Family Affairs Newsletter 2005-10-01, Jean Vermette Oct 2005

Family Affairs Newsletter 2005-10-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Sidestepping Copyright: British Fairy Tale Anthologies Of The 19th Century, Megan Richardson, Andrew T. Kenyon

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

One question is how in the golden period of fairy tale anthologising the work of the anthologists escaped the complete influence of copyright law with its paradigm of the individually authored work. The answer, it is suggested, lies, in part, in the early anthologists who formed a folklore society, saw themselves as anthropologists of folk culture, and treated copyright as largely irrelevant for the sake of their perception of the common good, and, in part, in the structure of copyright law itself which does not mandate but simply permits proprietary rights to be asserted.

Lysistrata, Women, & War: International Law’S Treatment Of Women In Conflict And Post-Conflict Situations, Emma Lindsay Oct 2005

Lysistrata, Women, & War: International Law’S Treatment Of Women In Conflict And Post-Conflict Situations, Emma Lindsay

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In Part II, the Author considers the synergies between law (particularly international law), literature, and feminism. In Part III, the Author examines the play and outline the binary oppositions that pervade Aristophanes's text: war/peace, public/private, and masculine/ feminine. The Author then considers the binary oppositions in more detail, by investigating how they are reflected in the position of women in contemporary violent conflicts. Using a single example to explore each opposition, the Author looks at violence against women, women's political participation, and social and economic rights to suggest the unreality of the oppositions for women. In so doing, she seeks …

Rating The Special Masters, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

After the 85th General Assembly adjourned in April 2005, the Rogers School District, along with 48 other districts, filed a motion to the state Supreme Court to reopen the landmark Lake View school funding case, accusing the legislature of failing to increase school funding for the 2005-06 school year (see Policy Brief 17). The Supreme Court agreed and on June 9, 2005, reappointed former Justices Bradley D. Jesson and David Newbern as Special Masters to assess the plaintiffs’ claims. The Masters issued their report on October 3, 2005, concluding that “the state has not lived up to the promise made …

Naep 2005 Results, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as “the Nation’s Report Card,” is a national assessment of what students in each state know in various subjects. The Grade 4 and 8 mathematics and reading portions of the NAEP were administered in 2005 and the results were released in mid-October. This brief fact sheet highlights the recent NAEP results and demonstrates, simply put, that the state’s students are gaining ground on the nation according to the NAEP.

A First Look At The Impacts Of District And School Consolidation, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

For over two decades, the “fairness” of Arkansas’ educational system has been assessed by the courts. The 2002 Lake View ruling by the Arkansas Supreme Court required the state to “adequately and equitably” fund the education system. Since the Supreme Court’s decision, state policymakers and education officials have worked to rectify problems highlighted in the Lake View case. Perhaps the most controversial plan was to consolidate several of Arkansas’ school districts.

Superintendents Speak Out On Education Reforms, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

In an effort to improve educational opportunities for all students, Arkansas has made education reforms in many areas over the past three years. The Office for Education Policy (OEP) recently distributed a confidential survey to superintendents across the state to see what kinds of successes districts are having as a result of these reforms and what challenges they still face. OEP also asked superintendents about teacher quality and supply issues in their districts, particularly in light of No Child Left Behind’s (NCLB) requirement that all schools be staffed with “highly-qualified teachers.”

An American "Classic": Hillman And Cullen's Mimes Of The Courtesans, Thomas E. Jenkins Oct 2005

An American "Classic": Hillman And Cullen's Mimes Of The Courtesans, Thomas E. Jenkins

Classical Studies Faculty Research

This is a study in classical reception, one that examines the ways in which a work of erotic classical literature was appropriated in the 1920s for a specific social and artistic goal: pornography with a point. More specifically, I analyze how Lucian’s Dialogues of the Courtesans, a work often located on the periphery of the classical canon, became a nexus of sorts for (homo)sexual discourse in the 1920s and 1930s, and how a specific edition of this work demonstrates the interplay between contemporary social trends and the interpretation of the classical world. In 1928, the charmingly named Press of …

The Odd Man Out: The Kings In Corneille's Machine Plays, Nina Ekstein Oct 2005

The Odd Man Out: The Kings In Corneille's Machine Plays, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Andromède and La Conquête de la Toison d’or have a largely unenviable status in Corneille’s oeuvre. They are often either dismissed or marginalized, and almost inevitably read as different from, and therefore inferior to, the more canonical Cornelian works. In fact, both plays are richer and more interesting than commonly thought, as I hope to suggest by an examination of the curious and curiously similar role of the king.

Computing Mean And Variance Under Dempster-Shafer Uncertainty: Towards Faster Algorithms, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang, Scott Ferson Oct 2005

Computing Mean And Variance Under Dempster-Shafer Uncertainty: Towards Faster Algorithms, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang, Scott Ferson

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we only have partial information about the actual probability distribution. For example, under Dempster-Shafer uncertainty, we only know the masses m1,...,mn assigned to different sets S1,...,Sn, but we do not know the distribution within each set Si. Because of this uncertainty, there are many possible probability distributions consistent with our knowledge; different distributions have, in general, different values of standard statistical characteristics such as mean and variance. It is therefore desirable, given a Dempster-Shafer knowledge base, to compute the ranges of possible values of mean E and of variance V.

In their recent paper, A. T. …
