Teaching Courses Online: A Review Of The Research, Mary K. Tallent-Runnels, Julie A. Thomas, William Y. Lan, Sandi Cooper, Terence C. Ahern, Shana M. Shaw, Xiaoming Liu
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This literature review summarizes research on online teaching and learning. It is organized into four topics: course environment, learners’ outcomes, learners’ characteristics, and institutional and administrative factors. The authors found little consistency of terminology, discovered some conclusive guidelines, and identified developing lines of inquiry. The conclusions overall suggest that most of the studies reviewed were descriptive and exploratory, that most online students are nontraditional and Anglo American, and that few universities have written policies, guidelines, or technical support for faculty members or students. Asynchronous communication seemed to facilitate in-depth communication (but not more than in traditional classes), students liked to …

Realizing The Open-Closed Principle, Chong-Wei Xu, Jose Hughes
Realizing The Open-Closed Principle, Chong-Wei Xu, Jose Hughes
Faculty Articles
The first principle in developing large software systems is the open-closed principle (OCP). This principle seems asking for two conflict goals. How to realize the principle in the real software practice? What are the enabling technologies that can be used to implement the principle? This paper uses a case study to demonstrate the importance of the principle, the design methodology for realizing the principle, and its enabling technologies.
Thermal Stress On Intertidal Limpets: Long-Term Hindcasts And Lethal Limits, Mark Denny, Luke Miller, Christopher Harley
Thermal Stress On Intertidal Limpets: Long-Term Hindcasts And Lethal Limits, Mark Denny, Luke Miller, Christopher Harley
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
When coupled with long-term meteorological records, a heat-budget model for the limpet, Lottia gigantea, provides a wealth of information regarding environmental and topographic controls of body temperature in this ecologically important species. (1) The maximum body temperature predicted for any site (37.5°C) is insufficient to kill all limpets, suggesting that acute thermal stress does not set an absolute upper limit to the elevation of L. gigantea on the shore. Therefore, the upper limit must be set by behavioral responses, sublethal effects or ecological interactions. (2) Temperatures sufficient to kill limpets are reached at only a small fraction of substratum orientations …

Wrongful Discharge: The Use Of Federal Law As A Source Of Public Policy, Nancy M. Modesitt
Wrongful Discharge: The Use Of Federal Law As A Source Of Public Policy, Nancy M. Modesitt
All Faculty Scholarship
Wrongful discharge in violation of public policy circumscribes the employment at-will doctrine by prohibiting employers from firing employees who engage in conduct that is deemed to be protected by state or federal public policy. While much has been written about the pros and cons of such wrongful discharge claims, to date no scholarship has focused on the problems that arise when the source of public policy is a federal rather than state statute. This article analyzes the historical and current approaches to the use of federal statutes as a source of public policy to protect employees against discharge, concluding that …
Synthesis Of Aspernigrin A, Erica Joerger
Synthesis Of Aspernigrin A, Erica Joerger
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Aspernigrin A is a compound correlated with inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in the colon. A five-step synthesis was designed for aspernigrin A, projected to yield four intermediates and the final product. The intermediates were analyzed by high field 1HNMR and FT-IR spectroscopy before proceeding to the next step. A model pyridone ring system was successfully prepared from a commercially available pyrone precursor in two steps. These results provide a proof of concept that the synthetic scheme should successfully yield the natural product.

Bifurcation And Singularity Analysis Of A Molecular Network For The Induction Of Long-Term Memory, Hao Song, Paul Smolen, Evyatar Av-Ron, Douglas A. Baxter, John H H. Byrne
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Withdrawal reflexes of the mollusk Aplysia exhibit sensitization, a simple form of long-term memory (LTM). Sensitization is due, in part, to long-term facilitation (LTF) of sensorimotor neuron synapses. LTF is induced by the modulatory actions of serotonin (5-HT). Pettigrew et al. developed a computational model of the nonlinear intracellular signaling and gene network that underlies the induction of 5-HT-induced LTF. The model simulated empirical observations that repeated applications of 5-HT induce persistent activation of protein kinase A (PKA) and that this persistent activation requires a suprathreshold exposure of 5-HT. This study extends the analysis of the Pettigrew model by applying …

