Phenology And Phoretic Bat Mites Of Calyptrogyne Brachystachys (Arecaceae) Flowers In The Monteverde Cloud Forest, November 2005, Dylan J. Rhea-Fournier Nov 2005

Phenology And Phoretic Bat Mites Of Calyptrogyne Brachystachys (Arecaceae) Flowers In The Monteverde Cloud Forest, November 2005, Dylan J. Rhea-Fournier

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In November 2005 Calyptrogyne brachystachys palm inflorescences were examined for the presence of phoretic bat mites (tribe Melichari) in the Cloud Forest of Monteverde. Sixty-seven Calyptrogyne brachystachys plants were studied over a two-week period for flower and inflorescence phenology. Forty-six inflorescences were examined thoroughly for mite presence of which 11 were found to harbor mites. Flower phenology studies suggest a temporary flowering lag. Abundances of mites on both inflorescence and site scales were found at much lower frequencies than the Atlantic slope (Tschapka and Cunningham 2004), The lower abundance in Monteverde is attributed to abiotic differences such as recent weather …

Inhibitory Processes In Young Children And Individual Variation In Short-Term Memory, Kimberly A. Espy, Rebecca Bull Nov 2005

Inhibitory Processes In Young Children And Individual Variation In Short-Term Memory, Kimberly A. Espy, Rebecca Bull

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

A precise definition of executive control remains elusive, related in part to the variations among executive tasks in the nature of the task demands, which complicate the identification of test-specific versus construct-specific performance. In this study, tasks were chosen that varied in the nature of the stimulus (verbal, nonverbal), response (naming, somatic motor), conflict type (proactive interference, distraction), and inhibitory process (attention control, response suppression) required. Then performance differences were examined in 184 young children (age range = 3 years 6 months to 6 years 1 month), comparing those with high (5 or more digits) and low (3 or fewer …

Book Talk: Continuing To Rouse Minds And Hearts To Life, Cheri F. Triplett, Alisa Buchanan

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

During the spring of 2004, we conducted research exploring the emotions of struggling readers. Specifically we were interested in finding out how school contexts, curriculum, and relationships influence students' experiences of struggle. Students in this study were 14 first, second, and third graders identified for reading intervention at their school. As we analyzed data sources, including field notes, interviews with students and teachers, we concluded that the literacy activities that engaged these students cognitively, motivationally, and emotionally were the book discussions that took place in their reading classroom. However, book discussions were not a part of reading instruction in their …

The Child Client: Representing Children In Child Protective Proceedings, Merril Sobie Nov 2005

The Child Client: Representing Children In Child Protective Proceedings, Merril Sobie

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Part I of this article outlines the historical context and addresses the child's right to legal representation. Part II discusses the child's legal status by defining the specific legal interests, her procedural rights as a party to the litigation, the right to choose counsel, and the child's right to be involved as a participant. The penultimate Part analyzes the role of the child's counsel, including an outline of the relevant statutes, the diametrically opposed positions of state legislatures and the organized bar, and the hopelessly conflicting contemporary case law. The final Part addresses the fundamental deficiencies of the “best interests” …

Students' Role In The Development Of An "Optional Subjects-Line" In A Medical Curriculum, J Van Den Ameele, L Van Crombrugge, E Van Braeckel Nov 2005

Students' Role In The Development Of An "Optional Subjects-Line" In A Medical Curriculum, J Van Den Ameele, L Van Crombrugge, E Van Braeckel

Family and Community Medicine Research and Scholarship

Context: In 1999, the medical curriculum of Ghent University underwent a fundamental change. The new curriculum is problem-based, emphasizing both horizontal and vertical integration. One of its remarkable qualities is the possibility of continuous evolution through permanent reflection and evaluation. The students, organised in the Student's Association on Education, take an active part in this process. Recently, students remarked that the offer of optional subjects in the new curriculum was limited. Apart from the thesis, there was no formal opportunity to gain more in-depth knowledge on an individually chosen subject. Objective: To explore the possibilities of optional subjects in a …

