Salmon Restructuring: Changing Alaska's Salmon Harvesting System: What Are The Challenges?, Gunnar Knapp, Fran Ulmer Apr 2005

Salmon Restructuring: Changing Alaska's Salmon Harvesting System: What Are The Challenges?, Gunnar Knapp, Fran Ulmer

ISER Reports

The Chignik fishing co-op is a cautionary tale about why restructuring in Alaska’s salmon fisheries is so hard and so controversial—and why it’s unlikely to happen until Alaskans clarify their goals for the fisheries and establish ways to achieve those goals. It won’t be easy to make changes in Alaska’s salmon harvesting system. Not everyone will benefit; some people could end up worse off. But the costs of doing nothing are also high. Thousands of Alaskans have already seen severe losses in fishing income and in boat and permit values, and many have had to quit fishing for salmon. Salmon …

Program Evaluation: Rose Urban Rural Teacher Training 2005 (Amended), Rosyland Frazier, Williamson Mcdiarmid

ISER Reports

Based on successful experiences in the Student Exchange component of the Rose Urban- Rural Exchange, the Alaska Humanities Forum developed Teacher Training to give urban teachers hands-on experience in rural Alaska Native culture. In 2002, the forum began this summer program for teachers, sending middle- and high-school teachers to Alaska Native culture and spirit camps in rural Alaska. At these camps, urban teachers are exposed to Native arts and crafts, history, subsistence lifestyle, language, and dance. Also at these camps, Alaska Native elders pass on their stories and culture to young people. Teachers go through an orientation before they leave …

Nanotribological Characterization Of Dynamic Surfaces, Sudeep Prabhakar Ingole Apr 2005

Nanotribological Characterization Of Dynamic Surfaces, Sudeep Prabhakar Ingole

Engineering

This dissertation research includes three fundamental areas: utilizing an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the nanomechanical and tribological properties, to understand friction and wear at nanometer length, and to study wear mechanisms of boride coatings for biological applications. This was the first time that an AFM was used to study the nanomechanical and tribological properties and the performance of the materials. The AFM enables detailed investigation of the wear modes at multi-length scales as well as the surface mechanical properties. Surface analysis using an AFM included the surface texture, profile of indents, wear tracks, and wear scars. The friction …

Soil Nitrogen Transformations And Retention During A Deciduous To Coniferous Successional Transition, Richard E. Brenner Apr 2005

Soil Nitrogen Transformations And Retention During A Deciduous To Coniferous Successional Transition, Richard E. Brenner

Biological Sciences

The mineralization, retention and movement of soil nitrogen (N) was investigated in forest types which encompass one of the most dramatic plant successional transitions in the boreal forest---the shift from deciduous, mid-succession, stands of balsam poplar (Poputus balsamifera) to coniferous, late-succession, stands of white spruce (Picea glauca). Nitrogen is an essential nutrient that often limits plant productivity in the boreal forest. Nitrogen uptake by plants is constrained by the activity of soil microbes and their associated exoenzymes which depolymerize (break down) organic molecules and release forms of N that are useable by plants (e.g., amino acids, ammonium and nitrate). The …

Vegetation-Climate Interactions Along A Transition From Tundra To Boreal Forest In Alaska, Catharine Copass Thompson Apr 2005

Vegetation-Climate Interactions Along A Transition From Tundra To Boreal Forest In Alaska, Catharine Copass Thompson

Biological Sciences

The climate of the Alaskan Arctic is warming more rapidly than at any time in the last 400 years. Climate changes of the magnitude occurring in high latitudes have the potential to alter both the structure and function of arctic ecosystems. Structural responses reflect changes in community composition, which may also influence ecosystem function. Functional responses change the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients. We examined the structural and functional interactions between vegetation and climate across a gradient of vegetation types from arctic tundra to boreal forest. Canopy complexity combines vegetation structural properties such as biomass, cover, height, leaf area …

Export Of Carbon, Nitrogen And Major Solutes From A Boreal Forest Watershed: The Influence Of Fire And Permafrost, Kevin Christopher Petrone Apr 2005

Export Of Carbon, Nitrogen And Major Solutes From A Boreal Forest Watershed: The Influence Of Fire And Permafrost, Kevin Christopher Petrone

Biological Sciences

Detailed observations of stream, soil, and groundwater chemistry were used to determine the role of fire, permafrost and snowmelt processes on the fluxes of carbon, nitrogen and major solutes from interior Alaskan catchments. We examined an experimentally burned watershed and two reference watersheds that differ in permafrost coverage (high, 53%; medium-burn, 18%; and low, 4%) during the FROSTFIRE prescribed burn in July 1999. The fire elevated stream nitrate concentrations for a short period during the first post-fire storm, but nitrate declined thereafter, suggesting that less severe fires that leave an intact riparian zone may have only a short-term effect on …

The Jurisprudential Foundation Of Law, Especially International Law: The Basis For True Progess & Reform, Morse Tan Apr 2005

The Jurisprudential Foundation Of Law, Especially International Law: The Basis For True Progess & Reform, Morse Tan

ExpressO

This essay makes a unique case for the existence of justice, higher law and virtue by drawing on classic thinkers from both East and West. It asserts that no better jurisprudential foundation can be found. The need for this foundation emerges more clearly in the international context, but it applies to all legal systems.

After introducing the topic, explaining the relevance of this jurisprudence, responding to objections, and critiquing competing approaches, this essay presents pertinent sources from the East. Well-regarded in the East but less known to the West, writers such as Mencius, Tao, Hsuntze, and the Neo Confucianists from …

The Anchor, Volume 118.22: April 15, 2005, Hope College

The Anchor: 2005

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Use Of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy To Study The Transport Of Biomacromolecules In A Macroporous Support, Anuradha Subramanian, Jennifer Hommerding Apr 2005

The Use Of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy To Study The Transport Of Biomacromolecules In A Macroporous Support, Anuradha Subramanian, Jennifer Hommerding

Papers in Biotechnology

Large-pore materials or supports resembling polymer conduits are used as packing material in chromatographic operations. Our ongoing research has shown that, when modified with peptides or ligands, chitosan beads that are 800 m in diameter and have 3.5% solids can be used as matrices in bioseparations. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the transport properties of biomolecules in the modified chitosan beaded matrices. Batch uptake experiments with fluorescently tagged pure human IgG, human IgA and human IgM were conducted to visualize the distribution of binding sites throughout the bead as well as to evaluate restrictions to diffusion, …
