Genre Across The Curriculum, Anne Herrington, Charles Moran Jan 2005

Genre Across The Curriculum, Anne Herrington, Charles Moran

All USU Press Publications

American first-year college writing courses operate without a powerful context: they are designed to teach academic writing, but what kind of academic writing? Which of the many particular discourses, and, within those discourses, which recurring social situations? Lacking a clear context to refer to, textbook authors inevitably privilege form. Genre across the Curriculum will function as a "good" textbook, one not for the student, but for the teacher, and one with an eye on the context of writing. Here you will find models of practice, descriptions written by teachers who have integrated the teaching of genre into their pedagogy in …

Risk-Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Atrazine In Drinking Water From Agricultural Activities And Policy Implications, Aklilu A. Tesfamichael, Arthur J. Caplan, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This study provides an improved methodology for investigating the trade‐offs between the health risks and economic benefits of using atrazine in the agricultural sector by incorporating public attitude to pesticide management in the analysis. Regression models are developed to predict finished water atrazine concentration in high‐risk community water supplies in the United States. The predicted finished water atrazine concentrations are then used in a health risk assessment. The computed health risks are compared with the total economic surplus in the U.S. corn market for different atrazine application rates using estimated demand and supply functions developed in this work. Analysis of …

Industrial Evolution In Response To Changes In The Demand For Traceability And Assurance: A Case Study Of Chilean Salmon Aquaculture, Tyler K. Olson, Keith Criddle Jan 2005

Industrial Evolution In Response To Changes In The Demand For Traceability And Assurance: A Case Study Of Chilean Salmon Aquaculture, Tyler K. Olson, Keith Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The structure and organization of industries evolves over time in response to changes in the price and availability of inputs, changes in the demand for outputs and output attributes, and changes in technology. The growing demand for traceability and assurance is a change in the demand for credence attributes. Firms that are able to organize to provide traceability and assurance at low cost will, ceteris paribus, have an advantage. In recent years, many segments of the food and agribusiness industry have become more concentrated through horizontal or vertical integration within firms or within associations of firms (cooperatives). This paper explores …

Optimal Discounting Of Benefits From Cleanup At Waste Sites, Kenneth S. Lyon, Frank Caliendo Jan 2005

Optimal Discounting Of Benefits From Cleanup At Waste Sites, Kenneth S. Lyon, Frank Caliendo

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper uses a general equilibrium optimal growth model to discuss the role of optimal discounting of future benefits from cleanup at high level toxic waste sites. Cleanup simultaneously generates two streams of benefits. One of these is directly from utility and the other is indirectly from the added productivity of workers. We note that the optimal discount rate is different for these two types of benefits. Along the optimal path, the former are discounted at the rate of time preference and the latter at the market rate of interest. We achieve this by identifying four components of the shadow …

Aggregate Measures Of Ecosystem Services: Can We Take The Pulse Of Nature?, Laura A. Meyerson, Jill Baron, Jerry M. Melillo, Robert J. Naiman, Robin I. O'Malley, Gordon Orians, Margaret A. Palmer, Alexander S. P. Pfaff, Steven W. Running, Osvaldo E. Sala Jan 2005

Aggregate Measures Of Ecosystem Services: Can We Take The Pulse Of Nature?, Laura A. Meyerson, Jill Baron, Jerry M. Melillo, Robert J. Naiman, Robin I. O'Malley, Gordon Orians, Margaret A. Palmer, Alexander S. P. Pfaff, Steven W. Running, Osvaldo E. Sala

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

National scale aggregate indicators of ecosystem services are useful for stimulating and supporting a broad public discussion about trends in the provision of these services. There are important considerations involved in producing an aggregate indicator, including whether the scientific and technological capacity exists, how to address varying perceptions of the societal importance of different services, and how to communicate information about these services to both decision makers and the general public. Although the challenges are formidable, they are not insurmountable. Quantification of ecosystem services and dissemination of information to decision makers and the public is critical for the responsible and …

Small-Scale Field Experiments Accurately Scale Up To Predict Density Dependence In Reef Fish Populations At Large Scales, Mark A. Steele, Graham E. Forrester Jan 2005