Teleconference Training Within Commercial Customer Service At Us Bank, Christy Snyder
Teleconference Training Within Commercial Customer Service At Us Bank, Christy Snyder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Research suggests that effective employee training methods are of key importance in the service industry today. The service industry uses customer service as a means of differentiating its product (Davis, 2005; Farrell, 2005; Feiertag, 2005; Furunes, 2005; Higley, 2004a; Jenkins, 1984; Simons, 2005; Walsh, 2004). “Friendliness and a willingness to serve others are the tools of the hotel trade, and training is the sharpener that refines the tools into hospitality machines” (Higley, 2004b). Training is integral in creating a positive environment for customers. If organizations want to ensure customers have this type of environment, employees must have both service and …

An Implicit Level Set Model For Firespread, Pallop Huabsomboon
An Implicit Level Set Model For Firespread, Pallop Huabsomboon
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The level set method is a mathematical and computational, technique for tracking a moving interface over time. It can naturally handle topological changes such as merging or breaking interfaces. Intrinsic geometric properties of the interface, such as curvature and normal direction, are easily determined from the level set function &phis;. There are many applications of the level set method, including kinetic crystal growth, epitaxial growth of thin films, image restoration, vortex dominated flows, and so forth. Most applications described in the growing literature on the applications of level sets advance the level set equation with explicit time integration. Hence, small …
Modulation Of Tgfβ-Induced Pai -1 Expression By Changes In Actin Polymerization In Human Mesangial Cells, Keyur Patel
Modulation Of Tgfβ-Induced Pai -1 Expression By Changes In Actin Polymerization In Human Mesangial Cells, Keyur Patel
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Chronic renal diseases show increased deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the glomerulus (glomerulosclerosis). Glomerulosclerosis is associated with activation of normally quiescent glomerular mesangial cells into myofibroblast-like cells. The overall objective of this study is to delineate cellular mechanism/s of myofibroblast-differentiation in disease states. In cultured mesangial cells certain characteristics of myofibroblast differentiation (α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and hypertrophy) are associated with an increase in polymeric actin microfilaments (stress fibers). It is likely that other genes are also regulated in an actin cytoskeleton-dependent manner during myofibroblast differentiation. In these studies, we therefore examined the hypothesis that changes in the actin …

Comparison Of Og1rf And An Isogenic Fsrb Deletion Mutant By Transcriptional Analysis: The Fsr System Of Enterococcus Faecalis Is More Than The Activator Of Gelatinase And Serine Protease, Agathe Bourgogne, Susan G Hilsenbeck, Gary M Dunny, Barbara E Murray
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The FsrABC system of Enterococcus faecalis controls the expression of gelatinase and a serine protease via a quorum-sensing mechanism, and recent studies suggest that the Fsr system may also regulate other genes important for virulence. To investigate the possibility that Fsr influences the expression of additional genes, we used transcriptional profiling, with microarrays based on the E. faecalis strain V583 sequence, to compare the E. faecalis strain OG1RF with its isogenic mutant, TX5266, an fsrB deletion mutant. We found that the presence of an intact fsrB influences expression of numerous genes throughout the growth phases tested, namely, late log to …

Information Visualization Methods And Techniques Using Web Services, Kevin Dupigny
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Data, even in small amounts, can be difficult to interpret quickly and efficiently. Data domains are continually expanding and making this data available and usable in collaborative data environment is a challenge that was not addressed by legacy systems. Such a framework would make the existence of a global information sharing system feasible. Visualizing this complex dataset presents a complex task for current static interface solutions. A flexible layered service oriented model is presented in this work to approach this challenge. The visual scope of human perception is largely untapped by today's data visualization applications. Human mental processes are adept …
Personal Responsibility Versus Government Responsibility Welfare Attitudes Post-1996, Emily C. Ing
Personal Responsibility Versus Government Responsibility Welfare Attitudes Post-1996, Emily C. Ing
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The welfare system in the United States underwent a major overhaul in 1996, transforming Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) to Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). Since then, there has been little research conducted on attitudes toward welfare. This is still a topic worth investigating, as poverty and homelessness remain a problem in the United States.
This thesis hypothesized that attitudes about welfare would vary according to an individual's commitment to individualism, a hegemonic value in the United States. This thesis also hypothesized that welfare attitudes would vary according to an individual's education, gender, marital status, race, and …

