This population also suffers from numerous diseases (obesity, diabetes, and heart disease) and experiences various hazards associated with risky work, such as pesticide exposure. This study included data collection on basic health and nutrition barriers to identify areas where programs and policies can be modified to better serve migrant farm workers. In addition, data was examined to determine the effect of all-inclusive educational intervention on nutrition, dental, fitness, and food safety issues by …

The Piezoresistive Effect In Microflexures, Gary K. Johns Dec 2006

The Piezoresistive Effect In Microflexures, Gary K. Johns

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to present a new model for predicting the piezoresistive effect in microflexures experiencing bending stresses. A linear model describing piezoresistivity exists for members in pure tension and compression. Extensions of this model to more complex loading conditions do not match experimental results. An accurate model of piezoresistivity in complex loading conditions would expand the design possibilities of piezoresistive devices. A new model to predict piezoresistive effects in tension, compression, and more complex loading conditions is proposed. The focus of this research is to verify a unidirectional form of this proposed model for microflexures in …

Wavefront Curvature Sensing From Image Projections, Jonathan C. Buffington Dec 2006

Wavefront Curvature Sensing From Image Projections, Jonathan C. Buffington

Theses and Dissertations

This research outlines the development and simulation of a signal processing approach to real time wavefront curvature sensing in adaptive optics. The signal processing approach combines vectorized Charge Coupled Device (CCD) read out with a wavefront modal estimation technique. The wavefront sensing algorithm analyzes vector projections of image intensity data to provide an estimate of the wavefront phase as a combination of several low order Zernike polynomial modes. This wavefront sensor design expands on an existing idea for vector based tilt sensing by providing the ability to compensate for additional modes. Under the proposed wavefront sensing approach, the physical wavefront …

Neutral Citation, Court Web Sites, And Access To Case Law, Peter W. Martin Dec 2006

Neutral Citation, Court Web Sites, And Access To Case Law, Peter W. Martin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In 1994 the Wisconsin Bar and Judicial Council together urged the Wisconsin Supreme Court to take two dramatic steps with the combined aim of improving access to state case law: 1) adopt a new system of neutral citation and 2) establish a digital archive of decisions directly available to all publishers and the public. The recommendations set off a storm, and the Wisconsin court deferred decision on the package. In the years since those events, the background conditions have shifted dramatically. Neutral citation has been endorsed by the AALL and ABA and formally adopted in over a dozen states, including …

Harmonizing Preferential Rules Of Origin In The Wto System, John J. Barceló Iii Dec 2006

Harmonizing Preferential Rules Of Origin In The Wto System, John J. Barceló Iii

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Preferential arrangements (bilateral and multilateral free trade areas and GSP systems (preferences for developing countries)) are emerging everywhere in the world trading system and are causing concern because they discriminate against non-members and add complexity, distortions and inconsistency to the global system. Rules of origin (ROOs) linked to these arrangements are a significant part of the problem. More and more they have become the source in their own right of distortions in trade patterns, complexity, non-transparency and inconsistency. This essay argues that WTO members should authorize negotiations seeking to harmonize preferential ROOs (rules of origin linked to preferential arrangements) around …

The Influence Of Age On Knowledge And Medication Usage By Persons Attending Rural North Florida Clinics Dec 2006

The Influence Of Age On Knowledge And Medication Usage By Persons Attending Rural North Florida Clinics

Florida Public Health Review

Medication therapy is an important component of the comprehensive treatment plan designed to maintain or improve health. If patients do not take prescribed medications correctly or are non-adherent, less successful therapy occurs. Reasons given for noncompliance include cost, misunderstanding the therapy, side effects, forgetfulness, or a belief that the medication is not effective or necessary. This study had two goals, the first was to evaluate medication use while simultaneously assessing knowledge, compliance, tolerance, and perceived efficacy. Drug-related problems, if any, were also identified. The second goal was to develop methods to improve patient outcomes based upon identified problems. For eight …

High Sensitivity Rna Pseudoknot Prediction, Xiaolu Huang, Hesham Ali Dec 2006

High Sensitivity Rna Pseudoknot Prediction, Xiaolu Huang, Hesham Ali

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Most ab initio pseudoknot predicting methods provide very few folding scenarios for a given RNA sequence and have low sensitivities. RNA researchers, in many cases, would rather sacrifice the specificity for a much higher sensitivity for pseudoknot detection. In this study, we introduce the Pseudoknot Local Motif Model and Dynamic Partner Sequence Stacking (PLMM_DPSS) algorithm which predicts all PLM model pseudoknots within an RNA sequence in a neighboring-region-interferencefree fashion. The PLM model is derived from the existing Pseudobase entries. The innovative DPSS approach calculates the optimally lowest stacking energy between two partner sequences. Combined with the Mfold, PLMM_DPSS can also …

The Incorporation Of Atmospheric Variability Into Dirsig, Brian Dobbs Dec 2006

The Incorporation Of Atmospheric Variability Into Dirsig, Brian Dobbs

Theses

The goal of this research can be divided into two main areas. The first is to improve the existing manner in which DIRSIG samples and references the atmosphere. The second is to give DIRSIG the ability to incorporate atmospheric inhomogeneities, as well as the ability to accurately model them. DIRSIG has limitations in how it currently samples the atmosphere. From a geometric standpoint, it does not fully sample the energy which is scattered by the atmosphere towards the sensor (upwelled radiance). There are also other geometric issues which lead to inaccurate modeling results. One significant inaccuracy is the fact that …

Volatility Spillovers Between Stock Prices And Exchange Rates: Empiral Evidence From Six Apec Economies, Lucia Morales, Mary O'Donnell Dec 2006

Volatility Spillovers Between Stock Prices And Exchange Rates: Empiral Evidence From Six Apec Economies, Lucia Morales, Mary O'Donnell

Conference papers

This paper set out to examine the volatility linkages between stock returns and exchange rates in a number of East Asian markets. Overall, our main results indicate that since the Asian financial crises, there exists significant scope for investors and portfolio managers to diversify their assets between stocks and currencies in these markets. In particular, the lack of volatility spillovers between stock markets and exchange rates, and between exchange rates and stock markets in all countries, except Taiwan in the post crises period indicates that there is scope for investors to diversify their investments and to benefit from potential gains …
