Hormesis In Plants: Implications For Weed Management And Crop Production, Luka Milosevic May 2026

Hormesis In Plants: Implications For Weed Management And Crop Production, Luka Milosevic

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Hormesis is a biphasic toxicological phenomenon in which low doses of a stressor stimulate biological performance of an organism, while higher doses inhibit it. In plants, hormesis has been documented following exposure to various environmental stressors, including herbicides, pollutants, and thermal stress. However, the physiological basis of hormesis and its implications for crop production and weed management remain poorly understood. Thus, the objective of this dissertation was to investigate hormetic responses in plants and evaluate their agronomic significance for crops and weeds using representative model species. A combination of field and controlled-environment experiments was conducted to quantify plant responses to …

The Age-Dependent Resident Myonuclear Multi-Omic Response To An Acute Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophic Stimulus In Mice, Pieter J. Koopmans, Ronald G. Jones, Ana Regina Cabrera, Francielly Morena, Nicholas P. Greene, John J. Mccarthy, Ahmed Ismaeel, Yuan Wen, Kevin A. Murach

Physiology Faculty Publications

A detailed analysis of how muscle fiber nuclei (myonuclei) respond to a hypertrophic stimulus could provide a critical step toward understanding compromised skeletal muscle plasticity with age. We used recombination-independent doxycycline-inducible myonucleus-specific fluorescent labelling, tissue RNA-sequencing, myonuclear DNA methylation analysis, multi-omic integration, and single myonucleus RNA-sequencing (smnRNA-seq) to define the molecular characteristics of adult (6–8 month) and aged (24 month) murine skeletal muscle after acute mechanical overload (MOV). In adult and aged MOV muscles, we found that: 1) similarities in the transcriptional response to loading—specifically in metabolism genes – were partly explained by a post-transcriptional microRNA-mediated mechanism that we corroborated …

They’Ve Been Waiting For Me A Long Time, Anna Minzer May 2026

They’Ve Been Waiting For Me A Long Time, Anna Minzer

Theses

They’ve Been Waiting for Me a Long Time is a photo-based project saturated in process, layers, and iterations. Using collage as a connective approach, They’ve Been Waiting for Me a Long Time interrogates the boundaries of the domestic and wild, the aestheticized and the abject and the trappings of gender in tension with queer values.      As my visual art encapsulates a variety of approaches, my sources and inspirations manifest from a variety of media—installation, literature, philosophy, photography, and wallpaper. With an assortment of influences, I demonstrate a proclivity towards the liminal. A prime purpose of They’ve Been Waiting for Me …

Red Lines, Green Blooms: Assessing The Effects Of Historical Environmental Disparity On Algal Communities In The Twin Cities, Mn, Georgia C. Akins May 2026

Red Lines, Green Blooms: Assessing The Effects Of Historical Environmental Disparity On Algal Communities In The Twin Cities, Mn, Georgia C. Akins

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

Redlining, a discriminatory housing policy from the 1930s, shaped lastng urban inequalites that may extend to environmental conditons. This study examines links between redlining and urban water quality in the Twin Cites using algal communites as indicators. Across 28 water bodies sampled in 2022 and 2024, physical, chemical, and biological metrics were compared by redlining grade. Results show limited relatonships between redlining and most variables, with only surface water temperature differing significantly. Nutrients and algal diversity were unrelated to redlining, instead reflectng present-day conditons. These findings suggest contemporary factors play a stronger role than redlining in shaping urban freshwater ecosystems.

