January: Search Based On Social Insect Behavior, Peter C. Lamborn Apr 2005

January: Search Based On Social Insect Behavior, Peter C. Lamborn

Theses and Dissertations

January is a group of interacting stateless model checkers. Each agent functions on a processor located on a super computer or a network of workstations (NOW). The agent's search pattern is a semi-random walk based on the behavior of the grey field slug (Agriolimax reticulatus), the house fly (Musca domestica), and the black ant (Lassius niger). The agents communicate to lessen the amount of duplicate work being done. Every algorithm has a memory threshold above which they search efficiently. This threshold varies not only by model but also by algorithm. Janaury's threshold is lower than the thresholds of other algorithms …

The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the Wooster Voice was published on April 15 of 2005, and it is eight pages long. Seven members of the security team were let go during the re-hiring and reorganization process. The large budget cuts to higher education led to a protest on the Columbus state lawn last Tuesday. The candidates for the Student Government Association spots are given on page two. This years room draw was surprisingly a success. The work of Professor Bridget Milligan is on display in the college's art museum. Lollapalooza will be held in Chicago on July 23 and 24. The Jazz …

Through Their Eyes: Buffalo Bill's Wild West As A Drawing Table For American Identity, Katherine White '05 Apr 2005

Through Their Eyes: Buffalo Bill's Wild West As A Drawing Table For American Identity, Katherine White '05

Honors Projects, History

For the last quarter of the 19th century, in places such as New York, Chicago, California, London, Georgia, even in smaller towns like Bloomington, Illinois, Wild West shows were the "it" thing. Presented to crowds of 20,000 and more, they were spine-tingling, rip-roaring sensations not to be missed, if nothing else, for the sake of a story to tell a grandchild fifty years later. As the harsh, open expanses of the American West closed in with the heavy footsteps of manifest destiny, the "character building" quality of Western land and Western life found a new home in Wild West shows …

An Iterative Learning Algorithm For Deciphering Stegoscripts: A Grammatical Approach For Motif Discovery, Guandong Wang, Weixiong Zhang Apr 2005

An Iterative Learning Algorithm For Deciphering Stegoscripts: A Grammatical Approach For Motif Discovery, Guandong Wang, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Steganography, or information hiding, is to conceal the existence of messages so as to protect their confidentiality. We consider de-ciphering a stegoscript, a text with secret messages embedded within a covertext, and identifying the vocabularies used in the mes-sages, with no knowledge of the vocabularies and grammar in which the script was writ-ten. Our research was motivated by the prob-lem of identifying conserved non-coding func-tional elements (motifs) in regulatory regions of genome sequences, which we view as stego-scripts constructed by nature with a statis-tical model consisting of a dictionary and a grammar. We develop an iterative learning algorithm, WordSpy, to …

Fanconi Anemia Complementation Group D2 (Fancd2) Functions Independently Of Brca2- And Rad51-Associated Homologous Recombination In Response To Dna Damage, Akihiro Ohashi, Malgorzata Z. Zdzienicka, Junjie Chen, Fergus J. Couch Apr 2005

Fanconi Anemia Complementation Group D2 (Fancd2) Functions Independently Of Brca2- And Rad51-Associated Homologous Recombination In Response To Dna Damage, Akihiro Ohashi, Malgorzata Z. Zdzienicka, Junjie Chen, Fergus J. Couch

ETSU Faculty Works

The BRCA2 breast cancer tumor suppressor is involved in the repair of double strand breaks and broken replication forks by homologous recombination through its interaction with DNA repair protein Rad51. Cells defective in BRCA2-FANCD1 are extremely sensitive to mitomycin C (MMC) similarly to cells deficient in any of the Fanconi anemia (FA) complementation group proteins (FANC). These observations suggest that the FA pathway and the BRCA2 and Rad51 repair pathway may be linked, although a functional connection between these pathways in DNA damage signaling remains to be determined. Here, we systematically investigated the interaction between these pathways. We show that …

Identification Of New Mrna Targets Of Puf Protein-Mediated Decay In Yeast, Randi J. Ulbricht Apr 2005

Identification Of New Mrna Targets Of Puf Protein-Mediated Decay In Yeast, Randi J. Ulbricht

