Dynamic Equations On Changing Time Scales: Dynamics Of Given Logistic Problems, Parameterization, And Convergence Of Solutions, Kelli J. Hall Jan 2005

Dynamic Equations On Changing Time Scales: Dynamics Of Given Logistic Problems, Parameterization, And Convergence Of Solutions, Kelli J. Hall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis we use the theory of dynamic equations on time scales to understand the changes in dynamics between difference and differen- tial equations by parameterizing the underlying domains. To illustrate where and how these changes occur, we then construct a bifurcation diagram for a simple family of dynamic equations. However, these results are only true if we can move continuously through our domains, i.e, the time scales. In the last part of this thesis, we define what it means to have a convergent sequence of time scales. Then we use this definition to prove that the limit …

Woman At War: How I Won My Battle With Domestic Violence, But Continue To Fight The War, Krista R. Holcomb Jan 2005

Woman At War: How I Won My Battle With Domestic Violence, But Continue To Fight The War, Krista R. Holcomb

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Woman at War: How I Won My Battle Against Domestic Violence But Continue to Fight the War, is a depiction of my experience in an abusive relationship. The project presents the initial experiences that draw the victim to her future abuser, the forming of a bond between the couple, the feelings of fear and desperation that overwhelm and often paralyze the victim in the midst of abuse, and the final escape and eventual advocacy for other victims. While most of the project is presented as personal narrative, letters, journal entries, and lists appear in order to show the mindset of …

A Study Of The Importance And Implementation Of National Pre-Kindergarten Standards For Language And Literacy As Perceived By West Virginia Directors Of Early Childhood Centers, Judaea Hodge

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examined the difference between levels of importance and implementation for the National Pre-Kindergarten Standards for Language and Literacy (NPKSLL) in four-year-old programs as perceived by West Virginia licensed pre- kindergarten programs directors and the differences based on director’s education level, years of experience, years in present position, program type and size, and the number of four year olds in the program. To examine this relationship, The Early Childhood Language and Literacy Survey (ECELLS) was designed based on the NPKSLL five goals: listening (Goal 1), complex speech (Goal 2), print awareness (Goal 3), story structure (Goal 4) and beginning …

Effects Of Tamoxifen On Mitochondrial Nos Activity: Alteration In The Intramitochondrial Ca2+ Homeostasis, Sandeep S. Joshi Jan 2005

Effects Of Tamoxifen On Mitochondrial Nos Activity: Alteration In The Intramitochondrial Ca2+ Homeostasis, Sandeep S. Joshi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Tamoxifen (Tam) is an anticancer drug that induces oxidative stress and apoptosis via mitochondria- and nitric oxide (NO)-dependent pathways. Here, we report that therapeutic concentrations of Tam stimulate the mitochondrial NO synthase (mtNOS) activity of isolated rat liver mitochondria by increasing the intramitochondrial ionized Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]m). Tam decreases transmembrane potential (∆ψ) due to increased [Ca2+]m that neutralizes the negative charges of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Thus, the present study reports a novel mechanism for the widely used anti- caner drug, Tam.

Assessing Cultural And Ecological Variation In Ethnobiological Research: The Importance Of Gender, Jeanine M. Pfeiffer Jan 2005

Assessing Cultural And Ecological Variation In Ethnobiological Research: The Importance Of Gender, Jeanine M. Pfeiffer

Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies

Contending that a significant portion of current ethnobiological research continues to overlook cultural variation in traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and practice, this paper explores the potential impacts of gender-imbalanced research on data collection, hypothesis testing, and the formulation and application of ethnobiological inventories and theories. A multidisciplinary review of over 220 studies addresses commonly held stereotypes underlying gender-imbalanced field research and demonstrates the need for more inclusive, finely-tuned studies which disaggregate indigenous knowledge and practice by gender. The paper outlines factors underlying gender-based spatial and temporal variation in ecosystem exposure and traditional ecological knowledge in rural societies worldwide, and discusses …

The Functions Of Transaction Costs: Rethinking Transaction Cost Minimization In A World Of Friction, David M. Driesen, Shubha Ghosh Jan 2005

The Functions Of Transaction Costs: Rethinking Transaction Cost Minimization In A World Of Friction, David M. Driesen, Shubha Ghosh

College of Law - Faculty Scholarship

This article critically examines the goal of minimizing transaction costs, including the costs of legal decision-making. This goal permeates the law and economics literature and has profoundly influenced public policy. While most transaction cost scholarship has focused upon private law, the minimization goal has strongly influenced public law, where it has contributed to a variety of legal changes aimed at reducing public transaction costs, often through privatization.

We argue that transaction costs purchase corollary benefits. They frequently enable those engaging in transactions to obtain information needed to correct for information asymmetries or inadequate information. They perform the functions of facilitating …

Grounding Normative Assertions: Arthur Leff's Still Irrefutable, But Incomplete, "Sez Who?" Critique, Samuel W. Calhoun Jan 2005

Grounding Normative Assertions: Arthur Leff's Still Irrefutable, But Incomplete, "Sez Who?" Critique, Samuel W. Calhoun

Scholarly Articles

The late Professor Arthur Leff believed that standard methods for grounding normative assertions fail to provide a solid foundation for moral judgment because none provides a satisfactory answer to what Leff called the grand 'sez who?' - a universal taunt by which a skeptic may challenge the standing/competency of the speaker to make authoritative moral assessments. Leff argued that as a matter of logic no system of morals premised in mankind alone ever could withstand the taunt. His provocative conclusion was that the only unchallengeable response to the grand 'sez who?' is God sez.

