Evaluation Of High Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) In Mapping Strata Of Dolomite And Limestone Rocks For Ripping Technique, Derek Apel, V. Dezelic Dec 2005

Evaluation Of High Frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) In Mapping Strata Of Dolomite And Limestone Rocks For Ripping Technique, Derek Apel, V. Dezelic

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents how high frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be effectively used for mapping the subsurface characterization of dolomite and limestone strata for determination if the rock is suitable for ripping. the results of the experiments conducted in the course of this project illustrated that water saturation helps in increasing the contrast between the dielectric constants of the separations, due to water escaping into cracks and clay layers. Running the survey on a dry rock will give a larger penetration depth; but during the interpretation of the results, one can omit small voids or clay layers. © 2005 …

Free And Costly Trade Credit: A Comparison Of Small Firms, Susan Coleman Dec 2005

Free And Costly Trade Credit: A Comparison Of Small Firms, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Trade credit is a major source of financing for small firms. This article examines the extent to which small firms use trade credit as well as the extent to which they use "free" versus "costly" trade credit. Those firms that use free trade credit make payment within the discount period. Alternatively, firms that use costly trade credit forego available discounts and may also make payment after the due date thereby incurring substantial additional costs. Results reveal that larger firms were more likely to use trade credit. Younger firms were more likely to be denied trade credit and were also more …

The Exit Rates Of Liquidated Venture Capital Funds, Markus Laine, Sami Torstila Dec 2005

The Exit Rates Of Liquidated Venture Capital Funds, Markus Laine, Sami Torstila

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Exit rates provide a simple yet practical measure for evaluating and benchmarking the performance of venture capital funds. We create a sample of 138 liquidated U.S. venture capital funds and investigate the outcomes of their 4,549 portfolio companies. We study exit rates, proportions of different exit routes, and their determinants. The median fund in our sample exited 19% of portfolio companies through an IPO, 7% through a sale of listed equity, and 23% through mergers or acquisitions. There exist, however, interesting differences between fund types: In particular, large funds and fund management firms have significantly higher exit rates.

Financial Ratio Classification And Sub-Sector Discrimination Of Manufacturing Firms Evidence From An Emerging Market, Seref Kalayci, Abdulmecit Karatas, Ali Coskun, Ayhan Kirtas

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This article aims to develop an empirically-based classification of financial ratios for manufacturing firms and to examine whether or not these ratios can be used in differentiating sub-sectors of manufacturing industry. The article involves 160 manufacturing firms which are traded in the emerging Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE). It covers the period between December 1992 and June 1999, and financial ratios of those companies have been calculated for 14 terms. Factor analysis was applied, both to isolate the independent patterns of financial ratios and to create an empirical classification for them. Factor analysis revealed four common factors, namely profitability, solvency/leverage, liquidity, …

The Impact Of Human Capital Measures On Firm Performance: A Comparison By Gender, Race And Ethnicity, Susan Coleman Dec 2005

The Impact Of Human Capital Measures On Firm Performance: A Comparison By Gender, Race And Ethnicity, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Prior research suggests that firms owned by women and minorities are smaller, less profitable, and less growth-oriented than those owned by white men. Prior research also suggests that firm performance is influenced by the firm owner's level of human capital in the form of education, employment experience, and life experiences that might help him to prepare for the challenges of small business ownership. This artical compares the performance of firms owned by white men to those owned by white women and by minority small business owners to determine if higher levels of human capital eliminate performance gaps between them. Results …

Appropriate Measures To Use Money Laundering Prevention As An Antidote To Tax Evasion, Patricia Torres Serpel, Amir Shachmurove Dec 2005

Appropriate Measures To Use Money Laundering Prevention As An Antidote To Tax Evasion, Patricia Torres Serpel, Amir Shachmurove

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Money laundering, which is closely linked with tax evasion and informal trade, is facilitated by the poorly regulated financial institutions of "mafia nations". These nations make billions of dollars by laundering money and giving safe haven to drug dealers and corrupt politicians, allowing them to transfer money globally. Money laundering prevention policies require financial institutions to periodically update their customer's personal information. Furthermore, they attemp to match tax and transaction reports collected from banks and non-banks around the world to detect tax evasion. This research explains how efficient policies for preventing money laundering can help reduce tax evasion.

