Total Syntheses Of (+)-Geldanamycin, (-)-Ragaglitazar, And (+)-Kurasoin A And Phase-Transfer-Catalyzed Asymmetric Alkylation, Erik J. Hicken
Theses and Dissertations
Geldanamycin possesses various biological activities as seen in the NCI 60 cell line panel (13 nM avg., 70 nM SKBr-3 cells). The predominant mode of action providing these unique results arises from the ability of geldanamycin (GA) to bind to the chaperone heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90). Despite its complicated functionality, the first total synthesis of GA was accomplished, which included two new reactions developed specifically to address the stereochemical features. The final step in the synthesis of GA was a demethylation-oxidation sequence to generate the desired para-quinone. This step could only be accomplished with HNO3/AcOH, producing GA in …

So here I am, a week late arriving home, stuck between Colombia, Guatemala and Harrisonburg when our world changed. The images flash even in my sleep. The heart of America ripped. Though natural, the cry for revenge and the call for the unleashing of the first war of this century, prolonged or not, seems more connected to social and psychological processes of finding a way to release deep emotional anguish, a sense of powerlessness, and our collective loss than it does as a plan of action seeking to redress the injustice, promote change and prevent it from ever happening again. …

You Can't Take It With You: Constitutional Consequences Of Interstate Gender-Identity Rulings, Julie A. Greenberg, Marybeth Herald
Washington Law Review
Recent U.S. decisions establishing a person's legal sex have adopted a kaleidoscope of approaches that range from the procreative (a man must be able to fertilize ovum and beget offspring, while a woman must be able to produce ova and bear offspring), to the religious (gender is immutably fixed by our Creator at birth), to the scientific (gender itself is a fact that may be established by medical and other evidence). Under current laws and state court rulings, a male-to-female transsex person is legally a woman in approximately one-half of the states and legally a man in the other half. …

Policing The Border Between Trademarks And Free Speech: Protecting Unauthorized Trademark Use In Expressive Works, Pratheepan Gulasekaram
Washington Law Review
Artists and other creators of expressive works often include trademarks and trademarked products as part of their works. They do so for a number of reasons, including lighthearted humor, critical cultural commentary, parody, or even simply to shock. In instances where such use is both unauthorized by and perceived as disparaging to the mark owner or the trademarked product, owners have attempted to sue under trademark law to enjoin the expressive use. This Article argues that, under a proper analysis of trademark law, precedent, and the free expression ideal enshrined in the First Amendment, mark owners should rarely, if ever, …

Solomon's Choice: The Spending Clause And First Amendment Rights In Forum For Academic & Institutional Rights V. Rumsfeld, Emily R. Hutchinson
Washington Law Review
The Solomon Amendment denies federal funding to institutions of higher education that interfere with military recruiting on campus. In Forum for Academic & Institutional Rights v. Rumsfeld, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit examined the constitutionality of the Solomon Amendment using traditional First Amendment analysis. The court applied strict scrutiny and held that it was reasonably likely that the Solomon Amendment impermissibly infringed the First Amendment rights of an association of law schools and law faculty. This Note argues that the Solomon Amendment is a valid exercise of Congress's constitutionally-mandated duties to spend for the …
Risky Business: Directors Making Business Judgments In Washington State, Adam J. Richins
Risky Business: Directors Making Business Judgments In Washington State, Adam J. Richins
Washington Law Review
Section 23B.08.300 of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) defines the general standards of conduct for directors in discharging corporate duties. The Washington State Legislature developed these standards to govern the manner in which directors perform their duties, rather than to impose liability on directors for negligent business decisions under the business judgment rule. Indeed, the business judgment rule, as defined by leading corporate-law jurisdictions and the American Bar Association, generally protects directors from liability associated with negligent business decisions so long as the director makes decisions in good faith, on an informed basis, without self-interest, and in accordance with …