Small-Scale Field Experiments Accurately Scale Up To Predict Density Dependence In Reef Fish Populations At Large Scales, Mark A. Steele, Graham E. Forrester

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Field experiments provide rigorous tests of ecological hypotheses but are usually limited to small spatial scales. It is thus unclear whether these findings extrapolate to larger scales relevant to conservation and management. We show that the results of experiments detecting density-dependent mortality of reef fish on small habitat patches scale up to have similar effects on much larger entire reefs that are the size of small marine reserves and approach the scale at which some reef fisheries operate. We suggest that accurate scaling is due to the type of species interaction causing local density dependence and the fact that localized …

A New Model To Estimate Daily Energy Expenditure For Wintering Waterfowl, Richard A. Mckinney, Scott R. Mcwilliams Jan 2005

A New Model To Estimate Daily Energy Expenditure For Wintering Waterfowl, Richard A. Mckinney, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Current models to estimate daily energy expenditure (DEE) for free-living birds are limited to either those that use fixed thermoregulatory costs or those that more accurately estimate thermoregulatory costs, but require extensive and often logistically difficult measurements. Here, we propose a model based on basal metabolic rate (BMR), activity budgets, and site-specific energetic costs of thermoregulation that requires only simple measures of ambient temperature and wind speed to provide estimates of DEE. We use the model to calculate the DEE of Buffleheads (Bucephala albeola) wintering at six habitats that afford differing degrees of protection from exposure within Narragansett …

Habitat Selection And Home Range Size Of Ruffed Grouse In Rhode Island, Erik G. Endrulart, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Brian C. Tefft Jan 2005

Habitat Selection And Home Range Size Of Ruffed Grouse In Rhode Island, Erik G. Endrulart, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Brian C. Tefft

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Bonasa umbellus (Ruffed Grouse) are one of many wildlife species that require early successional forest and whose populations have declined as New England forests have matured. We studied habitat selection and home range size of Ruffed Grouse in oak-hickory forests in Rhode Island to determine the importance of different habitat types for grouse. Home range size did not significantly differ by age or gender (mean = 103 ± 24.91 ha). Habitat selection was assessed at two spatial scales: home range and study area scale. At the study area scale, grouse selected early successional forest, mixed deciduous-conifer stands, deciduous forest, and …

Seed And Seedling Ecology Of Acer Saccharum And Acer Platanoides: A Contrast Between Native And Exotic Congeners, Scott J. Meiners Jan 2005

Seed And Seedling Ecology Of Acer Saccharum And Acer Platanoides: A Contrast Between Native And Exotic Congeners, Scott J. Meiners

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The exotic tree, Acer platanoides, is increasing in forests of northeastern North America, largely within the range of its native congener, Acer saccharum. A combination of field and controlled experiments was used on seeds and seedlings of these congeners to determine species characteristics that may be contributing to these floristic changes. Acer platanoides experienced lower rates of seed predation than A. saccharum in field experiments. Differences in the dispersal and allocation characteristics of the two species were small and not likely to explain the relative success of A. platanoides. Greenhouse- grown seedlings of A. platanoides were much larger than those …

The Social Environment Affects Mate Guarding Behavior In Japanese Beetles, Popillia Japonica, Yoriko Saeki, Kipp C. Kruse, Paul Switzer Jan 2005

The Social Environment Affects Mate Guarding Behavior In Japanese Beetles, Popillia Japonica, Yoriko Saeki, Kipp C. Kruse, Paul Switzer

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The effect of the social environment on post-copulatory mate guarding duration in Japanese beetles, (Popillia japonica Newman), was examined in a laboratory experiment. The mate guarding durations of beetles in different sex ratios and densities were observed for 10 hours. Guarding duration was longer when females were larger, suggesting the presence of ‘cryptic’ male mate choice. Densities, but not sex ratio, affected the duration of guarding bouts, with males guarding for longer at higher densities. This result implies that males increase their guarding duration under conditions in which their female may be likely to be encountered by other males. The …

Reservoir Competence Of Native North American Birds For The Lyme Disease Spirochete, Borrelia Burgdorferi, Howard S. Ginsberg, P. A. Buckley, Maxon G. Balmforth, Elyes Zhioua, Shaibal Mitra, Francine G. Buckley

