How To Play The Game: Constructing Australian Masculinities In An Increasingly Mediated World, Carl Broman Jan 2005

How To Play The Game: Constructing Australian Masculinities In An Increasingly Mediated World, Carl Broman

Theses : Honours

Increasing research into social constructions of gender, have begun focusing on the study of male behaviour, or masculinity. The study of hegemonic masculinities helps display the dominant forms of socialised acceptable behaviour and expose artificial constructions of gender difference. Concerning trends in destructive masculine behaviour may find relationships with other forms of social disconnection linked with late capitalism. I look at how direct localised contributions to constructing masculinities have been disempowered by the expansion of the Western corporate economy. The culture of popular sport has been transformed to create an individual identification with Australian Rules Football and its masculinities, that …

An Exploration Of Non-Residential Fathers' Relationship With Their Children: Working Towards A Positive Psychology Approach, Suzanne Ray Jan 2005

An Exploration Of Non-Residential Fathers' Relationship With Their Children: Working Towards A Positive Psychology Approach, Suzanne Ray

Theses : Honours

In western culture, the majority of fathers become the non-residential parent after separation and it is reported many disengage from their children as time goes on. This review will elucidate the effects of separation on the father role. Within this body of literature there are two dominant ideologies pertaining to fathers – father absence and father importance. The findings from research support that the quality of contact rather than quantity of contact is important for close bonds between non-residential fathers and their children. There are a number of factors that can help or hinder this relationship which are intrinsically linked …

"The Ship Has Gone Down With The Captain" : A Study Of The Framing Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Commission (Atsic) Chairman Geoff Clark In The Australian, Lauren Heinritz Jan 2005

"The Ship Has Gone Down With The Captain" : A Study Of The Framing Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Commission (Atsic) Chairman Geoff Clark In The Australian, Lauren Heinritz

Theses : Honours

This study looks at the frames used in the Australian newspaper's coverage of Indigenous leader Geoff Clark, from his re-election as chairman of the Aboriginal and Tones Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) at the end of 2002 until the agency's demise in March 2004, and finds two divergent ways of reporting Indigenous issues. In summary, the Geoff Clark case study highlights the ideological divide between proponents of the so-called "tights-based agenda" in Indigenous affairs and those that favour the "responsibilities-based" agenda. When established in 1990, ATSIC was viewed as a significant step towards Indigenous self-determination. With official federal government policy shifting …

The Nation-State And The Transnational Capitalist Class In The Era Of Global Accumulation, Jeffery Robert Gunn Jan 2005

The Nation-State And The Transnational Capitalist Class In The Era Of Global Accumulation, Jeffery Robert Gunn

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis represents a critical comparative and historical study of the challenges posed to the autonomy and sovereignty of the nation-state by the emerging transnational class structure in the current era of global accumulation. I examine key elements of modern state theory, contrasting them with class-based state theory. National models may be extended to help illustrate transnational relationships. Transnational institutions, components of the transnational state apparatus, serve as examples of the means by which this transnational capitalist class formulates and implements policy. But this transnational structure is not stable; it suffers from the very contradictions immanent to capitalism itself. I …

The Equip Model And The New Horizons Program, Yi-Lang Chao Jan 2005

The Equip Model And The New Horizons Program, Yi-Lang Chao

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The New Horizon Program mainly offers services to juveniles to correct their deviant behaviors and cognitive distortions, including substance abuse assessment and counseling, anger management, medication support, individual and group counseling, mental health counseling, and social skill development training. The EQUIP model is the main element in the in-custody service of the New Horizons Program. We already know that the EQUIP program (1996 in Ohio State) was effective; however, after being implemented in Humboldt County, does the EQUIP model still can provide the New Horizons Program positive functions and assistance? CAFAS and YSR were adopted as indicators to measure intermediate …

Learning For Life: The Social And Academic Outcomes Of A Waldorf Education, Adriane S. Mozzini Jan 2005

Learning For Life: The Social And Academic Outcomes Of A Waldorf Education, Adriane S. Mozzini

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Waldorf schools are nationally and internationally federated institutions that provide kindergarten through twelfth grade educations. Created in Germany in 1919 during the Progressive Education Movement and existing in the United States since 1928, Waldorf schools use a true unit study approach integrating the arts into all areas of academic study, yet eschewing some of the standard facets of American education, such as standardized testing, most subject matter testing (in grades K-8), competition for grades, ability grouping and academic tracking, and the use of electronic technology (in grades K-8). Currently, 149 private Waldorf and 44 Waldorf-methods public charter schools serve over …

Approaches To Brown V. Board Of Education: Some Notes On Teaching A Seminal Case, Joel K. Goldstein Jan 2005

Approaches To Brown V. Board Of Education: Some Notes On Teaching A Seminal Case, Joel K. Goldstein

All Faculty Scholarship

During the past year, dozens of American law schools commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education.1 The attention was appropriate because Brown is one of the Supreme Court’s seminal decisions. By all appearances, the fiftieth anniversary of Brown attracted much more attention than did, say, the 200th anniversary of Marbury v. Madison2 in 2003 or the centennial of Lochner v. New York3 this year. Brown’s unique significance resides in part in the fact that it changed America’s constitutional norm regarding race, our most embarrassing and vexing problem. In effectively overturning the doctrine of Plessy …
