The study aim is to determine the time dependent effect of insulin on leptin staining intensity in the rat ovary. METHODS: Normally cycling rats were investigated in a spontaneous cycle (control, n=6), one cycle with insulin treatment 2U/day for 5 days (D5) (n=6), and 2 cycles with insulin treatment 2 U/day for 10 days (D10) (n=6) in the Department of Histology and Embryology, Celal Bayar University, Manisa, Turkey, from May 2004 to …

Purchasing Power Parity And Exchange Rate In Nigeria: A Regime Switching Approach., M. C. Ononugbo Jun 2005

Purchasing Power Parity And Exchange Rate In Nigeria: A Regime Switching Approach., M. C. Ononugbo

Economic and Financial Review

This study basically extends the work of Obaseki (1998) by including an additional variable to capture the impact of changes in exchange rate regime. The paper undertakes an empirical examination of the long-run co-movement in naira exchange rate and relative price levels of Nigeria and USA. The impact of the policy swap from a system of exchange rate control to a market based system (captured by a dummy variable) is investigated using an error correction model. The outcome reveals the applicability of the PPP using Nigerian data. From the analysis, the prevailing nominal exchange rate during the period closely approximates …

Australia's Damaging International Trade Practice: The Case Against Cruelty To Greyhounds, Alison G. Jones Jun 2005

Australia's Damaging International Trade Practice: The Case Against Cruelty To Greyhounds, Alison G. Jones

Washington International Law Journal

The Australian greyhound racing industry is capitalizing on newly emerging markets in countries such as China and South Korea. The industry's drive to profit from promoting greyhound racing in these countries has put the welfare of greyhounds at risk. By exporting these dogs to China and South Korea, Australia is violating the spirit and general intent of its own animal cruelty laws, which guard against the type of animal abuse that occurs largely unchecked in those countries. Therefore, Australia should put an end to such exports as soon as possible. Under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ("GATT"), Australia …

Bone Density Testing As An Early Detection Devise For Anorexia Nervosa And Osteoporosis In Pre-Adolescent And Adolescent Girls, Kelle L. Brooks

Masters Theses

Osteoporosis has become one of the leading health problems for postmenopausal women in the United States, however, it has been shown that preadolescent and adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa are at an unusually high risk for early on-set osteoporosis and bone fractures.

Bone density testing has already proving itself as an accurate form of detection in post-menopausal women and the elderly and is widely used at medical institutions, clinics, and pharmacies throughout the United States as an inexpensive, non-invasive, and accurate technique for detecting low bone mass.

This research aims to examine anorexia nervosa and its long-term effects on the …

Particle Size And Effective Fiber In Dairy Cow Diets, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur Jun 2005

Particle Size And Effective Fiber In Dairy Cow Diets, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Limited chewing takes place when a cow grazes or eats chopped forage, and a more thorough mastication will occur later when she “chews her cud.” Rumination, of which cud chewing is a part, is the process by which the contents of the rumen (the first chamber of the stomach) are thoroughly mixed and where the larger, less digested particles are redirected upward, to be regurgitated, chewed, and swallowed again. This process is repeated over and over until the feed particles attain a small enough size with relatively greater surface areas that enable bacteria and protozoa in the rumen to more …

Effects Of Glutamine In Critical Illness, Basar Cander, Erdal Kalkan, Aytekin Kaymakci, Ramazan Koylu, Husamettin Vatansev, Ersin Bulun

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Under normal physiological conditions, glutamine is synthesized in large amounts by the human body and is considered nonessential. It has been hypothesized that glutamine may become a conditionally essential amino acid in patients with catabolic disease. The objective of this study is to investigate the prognostic effect of glutamine. METHODS: For this study, we selected 48 patients from the intensive care unit. Group I consisted of 33 patients whose treatment included glutamine. We placed the remaining 15 patients in group II, and they did not receive glutamine in their treatment. We retrospectively investigated treatment time, leucocyte levels and outcome. …

Fit-To-Fight: Waist Vs. Waist/Height Measurements To Determine An Individual's Fitness Level A Study In Statistical Regression And Analysis, Steven J. Swiderski Jun 2005

Fit-To-Fight: Waist Vs. Waist/Height Measurements To Determine An Individual's Fitness Level A Study In Statistical Regression And Analysis, Steven J. Swiderski

