Real Time Rt-Pcr For Direct Detection Of Viable Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis In Chron's Disease Patients And Association Of Map Infection With Downregulation In Interferon-Gamma Receptor (Infg1) Gene In Crohn's Disease Patients, Mounir Chehtane Jan 2005

Real Time Rt-Pcr For Direct Detection Of Viable Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis In Chron's Disease Patients And Association Of Map Infection With Downregulation In Interferon-Gamma Receptor (Infg1) Gene In Crohn's Disease Patients, Mounir Chehtane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Association of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) with Crohn's disease (CD) and not with ulcerative colitis (UC), two forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), has been vigorously debated in recent years. This theory has been strengthened by recent culture of MAP from breast milk, intestinal tissue and Blood from patients with active Crohn's disease. Culture of MAP from clinical samples remained challenging due to the fastidious nature of MAP including its lack of cell wall in infected patients. The advent of real time PCR has proven to be significant in infectious disease diagnostics. In this study, real time reverse transcriptase …

Expression Of Hepatitis C Viral Non-Structural 3 Antigen In Transgenic Chloroplasts, Anubhuti Bhati Jan 2005

Expression Of Hepatitis C Viral Non-Structural 3 Antigen In Transgenic Chloroplasts, Anubhuti Bhati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hepatitis C viral infection is the major cause of acute hepatitis and chronic liver disease and remains the leading cause of liver transplants (NIH). An estimated 180 million people are infected globally (WHO). There is no vaccine available to prevent hepatitis C. The treatment with antiviral drugs is expensive, accompanied with various side effects and is limited only to those at risk of developing advanced liver disease. The treatment is also effective in only about 30% to 50% of treated patients and still a high percentage of patients are resistant to therapy. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the …

The Effects Of Ecotourism On Polar Bear Behavior, Gillian Eckhardt Jan 2005

The Effects Of Ecotourism On Polar Bear Behavior, Gillian Eckhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polar bears spend the majority of their lives on the sea ice, where they gain access to seals and mates. In western Hudson Bay, the sea ice melts for three to four months in the summer, and polar bears there are forced onto land. These bears live on their fat reserves for the duration of the iceless period, until temperatures get colder in the fall and freeze up begins. The aggregation of polar bears near Churchill, Manitoba during the ice free period has led to a thriving tourist industry, with a large influx of tourists visiting Churchill in the fall …

Expression Of Cholera Toxin B Subunit-Rotavirus Nsp4 Enterotoxin Fusion Protein In Transgenic Chloroplasts, Anila Kalluri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rotavirus, the major cause of life-threatening infantile gastroenteritis, is a member of the Reoviridae family and is considered to be the single most important cause of virus-based severe diarrheal illness in infants and young children particularly 6 months to 2 years of age in industrialized and developing countries. Infection in infants and young children is often accompanied by severe life threatening diarrhea, most commonly following primary infection. Diarrhea is the major cause of death among children around the world. Responsible for 4 to 6 million deaths per year according to the World Health Organization (WHO), diarrhea is especially dangerous for …

Site Preparation Methods For Restoration Of Non-Native Pasturelands To Native Upland Habitat, Krisann Joie Kosel Jan 2005

Site Preparation Methods For Restoration Of Non-Native Pasturelands To Native Upland Habitat, Krisann Joie Kosel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The flatwoods ecosystem of Florida has been heavily depleted over time but remains one of the most important systems to many threatened and endangered species. Areas that have been converted into non-native pastures may be restored to provide not only this invaluable ecosystem but also restore connectivity of the surrounding ecosystems. The pasture areas on The Disney Wilderness Preserve in central Florida were surveyed, and a conceptual plan for restoration was written in 1996. That same year a pilot study was developed to assess five methods for removing non-native pasture grasses. The treatments studied were single herbicide, single disc, multiple …

Withaferin-A: A Potential Anticancer Withanolide From Withania Somnifera (L.) Dun., Amrit Pal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) is a plant used in medicine from the time of Ayurveda, the ancient system of Indian medicine. The dried roots of the plant are used in the treatment of nervous and sexual disorders. From chemistry point of view, the drug contains group of biologically active constituents known as withanolides. The chemical structures of withanolides have been studied and they are widely distributed in family Solanacae. Withaferin-A is therapeutically active withanolide reported to be present in leaves. In animal studies, withaferin-A has shown significant anticancer activity. Majority of the anticancer drugs like Vinblastine, Vincristine, and Taxol have been …

Quantification Of Call Variations Between Sub-Regional Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Populations, Kory C. Russel Jan 2005