The Effect Of Time Delays On The Stability Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, Chaouki T. Abdallah, John Chiasson, Zhong Tang, Jean Ghanem, J. Douglas Birdwell, Majeed M. Hayat Nov 2005

The Effect Of Time Delays On The Stability Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, Chaouki T. Abdallah, John Chiasson, Zhong Tang, Jean Ghanem, J. Douglas Birdwell, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A deterministic dynamic nonlinear time-delay system is developed to model load balancing in a cluster of computer nodes used for parallel computations. The model is shown to be self consistent in that the queue lengths cannot go negative and the total number of tasks in all the queues and the network are conserved (i.e., load balancing can neither create nor lose tasks). Further, it is shown that using the proposed load balancing algorithms, the system is stable in the sense of Lyapunov. Experimental results are presented and compared with the predicted results from the analytical model. In particular, simulations of …

Sport As A Bridge Across The Racial Divide, Richard E. Lapchick Ph.D. Nov 2005

Sport As A Bridge Across The Racial Divide, Richard E. Lapchick Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 10th Annual National Conference (2005)

In racial tumultuous times, it is not easy to find ways to build a bridge to close the gap between various racial groups. New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina forced America to confront race and poverty in ways we have not been able to do in recent years. With college campuses being the third biggest site for hate crimes in America today, the concept of teamwork in sport presents us with a rare opportunity to bring different racial groups together on an equal playing field. The presentation will focus on this special role sport plays but also elaborate on …

An Emerging Majority: The Changing Face And Language Of Education In Nebraska, Jose J. Soto Jd

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 10th Annual National Conference (2005)

Decision-makers and educators at all levels of our public education system need to assume roles that will serve as strong and unwavering voice for the students and families that our education system consistently fails. It is critically important that we recognize there are things that are terribly wrong with our education system and which obviously need fixing.

Charge Screening By Internal Ph And Polyvalent Cations As A Mechanism For Activation, Inhibition, And Rundown Of Trpm7/Mic Channels, J. Ashot Kozak, Masayuki Matsushita, Angus C. Nairn, Michael D. Cahalan Nov 2005

Charge Screening By Internal Ph And Polyvalent Cations As A Mechanism For Activation, Inhibition, And Rundown Of Trpm7/Mic Channels, J. Ashot Kozak, Masayuki Matsushita, Angus C. Nairn, Michael D. Cahalan

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

The Mg2+-inhibited cation (MIC) current, believed to represent activity of TRPM7 channels, is found in lymphocytes and mast cells, cardiac and smooth muscle, and several other eukaryotic cell types. MIC current is activated during whole-cell dialysis with divalent-free internal solutions. Millimolar concentrations of intracellular Mg2+ (or other divalent metal cations) inhibit the channels in a voltage-independent manner. The nature of divalent inhibition and the mechanism of channel activation in an intact cell remain unknown. We show that the polyamines (spermine, spermidine, and putrescine) inhibit the MIC current, also in a voltage-independent manner, with a potency that parallels …

Keck Hires Spectroscopy Of Four Candidate Solar Twins, Jeremy R. King, Ann M. Boesgaard, Simon C. Schuler

Publications

We use high signal-to-noise ratio, high-resolution Keck HIRES spectroscopy of four solar twin candidates (HIP 71813, 76114, 77718, and 78399) pulled from our Hipparcos-based Ca ii H and K survey to carry out parameter and abundance analyses of these objects. Our spectroscopic Teff estimates are $100 K hotter than the photometric scale of the recent Geneva-Copenhagen survey; several lines of evidence suggest the photometric temperatures are too cool at solar Teff. At the same time, our abundances for the three solar twin candidates included in the Geneva-Copenhagen survey are in outstanding agreement with the photometric metallicities; there is no sign …