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force members are to be tested for fitness by measuring their abdominal circumference, counting the number of sit-ups and push-ups they can accomplish, and the time it takes them to run 1 and miles. The abdominal measurement is a "one-size-fits-all" fitness standard. This research determines that a person's waist-to-height ratio is a better measurement than the waist measurement to estimate an individual's fitness level. This research estimates that all of the variables used to proxy fitness (Gender, Age, Height, Waist Circumference, Waist-to-Height Ratio, Push-Ups, and Sit-Ups) are statistically significant and do represent good estimators of physical fitness. This research …

A Behavioral Model For The Assessment And Management Of Dehydration In Older Adults, Leilani Feliciano Jun 2005

A Behavioral Model For The Assessment And Management Of Dehydration In Older Adults, Leilani Feliciano

Dissertations

Dehydration is a serious health concern in the elderly, constituting 1 of the 10 most common causes for hospitalization in this population (Sanservo, 1997). Previous research on dehydration has typically been conducted within nursing home settings (Chidester & Spangler, 1997; Holbren, Hassell, Williams, & Helle, 1999; Spangler, Risley, & Bilyew, 1984) without specific attention to the variables maintaining dehydration for any given individual. A functional behavioral approach to assessment and prevention or intervention for dehydration would involve identifying maintaining variables in the environment that can be altered to produce effective, non-intrusive interventions to increase healthy fluid consumption. The current project …

Environmental Justice And Women's Rights: A Tribute To Wangari Maathai, Mechthild Nagel Jun 2005

Environmental Justice And Women's Rights: A Tribute To Wangari Maathai, Mechthild Nagel

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The United Nations Millenium Development Goals (MDG) focus on key social, economic and political issues; gender and environment are just some of the areas noted. What are the lessons learnt from Kenya’s Green Belt Movement (GBM), spearheaded by Wangari Maathai? MDG analysts might benefit from understanding an NGO’s strategies, like GBM. It will be argued that GBM’s consensus movement mobilized urban and rural women around tree planting income-generating activities, consciousness raising, women’s rights, and political empowerment. GBM’s harambee spirit has the potential of replication across the continent.

Primary Prevention Healthcare Among Black American Men: Social Ecological Factors Predictive Of Prostate Cancer Early Detection Access, Virginia Diane Bush Agbonkhese Woods

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Access to healthcare requires individuals to have a place to go, a healthcare provider to see them, resources to obtain proper care, and the appropriate health services given in an appropriate timeframe. Non-Hispanic Black American men have the highest incidence rate of prostate cancer in the world, 180.6 per 100,000 (NCI, 2004). It is not clear as to why high rates persist, but higher death rates are associated with late detection. This mixed-methods ecological study was to investigate physician and Black male perceptions and practices regarding prostate cancer early detection with prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, and the digital …

Effects Of Feeding Regular Eggs, N-3 Fatty Acid Enriched Eggs, And Walnuts, On Blood Lipids, Membrane Incorporation Of Fatty Acids, And Serum Lutein, In Free-Living Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians, Bonny Burns-Whitmore Jun 2005

Effects Of Feeding Regular Eggs, N-3 Fatty Acid Enriched Eggs, And Walnuts, On Blood Lipids, Membrane Incorporation Of Fatty Acids, And Serum Lutein, In Free-Living Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians, Bonny Burns-Whitmore

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Americans do not receive enough n-3 fatty acids (F. A.) in their diets. Walnuts are good source of α-linolenic acid (ALA), while n-3 F.A. enriched eggs provide a dietary source of DHA. Whether ALA and DHA have equivalent effects modifying cardiovascular risk factors is not known. This study compared the changes in blood and erythrocyte membrane lipids in twenty free-living lacto-ovo vegetarians following the consumption of regular eggs (6/wk), n-3 F.A. enriched eggs (6/wk), or walnuts (6 oz/wk) in a triple crossover design.

Results indicate significant differences between treatments for serum triacylglycerols (TAGs), total cholesterol (TC), apo B, apo B: …

Prenatal Cocaine Exposure And Cardiac Programming, Soochan Bae Jun 2005

Prenatal Cocaine Exposure And Cardiac Programming, Soochan Bae

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Human epidemiological studies have shown a clear association of adverse intrauterine environment and an increased risk of ischemia heart disease in later adult life. Cocaine abuse during pregnancy has been shown to cause abnormities in the heart during fetal and postnatal development, but mechanisms underlying the detrimental effects of cocaine on the developing heart are not fully understood. The central hypothesis is that cocaine exposure during fetal development may cause in utero programming of apoptotic pathways, which may has lasting and prolong effect on heart development postnatally.

