The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation Of Galaxies With Extended Rotation Curves And The Stellar Mass Of Rotating Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Oct 2005

The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation Of Galaxies With Extended Rotation Curves And The Stellar Mass Of Rotating Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

I investigate the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of galaxies with extended 21 cm rotation curves spanning the range 20 km s-1 ≲ Vf ≤ 300 km s-1. A variety of scalings of the stellar mass-to-light ratio Υ* are considered. For each prescription for Υ*, I give fits of the form Md = AVfx. Presumably, the prescription that comes closest to the correct value will minimize the scatter in the relation. The fit with minimum scatter has A = 50 M⊙ km-4 s4 and x = 4. This relation holds over five decades in mass. Galaxy color, stellar fraction, …

Balance Of Dark And Luminous Mass In Rotating Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Oct 2005

Balance Of Dark And Luminous Mass In Rotating Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

A fine balance between dark and baryonic mass is observed in spiral galaxies. As the contribution of the baryons to the total rotation velocity increases, the contribution of the dark matter decreases by a compensating amount. This poses a fine-tuning problem for ÎCDM galaxy formation models, and may point to new physics for dark matter particles or even a modification of gravity.

Review Of Jean-Nicolas Illouz, Le Symbolisme, Marshall C. Olds Oct 2005

Review Of Jean-Nicolas Illouz, Le Symbolisme, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

As emphases in literary studies have shifted away from structuralist, semiotic, and other modes of reading informed by theory toward historically-oriented esthetic and cultural analysis, we have needed a new examination of Symbolism that would account for its complexities both as a literary and artistic movement and as a “compound moment” in literary and cultural history. Jean-Nicolas Illouz has provided the foundation for such a reexamination. His study is, to my knowledge, the most complete and nuanced overview of the movement that we have, bringing together in a historically informed and carefully researched reading of Symbolism as both the point …

Summary Of Wood V. Safeway, Inc., 121 Nev. Adv. Op. 73, Michael Shalmy

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

A mentally handicapped female working for Safeway Stores, Inc. was sexually assaulted at work by an employee of a company that provided janitorial services for Safeway. The assaults occurred in a storage room and in the parking lot while she was gathering shopping carts. She filed a complaint against Safeway and the janitorial company, Action Cleaning, alleging five causes of action as a result of the sexual assault. The district court granted summary judgment in favor of Safeway, determining that Safeway was immune from suit because of coverage provided by the Nevada Industrial Insurance Act (the “NIIA”). The district court …

Acoustic Waves Generated By Gusty Flow Over Hilly Terrain, R. L. Walterscheid, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D. Oct 2005

Acoustic Waves Generated By Gusty Flow Over Hilly Terrain, R. L. Walterscheid, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.

Publications

We examine the generation of acoustic waves by gusty flow over hilly terrain. We use simple theoretical models of the interaction between terrain and eddies and a linear model of acoustic-gravity wave propagation. The calculations presented here suggest that over a dense array of geographically extensive sources orographically generated vertically propagating acoustic waves can be a significant cause of thermospheric heating. This heating may account in good part for the thermospheric hot spot near the Andes reported by Meriwether et al. (1996, 1997).

Excess Infrared Radiation From The Massive Daz White Dwarf Gd 362: A Debris Disk?, Mukremin Kilic, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al. Oct 2005

Excess Infrared Radiation From The Massive Daz White Dwarf Gd 362: A Debris Disk?, Mukremin Kilic, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.

Publications

We report the discovery of excess K-band radiation from the massive DAZ white dwarf star GD 362. Combining infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations, we show that the excess radiation cannot be explained by a stellar or substellar companion, and is likely to be caused by a debris disk. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 18 years after G29-38, the only single white dwarf currently known to be orbited by circumstellar dust. Both of these systems favor a model with accretion from a surrounding debris disk to explain the metal abundances observed in DAZ white dwarfs. …