Multicultural Marketing: Rebranding Chick-Fil-A For Chinese Audiences, Christina Pan May 2026

Multicultural Marketing: Rebranding Chick-Fil-A For Chinese Audiences, Christina Pan

Senior Honors Theses

China is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world, and consumption is its main cause of growth. With a population of 1.4 billion people, many companies want to establish themselves in China. However, China and the United States markets are vastly different, and China’s post-COVID economy makes success increasingly difficult. Factors such as domestic competition, weakening US-China relations, and increased suspicion in foreign products calls for a new marketing and branding approach for United States companies. Fast-food giants such as McDonald’s and KFC have managed success in the past, but one company that also has potential is Chick-Fil-A. This …

The Role Of Viewing Traditionally Gendered Media In Childhood On Influencing Adult Ideas Of Gender Roles And Relationship Ideology, Haille Mark

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Research suggests that the media children watch in their childhood has implications for their socialization, including identity formation, and understanding of gender roles. This study examines the role of children’s films on traditional gender roles and relationship expectations in adulthood. In the current study, female college students were surveyed to assess how the films they watched affected their “MRS” Degree seeking ideology, benevolent sexism, and traditional gender roles. Movies were coded using a scheme, which assesses themes of sexualization, objectification, agency and gender roles. A general linear model (GLM) was used to assess the association. The researcher hypothesizes a relationship …

Fluid Belonging, Soft Boundary, Jingyi Liu May 2026

Fluid Belonging, Soft Boundary, Jingyi Liu

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis conceptualizes cultural identity as a fluid and dynamically generated process shaped through the experience of migration. Drawing on contemporary art practices and theoretical frameworks of diaspora and hybridity, the thesis is structured around four interrelated dimensions: fluid identity, memory fragmentation, material interaction, and spatial displacement.

Within the artist’s practice, traditional techniques are reactivated as both cultural signifiers and material approaches that adapt and transform across shifting contexts. Fragmentation is understood not as the loss of information but as a mode of reassembly. Materials such as ink, textile, and dye function as active agents that carry time and cultural …

The Intersection Of Religion & Politics In The United States: Analyses At The Federal And State Level, Cristina Melissa Pimenta May 2026

The Intersection Of Religion & Politics In The United States: Analyses At The Federal And State Level, Cristina Melissa Pimenta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines the intersection of religion and politics in the United States, particularly concerning Christian Nationalism. Existing scholarship has linked the religio-political ideology to several culturally relevant issues, including xenophobia and nativism, racism, homophobia and transphobia, and anti-vaccine rhetoric. My dissertation continues this research by exploring the impact of Christian Nationalism on reproductive rights and, in turn, on gender equality. I assert that as the saliency of Christian Nationalism in the United States has increased, gender equality has decreased. I also argue that the higher the saliency of Christian Nationalism in an individual state, the lower the gender equality …

Challenges To Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Digital Technology Adoption In Farms: A Multi-Method Approach, Guoqing Zhao, Shaofeng Liu, Xiaoning Chen, Huilan Chen, Xinyi Li, Guoste Pivoraite

Plymouth Business School

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled digital technologies have the potential to transform agriculture by supporting decision-making and automating operations. However, their limited adoptions and scholars’ atheoretical explorations constrain our understanding. Drawing on the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework, we investigate the challenges hindering the AI-enabled technology's adoption in farms using a multi-method approach, including semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis, total interpretive structural modeling, and fuzzy cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis. Our finding shows novelty in several aspects. First, we identify 13 challenges, some of which are underexplored, such as the absence of effective intermediaries in promoting agricultural technology. Second, we developed a hierarchical …

Syrah: A Pipeline To Maximize Spatial Transcriptomics Data Output, Carolyn Brewster, Frederick G Mann, Blair Benham-Pyle, Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Spatial analysis of gene expression patterns has been a key technique for revealing the potential functions of genes. Traditionally, these analyses conducted using in-situ hybridizations and other labor-intensive protocols were constrained to examining only a few candidate genes per sample. However, the advent of spatial transcriptomic techniques like Slide-seqV2 has transformed this field, enabling massively parallel exploration of gene expression patterns within their tissue contexts by pairing spatial locations with RNA sequencing. Despite its potential, Slide-seqV2 datasets often produce fewer usable reads than expected. We have identified that a significant source of errors in the technology stems from the chemical …