Tools To Apply To Financial Statements To Identify Errors, Omissions And Fraud In Business Valuations, Tom Clevenger, Gary Baker Dec 2005

Tools To Apply To Financial Statements To Identify Errors, Omissions And Fraud In Business Valuations, Tom Clevenger, Gary Baker

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Often economists are asked to value business. Many times the information provided is minimal and of questionable value. Data may be provided by parties wishing to bias the valuation. The financial statements typically provided are balance sheets and income statements. These sources can be fraught with errors, omissions and even fraud. The cash flow statements derived from these statements can be misleading and any analysis from these spurious statements is sure to be questioned. A set of tools exists that can use to establish the reliability of these financial statements. Reliability is usually taken for granted in basic accounting and …

Who Adds Value To Ventures? Understanding The Roles And Relative Contributions Of Key Advisors In High-Technology Startups, David Y. Choi, Martin Stack Dec 2005

Who Adds Value To Ventures? Understanding The Roles And Relative Contributions Of Key Advisors In High-Technology Startups, David Y. Choi, Martin Stack

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

During the process of starting and growing a company, entrepreneurs seek help from their key advisors, which include its directors, advisory board members, financiers, as well as others informally affiliated with the venture. This paper examines how the various groups add value to a venture and assesses the relative value of their contributions. Through a survey of high technology entrepreneurs, we find that directors, advisory board members and informal advisors add significant value by offering their expertise in various fields. Surprisingly, investors add relatively little value, even in such key areas as strategic planning and finance. While professional venture capitalists …

An Analysis Of Industrial Characteristics And Incentives On Foreign Investment: The Case Of Rapid Economic Growth In Taiwan, Jo-Hui Chen Dec 2005

An Analysis Of Industrial Characteristics And Incentives On Foreign Investment: The Case Of Rapid Economic Growth In Taiwan, Jo-Hui Chen

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study measured the impacts of the industrial characteristics and the fiscal incentives that influenced foreign direct investment. We used the fixed effect model with a 2SLS simultaneous equation for the period of rapid economic growth from 1980 to 1996 across nine industries is Taiwan. We found that the wage and market size are positively correlated with foreign national investors, while exports are negatively correlated with overseas Chinese investors. The results also indicated that the tax holiday and the statute for the promotion of upgrading industries affect foreign national investors positively, but that R&D tax credits are ineffective. The relatively …

More Than Fun And Games: Reconsidering The Virtues Of Strategic Management Simulations, Ken E. Zantow, Dave S. Knowlton, David C. Sharp

Faculty Publications

We look at the relationship between business simulations and the educational theory of generative learning using the framework developed by Wittrock (1974, 1990, 1992). Our findings reveal opportunities for generative learning that occur at all phases of the simulation process. Awareness of these opportunities prepares faculty to get the most from the strategic decision-making simulations. and may assist them in defining the contribution associated with their use. We suggest areas for additional research.

A Qualitative Modeling Method For Platform Design, Michael Van Wie, Robert B. Stone, Asli Sahin, Janis Terpenny, Fabrice Alizon, Steve Shooter, Timothy Simpson Dec 2005

A Qualitative Modeling Method For Platform Design, Michael Van Wie, Robert B. Stone, Asli Sahin, Janis Terpenny, Fabrice Alizon, Steve Shooter, Timothy Simpson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of a collection of related products sharing a common platform represents an important approach in modern product design. an ongoing problem is the application of design methods toward a limited set of evolving product data and archived design knowledge to search and explore alternative platform options. with the goal of maximizing the reuse of end item artifacts and supply chain elements, we propose a design modeling method using basic qualitative relationships among relevant performance, design, and noise parameters in the system of interest. by using qualitative models related to multiple levels of design data, the method provides a …

Amerindian Torture Revisited: Rituals Of Enslavement And Markers Of Servitude In Tropical America, Fernando Santos-Granero Dec 2005

Amerindian Torture Revisited: Rituals Of Enslavement And Markers Of Servitude In Tropical America, Fernando Santos-Granero

