Development Of Laser System To Measure Pavement Rutting, Hongzhi Wang Oct 2005

Development Of Laser System To Measure Pavement Rutting, Hongzhi Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Asphalt pavement rutting is one of the most common and destructive pavement distresses observed on U.S. roads, particularly in the urban environment at intersections. They are an important indicator of the structural integrity of the pavement as well as having an impact on road user safety. For these reasons, most road agencies regularly monitor the levels of rut depths on their pavement. There are four technologies used for estimating rut depth in automated measurement way: ultrasonics, point lasers, scanning lasers, Optical.

This thesis will focus on the development of the laser scanner rut depth measurement system, including the improvement of …

Charge-Mediated Recognition Of N-Terminal Tryptophan In Aqueous Solution By A Synthetic Host, Meghan E. Bush, Nicole D. Bouley, Adam R. Urbach Oct 2005

Charge-Mediated Recognition Of N-Terminal Tryptophan In Aqueous Solution By A Synthetic Host, Meghan E. Bush, Nicole D. Bouley, Adam R. Urbach

Chemistry Faculty Research

The molecular recognition of peptides and proteins in aqueous solution by designed molecules remains an elusive goal with broad implications for basic biochemical research and for sensors and separations technologies. This paper describes the recognition of N-terminal tryptophan in aqueous solution by the synthetic host cucurbit[8]uril (Q8). Q8 is known to form 1:1:1 heteroternary complexes with methyl viologen (MV) and a second aromatic guest. Here, the complexes of Q8·MV with (i) the four natural aromatic α-amino acids, (ii) four singly charged tryptophan derivatives, and (iii) four tryptophan-containing tripeptides were characterized by isothermal titration calorimetry, mass spectrometry, and UV−visible, fluorescence, and …

Work In Progress - An Investigation Into The Effect Of An Institutional Honor Code Policy On Academic Behavior, Donald D. Carpenter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Matthew Mayhew Oct 2005

Work In Progress - An Investigation Into The Effect Of An Institutional Honor Code Policy On Academic Behavior, Donald D. Carpenter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Matthew Mayhew

Materials Engineering

Research indicates significant cheating at institutions of higher learning; however, evidence indicates that a well-designed and clearly-communicated campus honor code might have a mitigating effect. This is the impetus behind the implementation of an Academic Honor Code Policy at a private university beginning in the fall of 2004. This situation presented a unique opportunity to investigate the potential of an academic honor code to change the culture and behavior at a university. This investigation will involve conducting a longitudinal study on the academic habits of students as they progress through the curriculum and include students whose academic careers began under …

The Ballet Model In Engineering Classes – What Works, What Doesn't, And What's New, Blair London, Lisa Deyo Oct 2005

The Ballet Model In Engineering Classes – What Works, What Doesn't, And What's New, Blair London, Lisa Deyo

Materials Engineering

Six different engineering courses were taught using aspects of the classical ballet instruction model in organization, teaching methods, and learning strategies. There was a strong focus on performance. The courses spanned sophomore to senior levels. Some aspects of the ballet model worked well: setting rules for the Sacred Space for learning, the beginning activity (“stretch”), the overall organization of the class session, communicating the known ideal, including historical background, and using demonstrations. Some aspects did not work (thus far): exams are not yet performances on stage, little practice or rehearsal occurs, little competition between students occurs, asking students questions in …

Enhancing Undergraduate Ai Courses Through Machine Learning Projects, Ingrid Russell, Zdravko Markov, Todd W. Neller, Susan Coleman Oct 2005

Enhancing Undergraduate Ai Courses Through Machine Learning Projects, Ingrid Russell, Zdravko Markov, Todd W. Neller, Susan Coleman

Computer Science Faculty Publications

It is generally recognized that an undergraduate introductory Artificial Intelligence course is challenging to teach. This is, in part, due to the diverse and seemingly disconnected core topics that are typically covered. The paper presents work funded by the National Science Foundation to address this problem and to enhance the student learning experience in the course. Our work involves the development of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics through a unifying theme of machine learning. A suite of hands-on semester-long projects are developed, each involving the design and implementation of a learning system that enhances a …
