Keynote: Role Of Values & Culture In Information Technology, Prof. Dr. Anis Ahmad
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
It is no longer unusual to see, in a remote town in northern area in Pakistan, a practically non-literate wagon driver calling from his Nokia cell phone his uncle in Dubai or in Karachi. He enjoys sharing with him about his success in business and the settlement of family disputes. While he is driving on dangerous curvy roads and having this conversation, in the back seat of the wagon a comparatively young person is playing games on his cell phone. All this was unimaginable a quarter of a century ago.
Making State Law In Federal Court, Benjamin C. Glassman
Making State Law In Federal Court, Benjamin C. Glassman
ExpressO
Abstract: We know from Erie R.R. Co. v. Tompkins that unless the Constitution or a federal statute provides the rule of decision in federal court, state law does. Contrary to the assumption of several recent commentators, however, Erie itself does not tell the federal court how to ascertain what is the law of the state, and the refrain that federal courts are to predict what the state supreme court would decide not only proves unhelpful upon examination, but also has tended to confuse the courts themselves in recent years. Yet federal courts routinely face questions of state law that admit …
“Racially-Tailored” Medicine Unraveled, Sharona Hoffman
“Racially-Tailored” Medicine Unraveled, Sharona Hoffman
ExpressO
In June 2005, the FDA approved BiDil, a heart failure medication that is labeled for use only by African-Americans and thus, is the first treatment of its kind. The drug likely portends a future of growing interest in “race-based” medicine. This phenomenon is emerging at the same time that scientists, in light of the Human Genome Project, are reaching an understanding that “race” has no biological meaning, and consequently, “racially-tailored” medicine is both puzzling and troubling.
This Article explores the reasons for the new focus on “racial-profiling” in medicine. It analyzes the risks and dangers of this approach, including medical …
Bargaining Power In Contract Theory, Daniel D. Barnhizer
Bargaining Power In Contract Theory, Daniel D. Barnhizer
ExpressO
This Article analyzes the role that legal conceptions of bargaining power play in defining the jurisprudence of contract law. Contract law cannot ignore bargaining power asymmetries. Unchecked power imbalances in the bargaining context soon become indistinguishable from naked coercion, and at some level the imbalance undermines both the consent of the weaker party and the legitimacy of the resulting bargain. The debate over the role of the legal doctrine of inequality of bargaining power and subdoctrines such as unconscionability and duress has largely focused on whether and how the state should intervene in individual private agreements to correct perceived power …

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

The Impact Of Eu Membership On Baltic Investors' Portfolio Management, Christina Vricella
The Impact Of Eu Membership On Baltic Investors' Portfolio Management, Christina Vricella
Honors College Theses
This paper investigates the impact of European Union membership on Baltic investors' ability to diversify. The research addresses the impact of E.U. membership on effectiveness of country-based diversificatin versus industry-based diversification strategies for Latvian investors. I compared correlation matrices of country index returns before and after the Baltic entry date of May 1,2004. Then, I created similar correlation matrices for the Baltic industries. In the pre-unification period, Latvian equity returns were inversely correlated with other European and U.S. indices after translating into the Latvian currency. However, after joining EU, cross-country correlations increased dramatically. As a result, Latvian investors have lost …
Microfinance In Neoliberal Times: The Experience Of An Egyptian Ngo, Sarah A. Tobin
Microfinance In Neoliberal Times: The Experience Of An Egyptian Ngo, Sarah A. Tobin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Development non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are under immense pressure to adhere to the programs and methods put forth by external donors, particularly if the NGOs rely on the funding to sustain their own organizations. Those external donors that represent neoliberal ideologies and enforce neoliberal practices, particularly in the area of microfinance, maintain a power that most recipient NGOs cannot evade. This becomes a difficult position for the NGOs to navigate as they try to accomplish good work in their communities. This research project is a study into the experience of one NGO, the Egyptian Development Organization (EDO), as it implemented microfinance …

Sociology
The Arctic system is moving toward a new state that falls outside the envelope of glacial-interglacial fluctuations that prevailed during recent Earth history. This future Arctic is likely to have dramatically less permanent ice than exists at present. At the present rate of change, a summer ice-free Arctic Ocean within a century is a real possibility, a state not witnessed for at least a million years. The change appears to be driven largely by feedback-enhanced global climate warming, and there seem to be few, if any processes or feedbacks within the Arctic system that are capable of altering the trajectory …

Getting Grounded In The Post Hometown World, Hedley Burrell, David E. Drew
Getting Grounded In The Post Hometown World, Hedley Burrell, David E. Drew
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Remember when Americans had hometowns? "Where are you from?" we'd ask one another.
And the answer would come back: New York City. St. Joseph, Mo. Atlanta. Santa Barbara, Calif. Chattanooga, Tenn.
But odds are that now we'd get a more complicated response. It'd go something like this: "Well, I was born in Atlanta but we moved to Baltimore when I was 11 and in my junior year of high school, we went out to L.A. I've been in Chicago for a year."
And even this might not be quite accurate. The speaker may have been born in an Atlanta exurb …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
This risk assessment has been carried out following the guidelines for Health Risk Analysis entitled “Wild Animal Translocations” prepared by the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre (http://wildlife1.usask.ca). It includes 9 comprehensive appendices of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal organisms reported from domestic sheep, goats, llamas and wild sheep and mountain goats. The report is a breakdown of those appendices into discussions of organisms of major concern, organisms of unknown concern, organisms of minimal concern, and those that cause no apparent disease, are not transmissible between the species of interest, or do not occur in Canada. Where possible, organisms were assigned …