Quantification Of Call Variations Between Sub-Regional Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Populations, Kory C. Russel

Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses

The Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) has seen significant and accelerating declines in its overall population numbers in the past 100 years. This is primarily the result of habitat loss and population fragmentation, which has isolated the extremely territorial Florida Scrub Jay into smaller sub-regional populations. In many ways this is a catalyst for social evolution and divergence of the species. An early indicator of divergent evolution can be witnessed in the development of distinct call dialects. By recording the female hiccup calls of the three largest distinct sub-regional populations (Atlantic Coast sub-region, Ocala sub-region and the Lake …

Leaf Optical Responses To Light And Soil Nutrient Availability In Temperature Deciduous Trees, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas Jan 2005

Leaf Optical Responses To Light And Soil Nutrient Availability In Temperature Deciduous Trees, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas

Biology Faculty Publications

Leaf optical parameters influence light availability at the cellular, leaf, and canopy scale of integration. While recent studies have focused on leaf optical responses to acute plant stress, the effects of changes in plant resources on leaf optics remain poorly characterized. We examined leaf optical and anatomical responses of five temperate deciduous tree species to moderate changes in nutrient and light availability. Spectral reflectance in the visible waveband generally increased at high light, but decreased with increased nutrient availability. Patterns of both spectral reflectance and absorptance were primarily determined by chlorophyll concentration although carotenoid concentration was also influential. While most …

Community And Democracy: Syracuse Reflections, Richard E.D. Schwartz Jan 2005

Community And Democracy: Syracuse Reflections, Richard E.D. Schwartz

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

How does the American experience with democracy contribute to our understanding of the prospects for, and paths to, democracy worldwide?" Another half of the papers prepared for the Conference deal with the experience of other countries, many of them moving toward rule-of-law democracy. Taken together, they represent a sample of our present knowledge-and they suggest new directions for future research. Communities with certain qualities contribute to the development and sustaining of democracy. The qualities to which I refer include: mutual respect across lines of division and the creative composition of differences. At Syracuse, we saw two kinds of community: local …

The Reproductive Cycle Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraid Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang Jan 2005

The Reproductive Cycle Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraid Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang

Biological Sciences

The thorny skate (Amblyraja radiata) is a large species of skate that is endemic to the waters of the western north Atlantic in the Gulf of Maine. Because the biomass of thorny skates has recently declined below threshold levels mandated by the Sustainable Fisheries Act, commercial harvests from this region are prohibited. We have undertaken a comprehensive study to gain insight into the life history of this skate. The present study describes and characterizes the reproductive cycle of female and male thorny skates, based on monthly samples taken off the coast of New Hampshire, from May 2001 to May 2003. …

Age And Growth Estimates Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang Jan 2005

Age And Growth Estimates Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang

Biological Sciences

The northwest Atlantic population of thorny skates (Amblyraja radiata) inhabits an area that ranges from Greenland and Hudson Bay, Canada, to South Carolina. Despite such a wide range, very little is known about most aspects of the biology of this species. Recent stock assessment studies in the northeast United States indicate that the biomass of the thorny skate is below the threshold levels mandated by the Sustainable Fisheries Act. In order to gain insight into the life history of this skate, we estimated age and growth for thorny skates, using vertebral band counts from 224 individuals ranging in size from …

Habitat Trails . . . A Manual For Affordable Green Neighborhood Development, Community Design Center Jan 2005

Habitat Trails . . . A Manual For Affordable Green Neighborhood Development, Community Design Center

Community Design Center Project Reports

Habitat Trails is a green affordable neighborhood development consisting of 17 Habitat for Humanity homes. The site is designed as a sponge to work in accord with existing hydrological drainage, catchment, and recharge patterns. Stormwater runoff is retained and treated through a contiguous network of bioswales, infiltration trenches, stormwater gardens, sediment filter strips, and a constructed wet meadow. The integration of a treatment landscape with open space substitutes an ecologically-based stormwater management system for the expensive curb-gutter-pipe solution in civil infrastructure.

Microclimate Effects From Closing Abandoned Mines With Culvert Bat Gates, Robert H. King Jan 2005

Microclimate Effects From Closing Abandoned Mines With Culvert Bat Gates, Robert H. King

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Numerous bat species, including some threatened species, inhabit thousands of abandoned mines across the United States. Some of their bat habitat has been lost as mines are closed to reduce hazards to the public. Bat gates have been used to close some mines because they restrict public access while still allowing the bats to fly in and out. However, they are not appropriate for mines with trench portals. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposed using culverts in the trenches and closing the culverts with bat gates. BLM worked with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) to study the effects …