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Jung’S Active Imagination: A Review And Hypothesis, Charles R. Fox May 2026

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Jung’S Active Imagination: A Review And Hypothesis, Charles R. Fox

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Active imagination is a key technique of Jungian analysis. Despite its centrality, and its potential importance beyond Jungian psychology to the area of systems neuroscience, psychology, and consciousness studies, there are no known neurological mechanisms underlying this psychological phenomenon. There is a history of using the types of mental imagery used in active imagination to explore consciousness. The development and use of active imagination is briefly reviewed, and a case is developed that the neurology underlying active imagination would be fruitfully explored by considering it a special case of mystical experience. Active imagination primarily uses the right hemisphere processing of …

A Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Consumer Hoarding Behavior During Covid-19: Differences Between Sweden And The United States, Christy M. Cook, Pia A. Albinsson, James E. Stoddard

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This study is a cross-cultural exploration of consumer hoarding behavior during Covid-19; specifically, a comparison between Sweden and the United States. This research analyzes whether Swedish and American consumer hoarding behavior factors of prosocial orientation, consumer resilience and consumer risk-taking propensity reflect identical relationships during less predictable environmental forces (i.e., Covid-19 or global pandemic). Results from Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) show that consumer prosocial orientation is negatively related to consumer hoarding and prosocial orientation is positively related to consumer resilience. In turn, both prosocial orientation and consumer resilience exhibit a positive relationship towards consumer hoarding. Consumer resilience is …

This project investigated the role of touch within a performative context and its potential as a creative intervention within Expressive Arts Therapy. Grounded in phenomenology and intersubjectivity, the study draws on Expressive Arts Therapy (EXAT) and Performance Art frameworks that position meaning as emerging through embodied, co-created experience. Existing literature identifies touch as a primary mode of perception and communication, essential to both physical and emotional well-being, while also noting its increasing absence and regulation within contemporary Western culture. Performance art literature further highlights the body as both medium and site of relational exchange, often dissolving boundaries between performer and …

Fiber Consumption Of Three Lemur Species With Varying Dietary Specializations, Dylan Daniels May 2026

Fiber Consumption Of Three Lemur Species With Varying Dietary Specializations, Dylan Daniels

Honors Capstones

Fiber is an important macronutrient as a source of energy for maintaining animal health. My research question is what is the fiber content of foods consumed by lemur species with different dietary specializations (Propithecus diadema, Eulemur fuvlus, and Hapalemur griseus) and are there seasonal changes? 172 plant foods were collected in Tsinjoarivo, Madagascar during the resource-abundant and lean season. I analyzed these samples using the neutral detergent fiber method, which simulates digestion and measures insoluble fiber. Knowing how much fiber lemurs consume and how they adapt to seasonal variation in the food supply will allow for restorative actions to be …

Enhancing The Diversity And Number Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists: A Proposed Pipeline Program For Underrepresented Students, Alexis Lamoreaux May 2026

Enhancing The Diversity And Number Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists: A Proposed Pipeline Program For Underrepresented Students, Alexis Lamoreaux

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The underrepresentation of minority groups in the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) profession impacts healthcare providers’ diversity and cultural competence. This Final Scholarly Project (FSP) proposes a pipeline program to increase diversity within the CRNA field by providing academic support, mentorship, and clinical exposure to students from underrepresented backgrounds. Given the shortage of anesthesia providers, especially in underserved areas, improving access to the CRNA profession for minority students is critical for enhancing patient outcomes. This FSP suggests establishing mentorship and skill development concepts through a 12-month structured program that targets minorities, first-generation college students, or those from rural backgrounds. The …

Hlafreq: Download And Combine Hla Allele Frequency Data, David A. Wells, Michael Mcauley May 2026

Hlafreq: Download And Combine Hla Allele Frequency Data, David A. Wells, Michael Mcauley