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Reservoir competence for the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, was tested for six species of native North American birds: American robin, gray catbird, brown thrasher, eastern towhee, song sparrow, and northern cardinal. Wild birds collected by mist netting on Fire Island, NY, were held in a field laboratory in cages over water and locally collected larval ticks were placed on the birds, harvested from the water after engorgement, and tested for infection by direct fluorescent-antibody staining after molting to the nymphal stage. American robins were competent reservoirs, infecting 16.1% of larvae applied to wild-caught birds, compared with 0% of …

Woodland Type And Spatial Distribution Of Nymphal Ixodes Scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae), Howard S. Ginsberg, Elyes Zhioua, Shaibal Mitra, James Fischer, P. A. Buckley, Frank Verret, H. Brian Underwood, Francine G. Buckley Jan 2005

Woodland Type And Spatial Distribution Of Nymphal Ixodes Scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae), Howard S. Ginsberg, Elyes Zhioua, Shaibal Mitra, James Fischer, P. A. Buckley, Frank Verret, H. Brian Underwood, Francine G. Buckley

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Spatial distribution patterns of black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, in deciduous and coniferous woodlands were studied by sampling ticks in different woodland types and at sites from which deer had been excluded and by quantifying movement patterns of tick host animals (mammals and birds) at the Lighthouse Tract, Fire Island, NY, from 1994 to 2000. Densities of nymphal ticks were greater in deciduous than coniferous woods in 3 of 7 yr. Only engorged ticks survived the winter, and overwintering survival of engorged larvae in experimental enclosures did not differ between deciduous and coniferous woods. Nymphs were not always most abundant …

Uninformed Consent, Edwidge Jourdain Thomas Anp, Dr.Np Jan 2005

Uninformed Consent, Edwidge Jourdain Thomas Anp, Dr.Np

Journal of Health Ethics

Patients seek the advice of health care providers regarding treatment options and protocols. When there is a condition with several treatment alternatives, patients generally rely on their health care providers to explore all the options available and guide them on the evidence-based treatment that would ensure the best outcome. This simple premise is complicated by the fact that there are often not one, but a range of treatments with differing interpretations of the best outcome. In addition, failure to ensure that patients have adequate comprehension of treatment options and complications often result in negative treatment outcomes. Cases where the treatment …

A Theoretical Approach To Assessing Annual Energy Balance In Gray Whales (Eschrichtius Robustus), Nathalie Lucie Elizabeth Greenwald Jan 2005

A Theoretical Approach To Assessing Annual Energy Balance In Gray Whales (Eschrichtius Robustus), Nathalie Lucie Elizabeth Greenwald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While direct measurements of energetic demands are nearly impossible to collect on large cetaceans, comprehensive bioenergetic models can give insights on such parameters by combining physiological and ecological knowledge. This model was developed to estimate necessary food intake of gray whales, Eschrichtius robustus, of the Eastern North Pacific stock. Field Metabolic Rates (FMR) for gray whales were first estimated based on various assumptions (e.g. volumetric representation of gray whales, extent of their feeding season, and blubber depth distribution) using morphometric data, energetic costs, and food assimilation according to age and gender specific requirements. Food intake rates for gray whales of …

Receptor Mediated Oral Delivery Of Bioencapsulated Green Fluorescent Protein Expressed In Transgenic Chloroplasts, Arati Limaye Jan 2005

Receptor Mediated Oral Delivery Of Bioencapsulated Green Fluorescent Protein Expressed In Transgenic Chloroplasts, Arati Limaye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The skyrocketing costs of prescription medicine in developed countries and their lack of availability in developing countries are the most challenging problems of human health. Primary reasons for such high cost are fermentation-based production, expensive purification methods, the need for low temperature storage and transportation and the delivery through sterile injections. Most of these expenses could be minimized or eliminated when therapeutic proteins are expressed and orally delivered via plant cells. Chloroplasts have the machinery to fold complex and biologically active eukaryotic proteins in the soluble chloroplast stromal compartment. Protein expression through chloroplast transformation system offers a number of advantages …
