Yos1p Is A Novel Subunit Of The Yip1p–Yif1p Complex And Is Required For Transport Between The Endoplasmic Reticulum And The Golgi Complex, Matthew Heidtman, Catherine Z. Chen, Ruth N. Collins, Charles Barlowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

Yeast Yip1p is a member of a conserved family of transmembrane proteins that interact with Rab GTPases. Previous studies also have indicated a role for Yip1p in the biogenesis of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-derived COPII transport vesicles. In this report, we describe the identification and characterization of the uncharacterized open reading frame YER074W-A as a novel multicopy suppressor of the thermosensitive yip1-4 strain. We have termed this gene Yip One Suppressor 1 (YOS1). Yos1p is essential for growth and for function of the secretory pathway; depletion or inactivation of Yos1p blocks transport between the ER and …

Computer-Simulation-Assisted Lean Manufacturing Training, Luoding Wang Jan 2005

Computer-Simulation-Assisted Lean Manufacturing Training, Luoding Wang

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis assesses the potential of using computer simulation to aid existing lean manufacturing training methods such as lecture and live simulation. An investigation of this possibility was carried out in conjunction with UMEP's Lean 101 class. In the study, two experimental computer simulation models demonstrating the push and pull production scenarios were constructed using ProModel software. Simulation models were equipped with a Visual Basic interface to aid trainees to manipulate the model via ActiveX. Constructed computer simulation was compared with live simulation to answer these research questions: 1. Was computer simulation able to teach additional lean concepts not covered …

The Kiodynamic Theory Of Tort, Christopher P. Guzelian Jan 2005

The Kiodynamic Theory Of Tort, Christopher P. Guzelian

Law and Economics Papers

Increasingly, commentators complain of two major deficiencies in modern tort law: (1) that liability concepts such as "negligence" or "duty" are so vacuously defined as to permit inadvertent subjectivity and error to hinder proper case adjudication; (2) that tort is too slow in recognizing newly discovered risks and properly compensating nascent classes of injury. We accordingly report on the Kiodynamic Theory, an emerging philosophy that overcomes these twin deficiencies and sharpens understanding of poorly articulated tort intuitions. Kiodynamics contends causation is the cornerstone of tort, and that all risks are, at core, causal propositions. Contrary to its many everyday definitions, …

Exploiting Bounds In Operations Research And Artificial Intelligence, Sharlee Climer, Weixiong Zhang Jan 2005

Exploiting Bounds In Operations Research And Artificial Intelligence, Sharlee Climer, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Combinatorial optimization problems are ubiquitous in scientific research, engineering, and even our daily lives. A major research focus in developing combinatorial search algorithms has been on the attainment of efficient methods for deriving tight lower and upper bounds. These bounds restrict the search space of combinatorial optimization problems and facilitate the computa-tion of what might otherwise be intractable problems. In this paper, we survey the history of the use of bounds in both AI and OR. While research has been extensive in both domains, until very recently it has been too narrowly focused and has overlooked great opportunities to exploit …

Factors Affecting Profitability Of The Cow-Calf Enterprise In The Northern Great Plains, Barry H. Dunn, Dick Pruitt, Edward Hamilton, Duane Griffith Jan 2005

Factors Affecting Profitability Of The Cow-Calf Enterprise In The Northern Great Plains, Barry H. Dunn, Dick Pruitt, Edward Hamilton, Duane Griffith

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

One hundred and forty eight privately owned and operated cow-calf enterprises were surveyed for their production and financial performance measures and the results analyzed for factors that affected profitability. The results of these analyzes indicate that for cow-calf enterprises in the Northern Great Plains, high levels of profit are a function of lower than average investment, above average reproductive performance, lower than average total expenses, and above average market prices for calves produced. Neither high nor low levels of other biological production, geographical region, size of operation, or year were factors that explained differences in profitability. Profitability measured as Return …

Developing An Anthropology Curriculum For High School: A Case Study From Durant High School, Hillsborough County, Florida, Kory Mcneil Bennett Jan 2005

Developing An Anthropology Curriculum For High School: A Case Study From Durant High School, Hillsborough County, Florida, Kory Mcneil Bennett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It has become increasingly apparent that anthropology has much to offer when it comes to educating our youth. This is true for all grade levels, kindergarten through senior level studies in high school. Here, this idea will be explored further by focusing on the students of Durant High School (DHS) of Plant City, Florida.

This project was designed to explore the idea of combining widely accepted pedagogical theories (Gardner 1983, 1993, 1999; Geraci 2000; Silver, Strong and Perini 1997) with anthropological theory and methods in order to devise effective curricula for high school archaeology and other anthropology courses. More essentially, …

Mapping The Ρ1 Gabac Receptor Agonist Binding Pocket, Anna Sedelnikova, Craig D. Smith, Stanislav O. Zakharkin, Delores Davis, David S. Weiss, Yongchang Chang

Translational Neuroscience

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. The GABA receptor type C (GABAC) is a ligand-gated ion channel with pharmacological properties distinct from the GABAA receptor. To date, only three binding domains in the recombinant ρ1 GABAC receptor have been recognized among six potential regions. In this report, using the substituted cysteine accessibility method, we scanned three potential regions previously unexplored in the ρ1 GABAC receptor, corresponding to the binding loops A, E, and F in the structural model for ligand-gated ion channels. The cysteine accessibility scanning and …

Human Rights, Jack Donnelly Jan 2005

Human Rights, Jack Donnelly

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Human rights are, literally, the rights we have simply because we are human. They are equal rights: one either is or is not a human being, and thus has exactly the same human rights as every other human being. They are inalienable rights: one cannot stop being a human being, and therefore cannot lose one's human rights, no matter how horribly one behaves nor how barbarously one is treated. Human rights are also universal rights, held by every human being, everywhere. This chapter offers a conceptual analysis of human rights, a brief account of their historical evolution, and an introduction …

Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Career Development Strategy, Martha J. Sutton Jan 2005

Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Career Development Strategy, Martha J. Sutton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goals of the present study were to 1.) develop a model of career related factors that could be related to organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB); and 2.) determine if the proposed relationships between the career focused variables and OCB differed across rating source. A total of 262 volunteers from a Corporation and University completed a survey in either online or by paper and pencil that included demographics and measures of: job involvement, career motivation, occupational commitment, perceptions of career plateau, career stage, and OCB. Ratings of OCB were obtained from approximately 195 participant supervisors and/or coworkers.

Correlational and multiple regression …
