Operational sex ratio (OSR) has been traditionally thought of as a force imposing competition for mates rather than also a cue used to regulate the intrasexual competition individuals encounter. To assess whether eastern red-spotted newts, Notophthalmus viridescens, could appropriately compare OSRs, we quantified field responses to traps containing four males, a sexually receptive female, four males plus a female, or nothing as a control. Early in the breeding season, males from two populations chose competitive mating opportunities over no mating opportunity at all, but generally preferred less competitive mating prospects. Later in the breeding season, as the OSR of …

Dietary Restraint, Self-Efficacy, And Gender Differences In Weight Loss Program Participants, Amy Elizabeth Sheeley Jan 2005

Dietary Restraint, Self-Efficacy, And Gender Differences In Weight Loss Program Participants, Amy Elizabeth Sheeley

Open Access Dissertations

Rates of overweight and obesity continue to rise each year with serious associated health risks. This study was conducted to explore gender differences between behavior change variables for both dietary fat reduction and exercise behaviors in a weight loss population. This research also investigated relationships between these psychosocial behavior change variables. Over 300 overweight and obese men and women enrolled in weight loss programs in the greater Boston area completed self-administered surveys. The behavior change variables surveyed included validated Transtheoretical Model (TTM) measures of stage of change for dietary fat reduction, situational confidence and temptation for dietary fat reduction, as …

Functional And Structural Study Of The Protein Tyrosine Kinase Csk, As A Model System, Sungsoo Lee Jan 2005

Functional And Structural Study Of The Protein Tyrosine Kinase Csk, As A Model System, Sungsoo Lee

Open Access Dissertations

Protein phosphorylation, enzymatic transfer of γ-phosphate of adenosine triphosphate to a hydroxyl group of a recipient amino acid residue such as serine, threonine or tyrosine, is a fundamental control mechanism of cell signaling in eukaryotes. Most protein kinases, catalyzing protein phosphorylation, consist of multiple globular domains which play important roles in connecting signal transduction pathways. Due to their critical roles in cell signaling and the correlation between their activity and disease processes of the cell, many protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) are targets for inhibitor development. For the purposes of understanding their mechanisms in signal transduction and developing PTK inhibitors for …

Probing The Regulatory Mechanisms Of Protein Tyrosine Kinases, Using C-Terminal Src Kinase (Csk) As A Model System, Xiaofeng Lin Jan 2005

Probing The Regulatory Mechanisms Of Protein Tyrosine Kinases, Using C-Terminal Src Kinase (Csk) As A Model System, Xiaofeng Lin

Open Access Dissertations

Protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) are important signal transducers. Most PTKs have a catalytic domain, which carries out catalysis, and regulatory domains, which regulate their activity. Autophosphorylation, the Tyr phosphorylation in the activation loop, is also a key regulatory mechanism for most PTKs. In this study, I probed the regulatory mechanisms of PTKs using Csk as a model system. Csk has two regulatory domains, SH3 and SH2, and a catalytic domain. In this study, I probed how the regulatory domains modulate Csk activity. First, the regulatory domains were required for Csk full activity, yet not involved in the recognition of Src, …

Evolutionary Numerical Methods Applied To Minimum Weight Structural Design And Cardiac Mechanics, Arun Unnikrishnan Nair Jan 2005

Evolutionary Numerical Methods Applied To Minimum Weight Structural Design And Cardiac Mechanics, Arun Unnikrishnan Nair

Open Access Dissertations

In this thesis numerical methods combining evolutionary optimization algorithms and finite element analysis are developed and applied to problems in cardiac mechanics and structural optimization. In the first application finite element analysis is combined with a real encoded genetic algorithm to determine unknown material parameters in constitutive model for ventricular myocardium using an inverse approach. As a second application suppression of global instabilities in minimum-weight Michell structures is investigated. A real encoded genetic algorithm is combined with a finite element eigenvalue buckling analysis for suppressing global buckling associated with minimum-weight structures. A novel finite element based evolutionary algorithm is developed …

Sex Change In Crepidula Fornicata: Influence Of Environmental Factors On Reproductive Success And The Timing Of Sex Change, Dina A. Proestou Jan 2005

