Social Trust Benefits And Sense Of Identification At Dog Parks: An Exploratory Study, Kelly E. Price Apr 2006

Social Trust Benefits And Sense Of Identification At Dog Parks: An Exploratory Study, Kelly E. Price

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Dog parks are growing in popularity across the United States, yet are under researched in the field of recreation and leisure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of research on dog parks, while also exploring the relationships that exist between perceived benefits, social trust, identification with people and place, and dog park usage. On-site surveys were collected from dog park users at two Hampton Roads dog parks between Fall 2003 and Fall 2005. Statistical analyses were run on the data to determine if there was a difference in park usage patterns between various demographic groups …

Understanding Powerpoint Through Rhetoric, Andrea K. Murphy Apr 2006

Understanding Powerpoint Through Rhetoric, Andrea K. Murphy

English Theses & Dissertations

PowerPoint has been described by critics and proponents alike as ubiquitous. This tool, created primarily for the business world, is now found everywhere from elementary school classes to the highest levels of government. Critics of PowerPoint, like Edward Tufte, charge the software with such crimes as the corruption of data and changing the way that people think. Meanwhile, PowerPoint proponents such as Cliff Atkinson and Richard E. Mayer assert PowerPoint's value as an excellent tool that, if designed properly, can take advantage of the promise of research into multimedia theory.

Even as we reconcile these diverse views within a larger …

In Cowboy America, Michelle Mizal-Archer Apr 2006

In Cowboy America, Michelle Mizal-Archer

English Theses & Dissertations

"In Cowboy America" is just as much a coming-of-age memoir about a young writer as it is about the Filipino-American experience. In 16 chapters I recall memories of family members—Grandmother, aunts, uncles and parents—as well as memories of my own. The stories capture events from my childhood years to marriage. The text also encapsulates family events of the past, before I was even born, and brings them to the forefront to show how they have shaped who I am today: a writer who has chosen a career most Asians, and Asian-Americans in general, have decided not to pursue. The memoir …

Self-Reported Attitudes, Concerns, And Behaviors Related To Global Environmentalism: Can A Mandatory Class Make A Difference?, Erin Mehalic

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine what initial attitudes and behaviors first-year college students had about the environment and how they changed as a result of a taking a required global environmentalism course. A second goal in this study was to learn whether there were differences in environmental attitudes and behaviors based on gender and ethnicity. Participants in this study were first-year students at Old Dominion University enrolled in a mandatory general education course, New Portals to Appreciating the Global Environment ( GEN 101 ). An online survey was completed that measured the participants' attitudes and behaviors related …

Ecophysiolgoical Responses Of Schizachyrium Scoparium To Water And Nitrogen Manipulations, Amy Kochsiek, Veronica Ciganda, Neal Bryan, Lena Hite, Tala Awada Apr 2006

Ecophysiolgoical Responses Of Schizachyrium Scoparium To Water And Nitrogen Manipulations, Amy Kochsiek, Veronica Ciganda, Neal Bryan, Lena Hite, Tala Awada

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Nitrogen is increasing in terrestrial ecosystems as a result of agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels. This increase is expected to be accompanied by changes in water availability due to global warming. We examined the effects of nitrogen and water manipulations on Schizachyrium scoparium, one of the dominant grasses in the Great Plains. Schizachyrium scoparium responded positively to watering, with an increase in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water and nitrogen use efficiencies, and water potential. Under watered conditions, fertilization had no significant effect on measured parameters, except for nitrogen-use efficiency. Significant differences appeared between fertilized and nonfertilized plants …

Grazing And Military Vehicle Effects On Grassland Soils And Vegetation, John A. Guretzky, Alan Anderson, Jeffrey Fehmi Apr 2006

Grazing And Military Vehicle Effects On Grassland Soils And Vegetation, John A. Guretzky, Alan Anderson, Jeffrey Fehmi

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Vehicle training, a common disturbance of military lands, is part of a suite of land uses that also includes cattle grazing. Yet, no studies have examined their interaction. Our objective was to review the effects of vehicle training and grazing on grassland soils and vegetation and develop a state-and-transition model that incorporates grazing and training for Fort Hood, TX. Both grazing and training can cause soil compaction and vegetation disturbance, altering hydrology and increasing erosion. While the effects of grazing largely depend on stocking rate, vehicle training causes greater disturbance when wet soils are driven on, when vehicles are turned …

Review Of Windswept: A Passionate View Of The Prairie Grasslands Text And Photographs By Wayne Lynch, Jane Austin Apr 2006

Review Of Windswept: A Passionate View Of The Prairie Grasslands Text And Photographs By Wayne Lynch, Jane Austin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Many people never visit the vast grasslands of the midcontinent, or they cross it with scant attention, speeding down major highways to the more stunning scenery of the Rockies or coastlines. Common perceptions focus on the seemingly boring topography (relatively fiat), near-constant winds, and extreme temperatures. But Wayne Lynch's book of photographs and evocative text captures the subtle, dynamic beauty of the prairie landscape and provides fascinating details about the plants and animals that live there, making even those familiar with this landscape want to look more closely.