Theses

Precise regulation of gene expression is accomplished at many levels. Puf proteins are a widely conserved family of RNA binding proteins that regulate gene expression by influencing the stability of their target mRNA transcripts. Puf family members have been characterized as transcript-specific repressors in Drosophila, Dictyostelium, mouse, C. elegans, and Xenopus. In S. cerevisiae, there are 5 conserved Puf family members. Two of them, Puf3p and Puf5p, are known to destabilize their mRNA targets, down-regulating gene expression. The remaining yeast Pufs, Puf1p, Puf2p and Puf4p, are homologous to Puf3p and Puf5p, suggesting that they too …

A Longitudinal Study On The Effectiveness Of Preschool Special Education, Kimberley L. Maneval Apr 2005

A Longitudinal Study On The Effectiveness Of Preschool Special Education, Kimberley L. Maneval

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this longitudinal cohort study was to analyze the grade school placements of children who received preschool special education services in order to determine how this type of early intervention impacted future learning. Data was obtained through non-interactive evaluation of existing class lists, student records, and Application for State School Aide (ASSA) reports of 342 disabled or developmentally delayed children between 3 and 5 years of age who participated in Evesham Township's Preschool Disabled Program between 1990 and 2001. Data from this study was also used to re-evaluate the preschool curriculum, policies and procedures, and to plan new …

Ocular Surface Epithelia Contain Abcg2-Dependent Side Population Cells Exhibiting Features Associated With Stem Cells., Murat T Budak, Onder S Alpdogan, Mingyuan Zhou, Robert M Lavker, M A Murat Akinci, J Mario Wolosin

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

When cell populations are incubated with the DNA-binding dye Hoechst 33342 and subjected to flow cytometry analysis for Hoechst 33342 emissions, active efflux of the dye by the ABCG2/BCRP1 transporter causes certain cells to appear as a segregated cohort, known as a side population (SP). Stem cells from several tissues have been shown to possess the SP phenotype. As the lack of specific surface markers has hindered the isolation and subsequent biochemical characterization of epithelial stem cells this study sought to determine the existence of SP cells and expression of ABCG2 in the epithelia of the ocular surface and evaluate …

Hiv/Aids Workplace Interventions In South Africa And The United States, Joel Christian Reed Apr 2005

Hiv/Aids Workplace Interventions In South Africa And The United States, Joel Christian Reed

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the private sector response to the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and the United States (US) in multinational businesses and corporations. From an epidemiological perspective HIV/AIDS and its co infections cause acute and chronic illness in the workforce leading to programs and interventions of various complexity and effectiveness. Workforce HIV/AIDS epidemiology in South Africa and the US is reviewed and discussed. From a critical medical anthropology perspective multinational corporations are political and economic entities with immense resources and power over people, communities, and governments globally. …

Assessment Of Invasive Activities Of Ovarian Cancer Cells In Vitro, Hetal Shah Apr 2005

Assessment Of Invasive Activities Of Ovarian Cancer Cells In Vitro, Hetal Shah

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The interactions between neighboring cells and between cells and their attached substrate have long been studied in tissue culture. These in vitro studies may provide information regarding cell behavior in vivo including cell movement, cell proliferation, tissue development and wound healing. Transcellular resistance (or impedance) measurements, using various dc or ac techniques have been used to study the barrier function of epithelial and endothelial cell layers. With an appropriate equivalent circuit used for data analysis, junctional resistance between cells and other cellular properties, including cell membrane capacitance, can be determined. However, these techniques have seldom been applied to fibroblastic cell …

Establishing A Farmers Market For A Low-Income Latino Community, Ann L. Bretnall Apr 2005

Establishing A Farmers Market For A Low-Income Latino Community, Ann L. Bretnall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For the past decade, Florida’s Latino population has significantly increased and is now the third largest in the United States. The same trend has also occurred in Hillsborough County. Social and economic disparities are significant as Latinos earn less than non-Hispanic whites and many live in poverty. A major concern of this population is the lack of access to inexpensive fresh fruits and vegetables. Findings from prior research show that the diet of immigrants often change quickly upon their arrival to the United States, with an increased emphasis on fast food and soft drinks and a reduction in the consumption …