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Western fascination with the body and all things corporeal has permeated millennial anthropology, capturing the attention of anthropologists working in different parts of the world. In lowland South America, Seeger, da Matta, and Viveiros de Castro (1979) called attention, early on, to the Amerindian propensity to use the body as the main instrument to convey social and cosmological meanings. In a now famous essay entitled “Of Torture in Primitive Societies,” Pierre Clastres (1974) suggested that Amerindian initiation rituals—always entailing some kind of torture and bodily modification—were meant to mark initiates not only as adults but, above all, as fellow and equal …

Avian Hosts For West Nile Virus In St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, 2002, Nicholas Komar, Nicholas A. Panella, Stanley A. Langevin, Aaron C. Brault, Manuel Amador, Eric Edwards, Jennifer C. Owen

Faculty Publications

West Nile virus (WNV) infections in free-ranging birds were studied in Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, after a human encephalitis outbreak peaked there in July 2002. Seroprevalence in resident, free-ranging wild birds in one suburban site was 25% and 24% in August and October, respectively, indicating that most transmission had ceased by early August. Mortality rates, seroprevalence rates, host competence, and crude population estimates were used in mathematical models to predict actual infection rates, population impacts, and importance as amplifying hosts for several common passerine birds. Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) and house sparrow (Passer domesticus) were the principal amplifying hosts, …

A Sociological History Of Prison Privatization In The Contemporary United States, Donna Selman-Killingbeck Dec 2005

A Sociological History Of Prison Privatization In The Contemporary United States, Donna Selman-Killingbeck

Dissertations

This dissertation is framed by the radical criminological-theoretical perspective and utilizes the social constructionist method of analysis to examine the development of prison privatization in the United States. Central to this analysis is the question: How is it that, given the disastrous history of blatant attempts to blend capitalism and punishment, contemporary privatization of prisons not only emerged but continues to expand becoming a multinational incarceration industry? Three phases of privatization: emergence, maintenance and perpetuation, are illuminated in their political, economic and cultural contexts. Thestrategies and techniques, access to power, claims-making and managing counterclaims for example, of various stakeholders in …

People Into Ghosts: Chachi Death Rituals As Shape-Shifting, Istvan Praet Dec 2005

People Into Ghosts: Chachi Death Rituals As Shape-Shifting, Istvan Praet

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article deals with the corporeality of the dead in native South American societies. Focusing on the Chachi of Northwest Ecuador, I question whether the separation of the dead from the living is best analyzed in terms of the lack of a body. While relevant in most ordinary circumstances, the division between having or not having a body hampers ourcapacitytounderstandcrisissituations, especiallywhensomebodydies. I then turn to the particular role played by “ghosts” during funerary rituals, and the ways in which mourners “shift shape” into visible and physically present ghosts, thus assuming the forms of the dead. I suggest that similar kinds of metamorphoses …

Mutually Exclusive Relationships: Corporeality And Differentiation Of Persons In Yine (Piro) Social Cosmos, Minna Opas Dec 2005

Mutually Exclusive Relationships: Corporeality And Differentiation Of Persons In Yine (Piro) Social Cosmos, Minna Opas

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In Amazonia, body is a central organizing element of social life. Recent discussions in Amazonian anthropology show,on the one hand, the multiple ways in which the body acts in the formation of social relations, and, on the other, how social relations work in the formation of bodies. Bodies are relationally constituted in the diverse embodied processes through which Amazonian peoples form, maintain and regulate relations to each other. It is in this same manner that people also relate to, and are transformed into, different nonhuman persons. This article examines these dynamics of the body among the Yine (Piro) of Eastern …

Kindergarten Readiness: Using Age Or Skills In Assessing A Child’S Readiness, Leslie Barden Smith Dec 2005

Kindergarten Readiness: Using Age Or Skills In Assessing A Child’S Readiness, Leslie Barden Smith

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Currently, age is the primary indicator of kindergarten readiness. A concise list of readiness skills to guide parents and teachers when deciding if a child is ready for kindergarten is lacking. The literature reveals that older age kindergarten entrance is not a predictor of academic success, nor is age an accurate indicator of readiness. In this study, responses from approximately 22 kindergarten teachers to a readiness questionnaire identify and develop a succinct list of the skills these professionals view as most significant for kindergarten readiness. According to the teachers in this study, the ability to sit and listen for approximately …