Ronald Cerny Publications

Forty-one rice cDNAs encoding protein kinases were fused to the tandem affinity purification (TAP) tag and expressed in transgenic rice plants. The TAP-tagged kinases and interacting proteins were purified from the T1 progeny of the transgenic rice plants and identified by mass spectrometry. Ninety-five percent of the TAP-tagged kinases were recovered. Fifty-six percent of the TAP-tagged kinases were found to interact with other rice proteins. A number of these interactions were consistent with known protein complexes found in other species, validating the TAP-tag method in rice plants. Phosphorylation sites were identified on four of the kinases that interacted with either …

Bionomics Of Larvae Of Parelaphostrongylus Odocoilei (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae) In Experimentally Infected Gastropod Intermediate Hosts, Emily J. Jenkins, S. J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, L. Polley

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei is a protostrongylid parasite that has recently been recognized at several locations in sub-Arctic, but not Arctic, North America. We investigated factors that may determine the distribution of P. odocoilei, including suitable gastropod intermediate hosts, temperature requirements for larval development in gastropods, and larval emergence facilitating overwinter transmission. We collected and experimentally infected gastropods from a site in the sub- Arctic where P. odocoilei is at the northern limit of its distribution. Deroceras laeve, Catinella sp., and Euconulus cf. fulvus, but not members of the Pupillidae, were suitable intermediate hosts. We describe bionomics of larvae …

Information, Litigation, And Common Law Evolution, Keith N. Hylton Apr 2006

Information, Litigation, And Common Law Evolution, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

It is common in the legal academy to describe judicial decision trends leading to new common law rules as resulting from conscious judicial effort. Evolutionary models of litigation, in contrast, treat common law as resulting from pressure applied by litigants. One apparent difficulty in the theory of litigation is explaining how trends in judicial decisions favoring one litigant, and biasing the legal standard, could occur. This article presents a model in which an apparent bias in the legal standard can occur in the absence of any effort toward this end on the part of judges. Trends can develop favoring the …

Modeling The Evolution Of Natural Organic Matter In The Environment With An Agent-Based Stochastic Approach, Xiaorong Xiang, Yingping Huang, Gregory Madey, Steve Cabaniss, Leilani Arthurs, Patricia Maurice

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Natural organic matter (NOM) is ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and it plays a crucial role in the evolution of soils, the transport of pollutants, and the global carbon cycle. NOM is a complex mixture of molecules and is thus heterogeneous in structure and composition. As NOM passes through an ecosystem, it is acted upon by a variety of processes, such as microbial degradation, adsorption to mineral surfaces, and photochemical reactions that can change its properties and reactivity. The evolution of NOM in space and time thus is an important research area in biology, geochemistry, ecology, soil science, and …

Language, image, and ambiance production used to go under the sign of cultural labour. Today, these increasingly gather under the banner of immaterial labour. It is this part of cultural labour, a part of cultural labour most explicitly projecting itself as labour, that I want to discuss in this article.

It’S Not About The Fox: The Untold History Of Pierson V. Post, Bethany R. Berger Apr 2006

It’S Not About The Fox: The Untold History Of Pierson V. Post, Bethany R. Berger

Duke Law Journal

For generations, Pierson v. Post, the famous fox case, has introduced students to the study of property law. Two hundred years after the case was decided, this Article examines the history of the case to show both how it fits into the American ideology of property, and how the facts behind the dispute challenge that ideology. Pierson is a canonical case because it replicates a central myth of American property law: that we start with a world in which no one has rights to anything, and the fundamental problem is how best to convert it to absolute individual ownership. The …

Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu Apr 2006

Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

Polyrhythmic dance compositions from West Africa typically feature an ostinato bell pattern known as a time line. Timbrally distinct, asymmetrical in structure, and aurally prominent, time lines have drawn comment from scholars as keys to understanding African rhythm. This article focuses on the best known and most widely distributed of these, the so-called standard pattern, a seven-stroke figure spanning twelve eighth notes and disposed durationally as <2212221>. Observations about structure (including its internal dynamic, metrical potential, and rotational properties) are juxtaposed with a putative African-cultural understanding (inferred from the firm place of dance in the culture, patterns of verbal discourse, …

Muslim Profiles Post 911: Is Racial Profiling An Effective Counterterrorist Measure And Does It Violate The Right To Be Free From Discrimination?, Bernard E. Harcourt Apr 2006

Muslim Profiles Post 911: Is Racial Profiling An Effective Counterterrorist Measure And Does It Violate The Right To Be Free From Discrimination?, Bernard E. Harcourt

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Racial profiling as a defensive counterterrorism measure necessarily implicates a rights trade-off: if effective, racial profiling limits the right of young Muslim men to be free from discrimination in order to promote the security and well-being of others. Proponents of racial profiling argue that it is based on simple statistical fact and represents “just smart law enforcement.” Opponents of racial profiling, like New York City police commissioner Raymond Kelly, say that it is dangerous and “just nuts.” As a theoretical matter, both sides are partly right. Racial profiling in the context of counterterrorism measures may increase the detection of terrorist …

The Law Of Implicit Bias, Cass R. Sunstein, Christine Jolls Apr 2006

The Law Of Implicit Bias, Cass R. Sunstein, Christine Jolls

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Considerable attention has been given to the Implicit Association Test (IAT), which finds that most people have an implicit and unconscious bias against members of traditionally disadvantaged groups. Implicit bias poses a special challenge for antidiscrimination law because it suggests the possibility that people are treating others differently even when they are unaware that they are doing so. Some aspects of current law operate, whether intentionally or not, as controls on implicit bias; it is possible to imagine other efforts in that vein. An underlying suggestion is that implicit bias might be controlled through a general strategy of “debiasing through …

Student Research

Conservation education is becoming increasingly important as the environment is in growing danger. As technology advances and humans become more concerned with convenience, conservation is getting moved to the back burner. It is important to encourage positive attitudes towards conservation issues, and one way to achieve this is through educating children about the environment and the consequences of our actions. We decided to conduct a field trip in which 6th grade students would have the opportunity to spend the day in the DePauw University Nature Park learning about environmental issues. This field trip is aimed at teaching the students about …