Efficient Xquery Processing Of Streamed Xml Fragments, Seo Young Ahn
Efficient Xquery Processing Of Streamed Xml Fragments, Seo Young Ahn
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
XStreamCast is a push-based streamed XML query processing system that supports multiple servers and clients. The servers broadcast streamed XML data while the clients register to these servers for a specific service and process streamed XML fragments. This thesis presents methods for efficient XQuery processing of streamed XML fragments for the client. The XQuery parser parses the XQuery given by the user first. The client processes the fragments and stores only the needed data for the query. The query is then applied to stored XML fragments. This system can be valuable for managing the memory of the client because it …
Investigation Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer With Nanofluids, Gilberto Moreno
Investigation Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer With Nanofluids, Gilberto Moreno
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This investigation conducts pool boiling experiments under saturated conditions (Tsat=60°C) using nanofluids as coolants. Four different nanofluids were tested including zinc oxide (ZnO)-water, aluminum oxide (Al2O3)-water, aluminum oxide (Al2O3)-water+ethylene glycol (ethylene glycol solution) and gold (Au)-water. At saturation (Tsat=60 °C), the pool boiling performance of Al2O3-water and ZnO-water nanofluids were similar. The maximum CHF enhancement as compared to predicted Zuber's [1] CHF evaluated at an equivalent saturation temperature is about 180% for Al2O3-water nanofluids and about 240% for ZnO-water nanofluids. In both cases, no degradation in the boiling heat transfer rate was observed for lower nanoparticle concentrations. The dispersion of …
The Thermal Characteristics Of Liquid-Heat-Spreader, Sang Muk Kwark
The Thermal Characteristics Of Liquid-Heat-Spreader, Sang Muk Kwark
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The present study is an experimental research of a liquid-heat-spreader (LHS) with saturated water at ~2.29 psia. A LHS, indirect liquid cooling module, was successfully fabricated using thin copper blocks and copper tubes using solder. Three types of LHS, Flat-type, L-type, and T-type, were developed for different orientations and were compared with solid metal blocks such as aluminum and copper. The Flat-type LHS, 100 (W) × 254 (L) × 3 (T) mm3, was designed for vertical orientation. It showed a remarkable thermal performance by dissipating heat flux of 119 W/cm2 with below 100? chip temperature at the typical condition. The …
A Cmos Ultra-Wideband Differential Low Noise Amplifier, Timothy Bryan Merkin
A Cmos Ultra-Wideband Differential Low Noise Amplifier, Timothy Bryan Merkin
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
In this thesis, a CMOS Ultra-wideband (UWB) Low noise Amplifier (LNA) was designed and simulated. In the design, specific architecture decisions were made in consideration of ultimately including this LNA in a system-on-chip implementation of an Ultra-wideband communication system. The basic architecture of the LNA designed herein exhibits a differential amplifier core with active input and output impedance matching, minimizing the number of expensive space consuming passive inductors necessary for passive impedance matching networks. The LNA maintains a gain of 16.4dB with a ±0.25dB ripple over the band of 3.1-6.2GHz. Despite the use of an active input matching stage, the …
Cmos 5th Derivative Gaussian Impulse Generator For Uwb Application, Shin-Chih Chang
Cmos 5th Derivative Gaussian Impulse Generator For Uwb Application, Shin-Chih Chang
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
A complete impulse generating system was designed and simulated which generates the fifth order derivative of the Gaussian pulse intended for use in an impulse-type ultra-wideband wireless communication system. By using a continuous-time FIR impulse shaping filter, the system transforms a normal Gaussian pulse signal obtained from an existing CMOS Gaussian pulse generator into its fifth derivative. The transformation filtering was accomplished without lengthening the time duration of the original pulse or causing any noticeable ringing effects. The final output waveform closely resembles the fifth derivative of the Gaussian pulse, and also satisfies the spectral mask emission requirements specified by …

Evaluating Consumer Acceptability And Willingness To Pay For Various Beef Chuck Muscles, A.C. Kukowski, R.J. Maddock, D.M. Wulf, G.L. Taylor
Animal Science Faculty Publications
In-home consumer steak evaluations, followed by centralized laboratory-setting auctions, were used to determine consumer (n = 74 consumers) acceptability and willingness to pay for various beef chuck muscles. The infraspinatus (IF), serratus ventralis (SV), supraspinatus (SS), and triceps brachii (TB) from the beef chuck were evaluated against LM steaks from the rib to determine price and trait differentials. Muscles from USDA Choice, boneless, boxed-beef subprimals were aged 14 d, frozen, and cut into 2.5-cmthick steaks. Consumers received two steaks from each muscle for in-home evaluations of uncooked steak appearance and cooked steak palatability. After in-home evaluation of steaks, consumers participated …

Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items
In June 2003, Winifred S. “Winnie” Foster donated a collection of clippings, photographs, and archival materials that document her involvement in local civil liberties activities and the development of commercial activities at the Central Plaza Shopping Center. Born in 1927, Winnie grew up in a Quaker home environment. She and other farm girls in rural Ohio often made clothes from feed sacks. As she came of age, she embraced the Quaker tradition of pacifism and commitment for equality. She and her husband, also a Quaker, moved to Rhode Island and supported liberal causes. Like many of her generation, she was …