This Article demonstrates the continued relevance …

The 19th Century Excavation Of Kent's Cavern, England, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg Jan 2005

The 19th Century Excavation Of Kent's Cavern, England, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Between 1858 and 1880, William Pengelly developed revolutionary new techniques for the archeological and paleontological excavation of cave deposits. His work at Brixham Cave and Kent’s Cavern, England, yielded tens of thousands of specimens from the mid-Pleistocene to the Holocene, settled the intellectual debate over the co-existence of humans and extinct mammals, and accumulated an unparalleled resource for continued study. Although the Brixham Cave work was thoroughly summarized in print, Pengelly never published the plans of his much more thorough and extensive excavations at Kent’s Cavern. Here we present a reconstructed plan of the Pengelly excavations that we hope will …

When Children Have Children: Teenage Pregnancy, Atsuko Kawamata, Rodney Roundtree Jan 2005

When Children Have Children: Teenage Pregnancy, Atsuko Kawamata, Rodney Roundtree

Perspectives In Learning

Because teenage pregnancy affects so many people, it is receiving a great deal of attention in the United States as well as in other leading nations. Teaching young people that sex before marriage is not acceptable does not prevent pregnancy. Recognizing that teen’s sexual behavior is a crucial part of their development will lead to honest and accurate information about sex. This will help teens express their sexuality in safe and healthy way. Therefore, prevention strategies should be created that address the needs of sexually active teens. Males should also be included in prevention strategies. Young males are often overlooked …

Report Of A Novel Biological Association For Paracrias Huberi Gumovsky (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) With Redescription Of The Female And Description Of The Unknown Male, M. A. Metz, M. W. Gates, M. E. Schauff

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

The female of Paracrias huberi Gumovsky (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is redescribed and the previously unknown male described from material collected by George B. Vogt near Plummers Island, Maryland. The species is diagnosed and placed within the current phylogenetic concept for the genus Paracrias. Collection records indicate this species was reared from Homoeolabus analis Illiger (Coleoptera: Attelabidae), which is a leaf-rolling herbivore of Quercus spp. and Castanea spp. (Fagales: Fagaceae), thus expanding the potential host guild range of the genus Paracrias and the known biology of the species. In addition, these records report an association with Q. prinus L., a species …

Facial Temperature As A Measure Of Mental Workload, Hans J.A. Veltman, Wouter W.K. Vos Jan 2005

Facial Temperature As A Measure Of Mental Workload, Hans J.A. Veltman, Wouter W.K. Vos

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

We conducted an experiment to explore the relation between facial temperature and mental effort. Participants had to perform mentally demanding tasks while their face was captured with an infrared camera. The temperature of the nose decreased during these tasks and increased during the successive rest periods. Other parts of the face did not change due to mental effort. The advantage of this workload measure is that it can provide objective and real-time information about mental effort of operators without attaching sensors to an operator. This measure can be used to measure the workload of operators in relatively stable environmental conditions …

Integration Of Nickel Monosilicide (Nisi) Into An Rit Smfl Nmos Device, Phu Do Jan 2005

Integration Of Nickel Monosilicide (Nisi) Into An Rit Smfl Nmos Device, Phu Do

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

A nickel silicidation process has been developed for the Semiconductor & Microsystems Fabrication Laboratory (SM FL) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). NISI and Ni2Si were obtained in doped source/drain and polysilicon gate regions respectively at rapid thermal annealing (RTA) condition of 500°C for 60 seconds. The sheet resistance of nickel silicide in both regions was measured to be 0.45Ω/o — 0.5Ω/o. Nickel silicide was also integrated into an RIT NMOSFET process where silicide was formed over the S/D and polysilicon gate regions. Rutherford Backscatter and x-ray diffraction data showed the formation of NiSi phase in the S/D …

Development Of Macroporous Silicon For Bio-Chemical Sensing Applications, Tiffany M. Hoover Jan 2005

Development Of Macroporous Silicon For Bio-Chemical Sensing Applications, Tiffany M. Hoover

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Macroporous silicon bio-chemical sensing devices have been developed, fabricated and tested. The porous silicon walls were lined with oxide and aluminum electrodes were placed on either side of the porous silicon membrane. These electrodes were used to measure capacitive changes resulting from vapor/fluidic interactions with the oxide-coated porous silicon membrane.

For thick flow-through membrane formation, the maximum etch time investigated during the porous silicon-forming anodization process, using an electrolyte consisting of hydrofluoric acid and dimethylformamide was an 8 hour period with an electrolyte refresh halfway through the process. The pore dimensions measured after this process were approximately 67 μm …

Assessment For Learning: Using Statewide Literacy And Numeracy Tests As Diagnostic Tools, Philip Holmes-Smith Jan 2005

Assessment For Learning: Using Statewide Literacy And Numeracy Tests As Diagnostic Tools, Philip Holmes-Smith

2005 - Using data to support learning

Assessment of learning dominates assessment efforts around the world, and systems, whether intentionally or unintentionally, typically portray such programs as the best means of raising the standards of learning. At the classroom level, such programs are rarely appreciated and most teachers have little faith in either the reliability or validity of such State-mandated tests. While it is clear that school administrators take the results of such programs very seriously, few classroom teachers give any more than cursory attention to the results for their own class. This is a shame for a number of reasons. First and foremost amongst these reasons is …

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu Jan 2005

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu

English

This essay looks at the values attributed or denied to "culture" (medical culture, history, Southeast Asian refugees, Asian American cultural citizenship) in the care surrounding a Hmong child diagnosed with spirit loss, according to Hmong interpretation, or epilepsy, as defined by Western medicine. In my reading of Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures, medical, colonial, and authorial knowledge often converge in devastating ways, linking the seemingly disparate discourses of war, refugee medicine, and the model minority through colonial representations. I also look at the …
