Environmental Tribalism, Douglas A. Kysar, James Salzman Jan 2005

Environmental Tribalism, Douglas A. Kysar, James Salzman

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Recent writings by Dan Farber and J.B. Ruhl have put forward a strong case for "eco-pragmatic" and "radical middle" approaches to environmental policymaking. Rather than debate the merits of such an approach, in this Article we examine whether eco-pragmatic policy development is likely in practice and where it might occur, given the tribal nature of public environmental advocacy. We use the remarkably polarized reaction to Bjorn Lomborg's book, "The Skeptical Environmentalist," as a vehicle to explore the seemingly fundamental divide that exists between warring parties within the environmental law and policy communities. By offering a more complete understanding of why …

The Nuclear Localization Of The Arabidopsis Transcription Factor Tip Is Blocked By Its Interaction With The Coat Protein Of Turnip Crinkle Virus, Tao Ren, Feng Qu, Thomas Jack Morris Jan 2005

The Nuclear Localization Of The Arabidopsis Transcription Factor Tip Is Blocked By Its Interaction With The Coat Protein Of Turnip Crinkle Virus, Tao Ren, Feng Qu, Thomas Jack Morris

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

We have previously reported that TIP, an Arabidopsis protein, interacts with the coat protein (CP) of Turnip crinkle virus (TCV) in yeast cells and that this interaction correlated with the resistance response in the TCV-resistant Arabidopsis ecotype Dijon-17. TIP was also able to activate transcription of reporter genes in yeast cells, suggesting that it is likely a transcription factor. We have now verified the physical interaction between TIP and TCV CP in vitro and showed that CP mutants unable to interact with TIP in yeast cells bind TIP with much lower affinity in vitro. Secondly, we have performed gel shift …

Fractionation Of Cell Mixtures Using Acoustic And Laminar Flow Fields, Manoj Kumar, Donald L. Feke, Joanne M. Belovich Jan 2005

Fractionation Of Cell Mixtures Using Acoustic And Laminar Flow Fields, Manoj Kumar, Donald L. Feke, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A fractionation method applicable to different populations of cells in a suspension is reported. The separation was accomplished by subjecting the suspension to a resonant ultrasonic field and a laminar flow field propagating in orthogonal directions within a thin, rectangular chamber. Steady, laminar flow transports the cell suspension along the chamber, while the ultrasonic field causes the suspended cells to migrate to the mid-plane of the chamber at rates related to their size and physical properties. A thin flow splitter positioned near the outlet divides the effluent cell suspension into two product streams, thereby allowing cells that respond faster to …

Disturbance Of Eelgrass Zostera Marina By Commercial Mussel Mytilus Edulis Harvesting In Maine: Dragging Impacts And Habitat Recovery, Hilary A. Neckles, Frederick T. Short, Seth Barker, Blaine S. Kopp Jan 2005

Disturbance Of Eelgrass Zostera Marina By Commercial Mussel Mytilus Edulis Harvesting In Maine: Dragging Impacts And Habitat Recovery, Hilary A. Neckles, Frederick T. Short, Seth Barker, Blaine S. Kopp

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

We studied the effects of commercial harvest of blue mussels Mytilus edulis on eelgrass Zostera marina L. in Maquoit Bay, Maine, USA, at a hierarchy of scales. We used aerial photography, underwater video, and eelgrass population- and shoot-based measurements to quantify dragging impacts within 4 sites that had been disturbed at different times over an approximate 7 yr interval, and to project eelgrass meadow recovery rates. Dragging had disturbed 10% of the eelgrass cover in Maquoit Bay, with dragged sites ranging from 3.4 to 31.8 ha in size. Dragging removed above- and belowground plant material from the majority of the …