In a pregnant rat model, chronic hypoxia increased apoptosis in the fetal heart …

Resveratrol Regulates Igf- Ii And Cathepsin D In Breast Cancer Cells, Sharda Kalla Vyas Jun 2005

Resveratrol Regulates Igf- Ii And Cathepsin D In Breast Cancer Cells, Sharda Kalla Vyas

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the US. Phytoestrogen resveratrol (RS V) has been described as a potential ehemotherapeutic agent, but has been associated with breast cancer cell growth and cell death. RSV binds to estrogen receptors (ER) and functions as a mixed estrogen agonist/antagonist. The mechanism by which RSV regulates breast cancer growth is largely unknown, but it likely targets factors regulated by estrogens. Insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) and its precursor (proIGF-II) are estrogen-regulated mitogens that are over-expressed in breast carcinoma. Thus, I hypothesized that IGF-II/proIGF-II might mediate the biphasic effects of …

Psychological Stress And High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Levels In Overweight And Obese Men, Olivia L. Moses Jun 2005

Psychological Stress And High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Levels In Overweight And Obese Men, Olivia L. Moses

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background and Purpose. High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a measure of inflammatory response, is now considered an independent marker for coronary heart disease. Psychological stress also affects the immune system and influences the inflammatory response. Ladwig, et al (2003) found a significant positive association between hs-CRP levels and depression (F=4.9, p^.008) in 726 obese males, even after adjusting for smoking, high blood pressure and age. This study investigated if there was a similar association between increased hs-CRP levels and psychological stress in overweight and obese males.

Method. Sixty-one overweight (n=28) or obese (n= 33) males, ages 20-35, were recmited …

Predictors Of Intention To Use Contraception, Given Alcohol Consumption, Among Women In Southeast Alaska, Donna Louise Hebbeler Jun 2005

Predictors Of Intention To Use Contraception, Given Alcohol Consumption, Among Women In Southeast Alaska, Donna Louise Hebbeler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fetal alcohol exposure is a serious public health problem and is 100% preventable. Traditionally, FASD prevention programs and research recommendations have targeted peri-conceptual or pregnant women. Another approach to the prevention of FASD involves preventing pregnancy in women who use alcohol. The purpose of this cross sectional study was to identify factors that predicted women’s intention to use contraception using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), to determine if predictors of the theoretical constructs varied in women depending on alcohol use, and to examine interactions between alcohol use and TPB constructs. Qualitative data was gathered to triangulate with the quantitative …

Secular Trends In Life Expectancy By Diet Status Among Never Smoking Seventh-Day Adventists, Noha Salim Daher Jun 2005

Secular Trends In Life Expectancy By Diet Status Among Never Smoking Seventh-Day Adventists, Noha Salim Daher

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To evaluate how life expectancy changed by age and secular time from 1960 through 1988, two cohort studies, the Adventist Mortality Study (AMS, 1960-1985, n = 27,530) and the Adventist Health Study (AHS, 1976-1988, n = 34,192) were combined. The life expectancy of omnivores was compared to vegetarians separately in never-smoking males and females for all-cause mortality, and where the cause of death was cardiovascular disease or all site-cancer. Life expectancies were calculated for subjects who had survived to ages 30, 50, 70, and 80 during six calendar periods: 1960- 1964, 1965-1969, 1970-1974, 1975-1979, 1980-1984, and 1985-1988. Ten-year calendar periods …

The Application Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Self-Care Behaviors In Type 2 Diabetics, Heather N. Mercer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background. The Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) has been investigated as a model of health behavior change; however, it has only begun to gain recognition in the diabetic population, and has not yet been investigated as it relates to the full-spectrum of diabetes self-care behaviors.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the pattern of stages of change across four self-care behaviors between intervention and control groups, and examine psychosocial and health outcome variables.

Method. In a cross-sectional design, a sample of 132 adult subjects with type 2 diabetes completed surveys. The survey assessed stages of change among …
