Internet Standards: How One State's Small Business Web Sites Compare To Expectations, Glenn Muske, Hong Yu, Chia-Ling Khoo

Journal of Extension

Small business owners are increasingly realizing the importance of establishing an Internet presence. The purpose of the study reported here was to evaluate a sample of Web sites of small and often rural businesses and compare how well the Web sites met a set of 40 standards identified in the literature. In general, the Web sites scored well. The largest area of concern was the lack of variety of ways a customer could order or get assistance. Suggestions are provided as to how this information can be used by Extension educators.

Survey Results From Participants Of A Short Course For Dairy Herdsmen, Gerald E. Higginbotham, John H. Kirk

Journal of Extension

A survey was conducted by University of California Cooperative Extension of past attendees of a dairy herdsman short course. The purpose was to determine to what degree course participants were applying course material to their respective position as dairy herdsmen. Overall, 41% of the attendees indicated that they had begun to apply information from the short course on the dairy farm for which they worked. Hispanic attendees appreciated simultaneous translations of presentations. Results from this survey demonstrate the need for a dairy herdsman short course in order for dairy employees to improve their practical skills in dairy herd management.

A Successful Collaborative Research Project: Determining The Effects Of Delayed Castration On Beef Cattle Production And Carcass Traits And Consumer Acceptability, Kevin Heaton, Dale R. Zobell, Daren Cornforth

Journal of Extension

A cooperative, on-ranch study was conducted to determine the effect of time of castration on ADG, carcass characteristics, and consumer preference. Sixty-five bull calves were randomly assigned to three treatments: early castrates (E), weaned castrates (W) and late castrates (L). Results indicated no differences between treatments for ADG, backfat, ending live weight, hot carcass weight, or dressing percentage. Ribeye area and cutability were higher for the L, and marbling score and yield grade were lower for L. Consumer panelists who ate beef regularly identified E as more tender, juicy, and flavorful and had better overall acceptability than W or L.

Real World Evaluation, Drew Lenore Betz, Laura Griner Hill Apr 2006

Real World Evaluation, Drew Lenore Betz, Laura Griner Hill

Journal of Extension

We address the challenges of creating evaluation protocols that serve interests of both researchers and field faculty. WSU Extension used true and retrospective forms of pretest in evaluations of 100 adults attending the Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 Years. We hypothesized that both forms of pretest would show positive change to posttest and that "Desirable" item types would show greater change. Both forms of the test indicated significant change in intervention-related behaviors, with greater change on retrospective tests and socially desirable items. We recommend using both a true pre-test and retrospective pre-test to satisfy researchers and practitioners.

Nature And Norfolk: The History Of The Norfolk Botanical Garden, Cheryl S. White

Institute for the Humanities Theses

If what they say is true, that first impressions are always the most important, then the city of Norfolk, Virginia could impress anyone. The Norfolk Botanical Garden began as approximately 30 acres surrounding Mirror Lake, adjacent to the proposed Norfolk Municipal Airport in 1938. Today the Garden consists of 158 acres that include a variety of garden styles, manmade canals, and extensive educational facilities. It serves as the first and last view visitors have of Norfolk. The Norfolk Botanical Garden is an example of interdisciplinary co-operation. Biology, urban planning, landscape architecture, and various political involvements are all expressed within the …

Association Of Plant Color And Pericarp Color With Colonization Of Grain By Members Of Fusarium And Alternaria In Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Deanna L. Funnell, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Apr 2006

Association Of Plant Color And Pericarp Color With Colonization Of Grain By Members Of Fusarium And Alternaria In Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Deanna L. Funnell, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

White sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) grain from tan plants is more desirable for human or animal consumption. Colonization by Fusarium and Alternaria spp. was assessed for near-isogenic lines differing in wound response (purple or tan) and pericarp color (red or white) in field-grown grain and in greenhouse-grown plants. Seeds were screened on a semi-selective medium for Alternaria and Fusarium. Significantly fewer fungal colonies were obtained from tan plants with white seed, and fewer numbers of Alternaria colonies were obtained from white seed, regardless of plant color, from an irrigated field, while there were no differences in fungal composition …

Systematics And Emerging Infectious Diseases: From Management To Solution, Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P. Hoberg Apr 2006

Systematics And Emerging Infectious Diseases: From Management To Solution, Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The crisis of emerging infectious disease stems from the absence of comprehensive taxonomic inventories of the world's parasites, which includes the world's pathogens. Recent technological developments raise hopes that the global inventory of species, including potential pathogens, can be accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner. The phylogenetics revolution initiated by systematists provides a means by which information about pathogen transmission dynamics can be placed in a predictive framework. Increasingly, that information is widely available in digital form on the internet. Systematic biology is well positioned to play a crucial role in efforts to be proactive in the arena of …

The Web Of Relations: Thinking About Physicians And Patients, Ellen Wright Clayton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Like the other contributors to this symposium, I owe a profound debt to Jay Katz for his intellectual rigor, his gentle but firm Socratic pedagogy, and his unparalleled generosity of time and friendship. I first met Jay during my last year of law school when, at the urging of friends, I enrolled in his seminar on informed consent. By that time, he had collected most of the materials on which he based his important book. Not surprisingly, a single semester could not contain all of that material, so many of us continued on into the second semester. During that time …

Time Constraints Mediate Predator-Induced Plasticity In Immune Function, Condition, And Life History, Robby Stoks, Marjan De Block, Stefanie Slos, Wendy Van Doorslaer, Jens Rolff

Dartmouth Scholarship

The simultaneous presence of predators and a limited time for development imposes a conflict: accelerating growth under time constraints comes at the cost of higher predation risk mediated by increased foraging. The few studies that have addressed this trade-off have dealt only with life history traits such as age and size at maturity. Physiological traits have largely been ignored in studies assessing the impact of environmental stressors, and it is largely unknown whether they respond independently of life history traits. Here, we studied the simultaneous effects of time constraints, i.e., as imposed by seasonality, and predation risk on immune defense, …