Sex Change In Crepidula Fornicata: Influence Of Environmental Factors On Reproductive Success And The Timing Of Sex Change, Dina A. Proestou

Open Access Dissertations

Many organisms experience a sex change at some point in their life cycle. In order for this life history strategy to be adaptive, lifetime reproductive success must be maximized. The size advantage hypothesis predicts a universal size at sex change for all individuals; however, for most species, size at sex change varies both across and within populations, indicating that the reproductive success of the first sex is influenced by external factors. The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of environmental variables on the sex, reproductive success, and timing of sex change of the protandrous sequential hermaphrodite, Crepidula …

Of Zombie Permits And Greenwash Renewal Strategies: Ten Years Of New York's So-Called "Environmental Benefit Permitting Strategy", Karl S. Coplan

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the CWA's provisions ensuring public participation in the permitting process and the history of EPA regulations implementing the public participation requirements. The article then examines the EBPS authorizing legislation, DEC's Technical Guidance concerning its implementation of the EBPS, and some instances of DEC's actual practice implementing the EBPS, and compares these procedures with the public participation requirements contemplated by both the CWA and New York State's own clean water implementing legislation, Environmental Conservation Law Article 17. The article concludes that the procedures adopted by the DEC are inconsistent with both the CWA's public participation requirements, as well …

Mechanical Properties Of The Intervertebral Disc As An Estimator Of Postmortem Interval, Jennifer Noelle Jackson Jan 2005

Mechanical Properties Of The Intervertebral Disc As An Estimator Of Postmortem Interval, Jennifer Noelle Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently, forensic scientists are only able to determine time since death (or postmortem interval) up to the first 60 hours. This is based largely on insect activity. Herein, it is proposed to use the degradation of the intervertebral disc (IVD) after death to determine a relationship between the mechanical properties of cadaveric tissue and time since death in order to extend the 60-hour window. To that end, 1 fresh human spine and 6 pig spines were each separated into sections (6 human and 48 pig), with each section having one intact disc. The sections were buried, unearthed, and cleaned, leaving …

Measurement Of Soil Respiration In Situ: Chamber Techniques, Philippe Rochette, Gordon L. Hutchinson Jan 2005

Measurement Of Soil Respiration In Situ: Chamber Techniques, Philippe Rochette, Gordon L. Hutchinson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil respiration is commonly estimated as the flux of CO2 emitted from the soil surface (Fc). It represents the sum of CO2 produced by root respiration and by heterotrophic decomposition of root exudates, soil organic matter, and plant litter. The influence of CO2 fixation by autotrophic soil microorganisms, as well as nonbiological reactions such as the chemical oxidation of organic molecules and the precipitation or dissolution of soil carbonates, is small in most situations (Suarez, 1999). Root respiration is largely regulated by the root biomass and the rate of photosynthate transfer from plant leaves and …

Adult Dispersal Of Ostrinia Nubilalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) And Its Implications For Resistance Management In Bt-Maize, J. A. Qureshi, L. L. Buschman, James E. Throne, S. B. Ramaswamy

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Dispersal of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner was examined by release and recapture of the dye marked adults and by capture of the feral adults in and around the large 50 ha center pivot irrigated fields of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) maize. Pheromone and black light traps were used to catch the adults. In 1999, 15 094 marked males and 7993 marked females were released, and in 2001, 13 942 marked males and 9977 marked females were released. In 1999, maximum mean recapture beyond the release point was 1.95 and 1.67% for males and females, but in 2001, the recapture …

In Vitro And In Vivo Characterization Of A Trans Excision-Splicing Ribozyme, Dana Ann Baum Jan 2005

In Vitro And In Vivo Characterization Of A Trans Excision-Splicing Ribozyme, Dana Ann Baum

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Group I introns are catalytic RNAs with the ability to splice out of RNA transcripts, often without the aid of proteins. These self-splicing introns have been reengineered to create ribozymes with the ability to catalyze reactions. One such ribozyme, derived from a Pneumocystis carinii group I intron, has been engineered to sequence specifically remove a targeted segment from within an RNA substrate, which is called the trans excision-splicing reaction. The two catalytic steps of the trans excision-splicing reaction occur at positions on the substrate known as the 5' and 3' splice sites. Strict sequence requirements at these sites could potentially limit …
