An Overview Of Central Dizin Phonology And Morphology, Marvin Dean Beachy Nov 2005

An Overview Of Central Dizin Phonology And Morphology, Marvin Dean Beachy

Linguistics & TESOL Theses - Archive

Dizin (Dizi) is an Omotic language spoken in Southwest Ethiopia with three main dialects. This thesis focuses on Central Dizin phonology and morphology, but includes some data from Eastern Dizin and Western Dizin. Prolonged language contact with Amharic has affected the sound system of Dizin and numerous Amharic words have been borrowed. Features of the Dizin sound system include glottalized consonants, syllabic nasals, lengthened vowels, three phonemic tone levels and contour tones. Western Dizin has phonemic retroflex consonants. The glottal stop is analyzed as phonemic word initially before nasals, but not phonemic elsewhere. Dizin is polysynthetic and more agglutinative than …

The Secret Life Of Mundane Transaction Costs, Richard N. Langlois Nov 2005

The Secret Life Of Mundane Transaction Costs, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

Transaction costs, one often hears, are the economic equivalent of friction in physical systems. Like physicists, economists can sometimes neglect friction in formulating theories; but like engineers, they can never neglect friction in studying how the system actually does let alone should work. Interestingly, however, the present-day economics of organization also ignores friction. That is, almost single-mindedly, the literature analyzes transactions from the point of view of misaligned incentives and (especially) transaction-specific assets. The costs involved are certainly costs of running the economic system in some sense, but they are not obviously frictions. Stories about frictions in trade are not …

An Economic Model Of Fair Use, Thomas J. Miceli, Richard P. Adelstein Nov 2005

An Economic Model Of Fair Use, Thomas J. Miceli, Richard P. Adelstein

Economics Working Papers

The doctrine of fair use allows limited copying of creative works based on the rationale that copyright holders would consent to such uses if bargaining were possible. This paper develops a formal model of fair use in an effort to derive the efficient legal standard for applying the doctrine. The model interprets copies and originals as differentiated products and defines fair use as a threshold separating permissible copying from infringement. The analysis highlights the role of technology in shaping the efficient standard. Discussion of several key cases illustrates the applicability of the model.

Confronting Race In The Composition Classroom, Kay A. Mooy Nov 2005

Confronting Race In The Composition Classroom, Kay A. Mooy

Rhetoric and Composition PhD papers

My premise is that the resources and opportunities in a society are unequally distributed among individuals according to group membership (race, gender, class, sexual orientation, etc.). Social institutions systematically reproduce inequalities that favor the dominant group and oppress others. I discuss using feminist pedagogy and contact/conflict zones be used in different ways to free classrooms from the invisible hegemonic theory of whiteness, which underpins all we do in our classrooms. bell hooks says we need to have "transformative" pedagogy. This paper will include methods to transform that pedagogy. No education is politically neutral. I propose decentering Western civilization to recognize …

Interannual Variability In North American Grassland Biomass/Productivity Detected By Seawinds Scatterometer Backscatter, Steve Frolking, Mark Fahnestock, Tom Milliman, Kyle Mcdonald, John Kimball Nov 2005

Interannual Variability In North American Grassland Biomass/Productivity Detected By Seawinds Scatterometer Backscatter, Steve Frolking, Mark Fahnestock, Tom Milliman, Kyle Mcdonald, John Kimball

Earth Sciences

We analyzed 2000–2004 growing-season SeaWinds Ku-band microwave backscatter and MODIS leaf area index (LAI) data over North America. Large anomalies in mid-growing-season mean backscatter and LAI, relative to 5-year mean values, occurred primarily in the western Great Plains; backscatter and LAI anomalies had similar spatial patterns across this region. Backscatter and LAI time series data for three ∼103 km2 regions in the western Great Plains were strongly correlated (r2 ∼ 0.6–0.8), and variability in mid-growing season values was well-correlated with annual precipitation (October through September). The results indicate that SeaWinds backscatter is sensitive to interannual variability in …

Introduction To Gendering Modern Japanese History, Barbara Molony Nov 2005

Introduction To Gendering Modern Japanese History, Barbara Molony

History

Gender, as Joan Scott asserted in 1986, is a useful category of historical analysis.1 In the last quarter century, gender has emerged as a lively area of inquiry for historians and other scholars. Gender analysis has suggested some important revisions of the "master narratives" of national histories-that is, the dominant, often celebratory, tales of the successes of a nation and its leaders.2 These narratives, like all histories, are provisional and incomplete and, to varying degrees, reflect the changing material, discursive, and ideological contexts of their times.3 To mention just two of the fields of history that had …

Measurement Of Interfacial Shear Mechanical Properties In Thermal Barrier Coating Systems By A Barb Pullout Method, S. Q. Guo, D. R. Mumm, Anette M. Karlsson, Y. Kagawa

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A test technique has been developed to facilitate evaluation of the fracture characteristics of coatings and interfaces in thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. The methodology has particular application in analyzing delamination crack growth, where crack propagation occurs under predominantly mode II loading. The technique has been demonstrated by quantitatively measuring the effective delamination fracture resistance of an electron-beam physical vapor deposition TBC.