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes encode cell-surface proteins which play an important role in immunity. Since different HLA alleles enable different immune responses, the population frequency of HLA alleles is often considered when designing vaccines (Gulukota & DeLisi, 1996). Specific HLA alleles have been linked to autoimmune disease (Simmonds & Gough, 2007) and associated with adverse drug reactions (Fan et al., 2017). Further, the success of solid organ and stem cell transplants is related to HLA matching between donor and recipient (Fürst et al., 2019; Morishima et al., 2002). We present HLAfreq, a Python package which can be used to …

Employing Zebrafish To Understand Genetic Drivers Of Epilepsy-Related Comorbid Behaviors, Chinwendu Ononuju, Kharma Hall, Olivia Beatty, Scott C. Baraban, Colleen Carpenter-Swanson

Biology Faculty Publications

Children with epilepsy frequently experience a range of significant comorbidities beyond seizures, such as motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and neurodevelopmental delays. In some cases, these comorbidities contribute more significantly to overall disease burden than the seizures themselves. To improve quality-of-life (QOL) for these children, treatment options should be selected that control seizures and ameliorate comorbidities. Unfortunately, such therapeutics remain largely elusive. Addressing this issue requires suitable preclinical models. Here we used CRISPR-generated zebrafish with single-gene mutations linked to pediatric epilepsy and applied clinically-relevant behavioral assays to study the effects of these mutations. Using high-throughput locomotion-based assays, we uncovered errors in …

Background: Ependymoma (EPN) is the third most common pediatric brain tumor with no targeted therapies available to patients. In supratentorial ependymoma, the most frequent driver alteration is a gene fusion between ZFTA and RELA (denoted ZR), leads to constitutive localization of ZR in the nucleus. Because ZR is not currently druggable, we tested whether ZR expression leads to aberrant protein interactions that could represent therapeutic vulnerabilities.

Methods: Using CRISPR-Cas9 pooled screening, we identified many novel druggable ZR interacting proteins including XPO1, CARM1, SMARCA4, and CDK1. We focused on the nuclear export protein (XPO1), given the ability of most XPO1 inhibitors …

Peninsula Medical School

Annona muricata (soursop) is a tropical medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine across Africa, the Caribbean, and parts of South America. While its ethnomedicinal applications span a range of conditions, including infections, inflammation, and anemia-related symptoms, its potential relevance to hematopoiesis has not been systematically examined. This narrative review synthesizes ethnomedicinal knowledge, phytochemical composition, and experimental evidence to explore the biological plausibility by which A. muricata may indirectly influence hematopoietic processes. Bioactive constituents of A. muricata, including flavonoids, polyphenols, and acetogenins, have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties in preclinical models. These effects are particularly relevant given the established …

This thesis examines the gender roles in ancient Greece through a creative lens. It aims to reach an understanding of the inequalities between men and women. Some of these inequalities involve women’s rights, abortion, and divorce. The main goal of this project is to reveal the discrimination women faced in ancient Greece. Once this is accomplished, I will then use the research to create a play inspired by the traditional Greek tragedy format. This play addresses controversial topics of the time and how individuals would have approached them. While there is ample research into the focus of my topic, there …

Inbreeding And The Fall Of The Spanish Habsburg Dynasty, Kira L. Kent May 2026

Inbreeding And The Fall Of The Spanish Habsburg Dynasty, Kira L. Kent

Honors Theses

Inbreeding and the Fall of the Spanish Habsburg Dynasty examines how centuries of consanguineous marriages within the Spanish Habsburg family contributed to the dynasty’s decline and eventual extinction. Focusing on the reign and health of Carlos II of Spain, this study explores how dynastic marriage strategies, which were designed to consolidate political power and preserve royal lineage, ultimately produced severe genetic consequences. This thesis analyzes patterns of intermarriage beginning with Carlos I and continuing through the next four monarchs, highlighting the repeated marriages between close relatives. These practices significantly increased the likelihood of inheriting harmful recessive traits. In addition, this …
