Limitations And Potentials Of Current Motif Discovery Algorithms, Jianjun Hu, Bin Li, Daisuke Kihara Oct 2005

Limitations And Potentials Of Current Motif Discovery Algorithms, Jianjun Hu, Bin Li, Daisuke Kihara

Faculty Publications

Computational methods for de novo identification of gene regulation elements, such as transcription factor binding sites, have proved to be useful for deciphering genetic regulatory networks. However, despite the availability of a large number of algorithms, their strengths and weaknesses are not sufficiently understood. Here, we designed a comprehensive set of performance measures and benchmarked five modern sequence-based motif discovery algorithms using large datasets generated from Escherichia coli RegulonDB. Factors that affect the prediction accuracy, scalability and reliability are characterized. It is revealed that the nucleotide and the binding site level accuracy are very low, while the motif level accuracy …

Surveying The Stakeholder: Understanding Public Perception Of The New Hampshire Estuaries Project, New Hampshire Estuaries Project

PREP Reports & Publications

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) commissioned The UNH Survey Center to conduct two surveys to assist in the implementation and evaluation of the 2004 NHEP Strategic Communication Plan. Both surveys were completed and the results are informing outreach activities. The attitudinal survey of the Planning Board members and Conservation Commissioners in coastal watershed communities suggested that there is moderate familiarity and awareness of the NHEP, with 57% of respondents expressing some level of familiarity with the NHEP. Respondents who live in Zone A seem to be much more likely to be familiar with the NHEP (13% are very familiar; …

Forging A Multilayered System Of Global Governance, Charlotte Ku Oct 2005

Forging A Multilayered System Of Global Governance, Charlotte Ku

Faculty Scholarship

The world in which we find ourselves today is no longer governable entirely by resort to the classical system of international law. Even more seriously, it would seem that the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter are no longer being served sufficiently in light of new concerns. The text adopted in 1945 does not convey the image of a world tormented by terrorists. Nor does it reflect the most pressing commitments of our time: to democratic governance, to environmental responsibility, and to a freer and more equitable system of world trade. Increasingly, the international law community acknowledges the …

Direct Enumeration Of Alloy Configurations For Electronic Structural Properties, Gus L. W. Hart, Peter A. Graf, Kwiseon Kim, Wesley B. Jones

Faculty Publications

We present and apply an approach to directly enumerate the band gaps and effective masses of all possible zinc blende-based alloy configurations whose unit cell contains up to a specified number of atoms. This method allows us to map the space of band gaps and effective masses versus alloy composition and atomic configuration. We demonstrate that a large number of band gaps and effective masses are available. We also discuss convergence of the method with respect to unit cell size and the combined optimization of band gap and effective mass for AlGaAs and GaInP semiconductor alloys.

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

This review was conducted to study the diagnosis, treatment, and growth progression in infants and adolescents with familial hypophosphatemic rickets. The bibliographic search was carried out utilizing the electronic databases MEDLINE, OVID, and LILACS and by direct research within the last 15 years using the keywords rickets, familial hypophosphatemia, vitamin D deficiency, stature growth, childhood, and adolescence. Article selection was done by comparing the evaluation of the growth in patients with familial hypophosphatemic rickets, including the variables that might affect them, for possible future therapeutic proposals. It is concluded that the most significant fact in the treatment of familial hypophosphatemic …

Nl Or Al, Or What's The Difference?, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 2005

Nl Or Al, Or What's The Difference?, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The first two rounds of the playoffs have produced some amazing baseball, although once again I have been struck by the fact that FOX Sports, as did previous networks, continue to trot out inadequate and second rate announcers and analysts to present this high level of play and drama. With all of the excellent talent working major league baseball across the nation, one wonders how difficult it must be for the major networks to ignore the best and settle for second best, or at times even less.

A Visual Method For Indexing Muskrat Populations, Richard M. Engeman, Desley A. Whisson Oct 2005

A Visual Method For Indexing Muskrat Populations, Richard M. Engeman, Desley A. Whisson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The native range for muskrats (Ondatru zibethicus) includes much of North America, but they also have been introduced beyond their native range, including into the Fall River, California, where they have come into conflict with human interests. An easily applied method to assess their abundance is an important need for their management. We developed a muskrat visual index (MVI) to provide the information necessary to address this need. Observations were made at randomly located sites along the river. The number of muskrats observed during a 45 min period was recorded during the late afternoon peak activity time at each …

Beyond The Economic Catalyst Debate: Can Consumption Benefits Justify A Municipal Stadium Investment?, Charles Andrew Santo Oct 2005

Beyond The Economic Catalyst Debate: Can Consumption Benefits Justify A Municipal Stadium Investment?, Charles Andrew Santo

Dissertations and Theses

The issue of public investment in sports facilities has garnered a great deal of attention from economists and public affairs researchers; however, relevant empirical research has become mired in a stagnant discussion of whether sports stadiums can serve as economic catalysts. A host of empirical studies have indicated that stadiums and arenas have no significant impact on metropolitan area income or employment. In light of this evidence, the continued proliferation of public investment in sports facilities, begs the question: is there some other justification for this spending, or are policymakers simply acting against the public interest (either irrationally, or in …

Physics

Cuoricino is a taking data bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νDBD) of 130Te. The detector consists of an array of large cubic TeO2 crystal bolometers. Cuoricino works at about 10 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Good energy resolutions were obtained (2.1 keV at 911 keV and 3.9 keV at 2615 keV at best). The counting rate in the region of 0νDBD is 0.18±0.02 c/keV/kg/y. The limit for the 0νDBD half lifetime is 2.0 × 1024 years at the 90% of C.L. This results correspond to a limit for the effective neutrino mass …