The Quest For Women's Rights In Turn-Of-The-Century Japan, Barbara Molony Nov 2005

The Quest For Women's Rights In Turn-Of-The-Century Japan, Barbara Molony

History

This chapter will discuss the goals of women's rights advocates and the meaning of their demands in the context of turn-of-the-century state and society formation. It examines women's rights discourses in late nineteenth-century periodicals, some of them directed to a female readership and some directed to a general, often male, audience. Sources include journals like Meiroku zasshi, Jogaku zasshi, Joken, Tokyo fujin kyofukai zasshi, and some regional publications. 25 Nineteenth-century advocates for women were, of course, of varying minds about the definition of “women’s rights,” but all agreed that women did not have rights at that time. Some argued for …

Sunday In The Park With George: A Musical Curation By Stephen Sondheim, Amy Riordan Nov 2005

Sunday In The Park With George: A Musical Curation By Stephen Sondheim, Amy Riordan

English Theses - Archive

This analysis serves to reveal the strong interconnectedness between museums and theatre (mentioned only briefly by other scholars) as uniquely demonstrated by Stephen Sondheim's musical, Sunday in the Park with George. Because Sondheim chose George Seurat's museum-housed painting, Sunday on the Island La Grande Jatte, as the foundation for his show, museum practices including labels, titles, ways of seeing, and curatorial authority--to which Seurat's painting has already been subjected--can also be located in Stephen Sondheim's musical. However, in the musical the artist is returned authority over his painting, above museum practice and curator bias. By granting the artist such dominion …

The Impact Of Property Flipping On Single Family Detached Home Prices, Wesley H. English Nov 2005

The Impact Of Property Flipping On Single Family Detached Home Prices, Wesley H. English

Business Administration Theses - Archive

In 2003 HUD ruled that flipped properties, which are defined as recently acquired properties that have been resold, often within days, and for a substantial profit, are ineligible for FHA insured mortgage financing. This research uses the HUD ruling as the basis for this study. Their ruling was based on the perception that property flipping had a negative effect on home prices among other things. The study uses hedonic modeling to empirically determine if houses that have previously flipped have any influence on value when compared to the non-flipped properties in the same market. Through a regression analysis, it is …

Supramolecular Chemistry Of Nitrogen Dioxide, Yanlong Kang Nov 2005

Supramolecular Chemistry Of Nitrogen Dioxide, Yanlong Kang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Supramolecular chemistry has been defined as "chemistry beyond molecules", and involves investigating molecular systems held together reversibly by inter-molecular forces, not by covalent bonds. This dissertation discusses a supramolecular approach towards sensing, entrapment and utilization of NO2/N2O4 gases. Chapter 1 briefly discusses supramolecular chemistry and supramolecular chemistry of gases. In chapter 2, the interaction of NOx with metalloporphyrins is described. Specifically, ruthenium nitrosyl derivatives hold a special place in mimicking bio-relevant NO-metal interactions. A previously unnoticed reaction between NO2/N2O4 and a Ru(II) porphyrin is described. It causes disproportionation of N2O4 and leads to a stable nitrosyl nitrato complex. Our findings …

Optimization Of H.264 Baseline Decoder On Arm9tdmi Processor, Sandya B. Sheshadri Nov 2005

Optimization Of H.264 Baseline Decoder On Arm9tdmi Processor, Sandya B. Sheshadri

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

With the newly introduced features and advancements to the pre-existing features, the emerging H.264 video coding standard achieves significant improvements in coding performance over all existing standards, in a wide variety of applications. The coding-efficiency advantages of H.264, however, come at the expense of higher computational complexity. H.264 decoders can exhibit more than double the complexity of H.263 decoders. Furthermore, previous studies have shown that fractional-pixel motion-compensation interpolation and the loop filtering consume a significant amount of computational power in emerging H.264 decoders. Since these operations are part of the baseline profile of H.264, there is a need to evaluate …

A Novel Game Theoretic Framework For Security In Wireless Sensor Networks, Afrand Agah Nov 2005

A Novel Game Theoretic Framework For Security In Wireless Sensor Networks, Afrand Agah

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Due to severe resource limitations and often lack of centralized infrastructure, providing security in wireless sensor networks is a great challenge. Misbehavior due to malicious or faulty nodes can significantly degrade the performance of such networks. Therefore, countermeasures against denial of service (DoS) attacks and node misbehavior are essential requirements. We argue that the conventional view of security based on cryptography techniques is not sufficient for securing wireless sensor networks. In this dissertation, we investigate a novel framework by proposing three approaches for security enforcement in such networks that range from prevention of DoS attacks to secure routing. Prevention of …

Perspectives On Decisionmaking From The Blackmun Papers: The Cases On Arbitrability Of Statutory Claims, Ellen E. Deason Nov 2005

Perspectives On Decisionmaking From The Blackmun Papers: The Cases On Arbitrability Of Statutory Claims, Ellen E. Deason

Missouri Law Review

Judges' decisions must rank among the most documented types of decisionmaking. At the appellate level, in particular, the arguments made to judges are a matter of record and the decisions are recorded in written opinions that provide a reasoned explanation. Yet there are many unknowns about this decisionmaking process. This article draws on information found in the Blackmun Papers collection at the Library of Congress to explore Supreme Court decisionmaking as illustrated in the series of cases that opened the door to welcome arbitration of statutory claims. I The cases brought about the weakening and eventual abrogation of a long-standing …

No More Russian Roulette: Chapter 13 Cram-Down Creditors Take A Bullet, Jon W. Jordan Nov 2005

No More Russian Roulette: Chapter 13 Cram-Down Creditors Take A Bullet, Jon W. Jordan

Missouri Law Review

Until the United States Supreme Court's decision in Till v. SCS Credit Corp., secured creditors in Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases likely viewed the forced acceptance of a debtor's Chapter 13 repayment plan as a high-stakes game of chance. Prior to this decision, the interest rate applied to the deferred payments to "cram-down" creditors varied dramatically, depending upon the jurisdiction in which the debtor filed bankruptcy and the broad discretion of the bankruptcy court judge. However, by misinterpreting the legislative intent of Congress, the Supreme Court adopted a standard that will consistently under-compensate creditors. Suddenly, secured creditors' high-stakes game of chance …