Strategy For Product Reusability Based On Technical And Economic Model, Srikanth Uppuluri
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Reusing old components is considered the most profitable End-of-Life strategy in the modern day scenario of sustainable manufacturing. Though there is increasing pressure on the product designers worldwide to make reuse possible, the functionality of the products and the economic feasibility have been the main considerations for manufacturers in evaluating the reuse strategy. The quality level of the used product and mainly the economic aspect of disassembling the product have been the main uncertainties confronting the industries to move towards the product recovery strategies like reuse and disassembly. The profitability factor in designing and implementing the technology for disassembly of …

No Buts! - Researching Children's Consumption, An Exploration Of Conversation And Discourse Analytic Techniques, Olivia Freeman
No Buts! - Researching Children's Consumption, An Exploration Of Conversation And Discourse Analytic Techniques, Olivia Freeman
Conference papers
Contemporary discussion of social research with children revolves around three trends (i) an emphasis on researching children’s ‘experiences’ rather than their ‘perspectives’, (ii) an emphasis on researching ‘with’ children rather than ‘on’ children or ‘for’ children and (iii) a conceptualisation of children as ‘social beings’ not ‘social becomings’. This paper poses questions about how qualitative data is analysed and posits a two-pronged CA/DA (conversation analysis/ discourse analysis) approach as a potential means to enhance richness in qualitative research in the area of children’s consumption phenomena. Drawing on a number of illustrations from an ongoing research project this paper seeks to …
Sustainable Production: Definition, Comparison, And Application, Scott Swisher '08
Sustainable Production: Definition, Comparison, And Application, Scott Swisher '08
The Park Place Economist
In what follows, I analyze the various definitions of sustainability that have been established in a diverse set of disciplines – the economics definitions of weak, strong, and environmental sustainability, the ecological definition, and the authoritative definitions enumerated in the Brundtland Report and Agenda 21 – and I argue that strong sustainability is the superior definition of sustainability in terms of production. Applying this definition to industrial firms via policies that harmonize producer actions with sustainable productive activity will require a fundamental readjustment of both producer and consumer behavior.
Book Review: International Law's American Roots, Scott Horton
Book Review: International Law's American Roots, Scott Horton
Connecticut Journal of International Law
In the last five years, the bookshelf has begun to fill with works on international law which take a sharply political tone, and which often seem to reflect a fairly crass reverse-engineering of history and precedent to justify a contemporary political agenda. Against this background, it is a pure delight to come across a work of traditional scholarship which makes a significant contribution to the subject matter, is reasonably oblivious to current partisan casuistry and is certain to endure precisely for that reason. Mark Janis' The American Tradition of International Law is a treasure trove with illuminating discoveries at every …
Fatal In Theory And Strict In Fact: An Empirical Analysis Of Strict Scrutiny In The Federal Courts, Adam Winkler
Fatal In Theory And Strict In Fact: An Empirical Analysis Of Strict Scrutiny In The Federal Courts, Adam Winkler
Vanderbilt Law Review
A popular myth in American constitutional law is that the "strict scrutiny" standard of review applied to enforce rights such as free speech and equal protection is 'strict' in theory and fatal in fact."' This phrase, coined by the late legal scholar Gerald Gunther in 1972, has been called "one of the most famous epithets in American constitutional law"' and has effectively defined the strict scrutiny standard in the minds of lawyers for two generations. Born of Gunther's observation, supported by the iconic decisions of the Warren Court, and reinforced in constitutional law teaching and scholarship, the myth teaches that …
