Understanding basic neuronal mechanisms hold the hope for future treatment of brain disease. The 1st international conference on synapse, memory, drug addiction and pain was held in beautiful downtown Toronto, Canada on August 21-23, 2006. Unlike other traditional conferences, this new meeting focused on three major aims: (1) to promote new and cutting edge research in neuroscience; (2) to encourage international information exchange and scientific collaborations; and (3) to provide a platform for active scientists to discuss new findings. Up to 64 investigators presented their recent discoveries, from basic synaptic mechanisms to genes related to human brain disease. This meeting …
Be Headsmart® Seniors! -- The Effectiveness Of A Psychoeducational Fall And Consequential Injury Prevention Program
Florida Public Health Review
This study tested the utility of the Be HeadSmart® Seniors! fall prevention intervention, HeadSmartz, a Cranium Challenge, in the promotion of safety improvement behavior change. It employed a quasi-experimental two-group design. Of the 106 individuals included in this study, 64 received the intervention and 42 only received the safety brochure. The Cranium Challenge is an interactive, visual, and auditory program based upon the popular board game CraniumTM. This game stimulated various parts of the participant’s brain verbally, through trivia questions and word games, visually, or by humming, whistling, or playing charades. The presentation included trivia questions created in a PowerPoint …

Modern Sport
In the field of sports, there are many phenomena that can be recognized or observed, and thus tested and measured to obtain objective results characterized by accuracy and reliability, provided they are used based on scientific principles. Tests and measurements are not merely tools to assess specific traits or levels, but rather to understand the relationships and correlations among these elements and traits. Therefore, they serve as evaluative tools for the physical, skillful, and psychological aspects of our athletes and teams by identifying correct treatments and solutions to avoid many shortcomings that coaches may encounter during training or when designing …
Scaling Tests Of The Cross Section For Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, C. Muñoz Camacho, Timothy Holmstrom, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration
Scaling Tests Of The Cross Section For Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, C. Muñoz Camacho, Timothy Holmstrom, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
We present the first measurements of the e⃗p→epγ cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region. The Q2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3 GeV2) of the helicity-dependent cross section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q2. The helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q2=2.3 GeV2. We present the first model-independent measurement of linear combinations of GPDs and GPD integrals up to the twist-3 approximation.

A New View Of Ridge Segmentation And Near-Axis Volcanism At The East Pacific Rise, 8˚–12˚N, From Em300 Multibeam Bathymetry, Scott M. White, Rachel M. Haymon, S M. Carbotte
Faculty Publications
New, high-resolution bathymetry for the East Pacific Rise between 8˚N and 12˚N was collected over a6 km wide swath centered on the ridge axis using the 30 kHz Simrad EM300 multibeam system. Thecoverage area corresponds latitudinally to the designated Ridge2000 Integrated Studies Site (ISS) for fastspreading ridges. The EM300 data, gridded at 30 m latitude by 50 m longitude, represent a greater than 4Ximprovement in horizontal resolution over previously available multibeam data and a 2X improvement indepth resolution. The new bathymetry was used to update the locations and hierarchy of ridge offsets forthis area. Among the many applications for this …

An Echocardiographic Study Of Valvular Heart Disease Associated With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Safa Ez-Aldeen Al-Mukhtar
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Valvular heart disease is the most important cardiacmanifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We performed a study to determine the relation of valvular disease to other clinical features of lupus, the type and the incidence of valvular heart disease in SLE patients. METHODS: We performed transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and rheumatologic evaluations in 56 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The echocardiographic findings were compared with those in 40 healthy volunteers. RESULT: Abnormal valvular Echocardiographic findings were multiple valvular abnormalities found in 21 patients (37.5%), were distributed in three groups according of valvular involvement: (Group1) included patients with anatomical and …

CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old lady who presented with a soft tissue mass in the anterior aspect of the left upper arm which was enlarging over the last three years . The mass was painless and the patient was a febrile, without weight loss and denied any history of trauma. Physical examination revealed a non-tender, soft , fluctuant , nonpulsatile mass of about 4 , 3 , 3 cm in dimensions in the biceps brachii muscle and it was mobile with contraction of the muscle . No erythema, ecchymosis, warmth or lymphadenopathy was determined. Ultrasound of the local area revealed a …

Design Of Concrete Railing Reinforced With Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars, Fabio Matta, Antonio Nanni
Design Of Concrete Railing Reinforced With Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars, Fabio Matta, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement is a practical alternative to conventional steel rebars in concrete structures subjected to aggressive environments. the solution is attractive for bridge deck and rail applications, as it eliminates corrosion of the steel reinforcement, which is the major instrument of degradation. Due to the peculiar physical and mechanical characteristics of advanced composite materials, the design philosophy of FRP reinforced concrete (RC) structures differs from that of traditional RC. This paper introduces a systematic approach adopted for the structural and functional design of an open-post bridge railing reinforced with Glass FRP bars (GFRP) as …

Superfluid Transition In A Rotating Fermi Gas With Resonant Interactions, Martin Y. Veillette, Daniel E. Sheehy, Leo Radzihovsky, Victor Gurarie

We study a rotating atomic Fermi gas near a narrow s-wave Feshbach resonance in a uniaxial trap with frequencies Ω⊥, Ωz. We predict the upper-critical angular velocity, ωc2(δ,T), as a function of temperature T and detuning δ across the BEC-BCS crossover. The suppression of superfluidity at ωc2 is distinct in the BCS and BEC regimes, with the former controlled by depairing and the latter by the dilution of bosonic molecules. At low T and Ωz 〉 Ω⊥, in the BCS and crossover regimes of 0 δ δc, ωc2 is implicitly given by ωc22+Ω2 ≈ 2Δ Ω/F, vanishing as ωc2∼Ω (1-δ/δc)1/2 …
