Effect Of Almond Intake On Fecal Fat Excretion In Healthy Adults, Janine Alisha Zemaitis Jun 2005

Effect Of Almond Intake On Fecal Fat Excretion In Healthy Adults, Janine Alisha Zemaitis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Caloric consumption in excess leads to weight gain. Consuming nuts, in particular almonds, on a regular basis would likely increase overall caloric intake due to their high fat content, assuming complete digestion and absorption. However, multiple studies report no significant change in body weight when subjects consume nut-rich diets.

Objective: The objective of this study is to measure the effects of almond consumption on stool composition, particularly individual fatty acid content.

Design: Subjects participated in a randomized, crossover, controlled feeding study. Following a 2-week run-in period on a typical American diet (34% energy from fat), subjects were randomized to …

Interactions Among Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Yellow Foxtail, And Corn, M. M. Ellsbury, K. R. Banken, S. A. Clay, F. Forcella

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Field studies at sites with two contrasting soil types investigated effects from the presence of yellow foxtail [Setaria pumila (Poir.) Roem. and Schult.], established in bands parallel to corn rows, on western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) survival, corn root injury, lodging, biomass production, and yield. Results suggested that the presence of foxtail as an alternate host inßuenced the degree and progression of corn rootworm damage and adult emergence in a givenlocality. Rootworm adults emergedlater from foxtail band areas and had smaller head capsule size than did individuals from areas without foxtail, consistent with earlier Þndings that foxtail in …

Freedom, Servitude And Voluntary Labor, Michael Kevane, Jonathon Conning Jun 2005

Freedom, Servitude And Voluntary Labor, Michael Kevane, Jonathon Conning

Economics

We present an economic framework to revisit and reframe some important debates over the nature of free versus unfree labor and the economic consequences of emancipation. We use a simple general equilibrium model in which labor can be either free or coerced and where land and labor will be exchanged on markets that can be competitive or manipulated or via other non-market collusive arrangements. By working with variants of the same basic model under different assumptions about initial economy-wide factor endowments and asset ownership we can compare equilibrium distributional outcomes under different institutional and contractual arrangements including markets with free …

Nitrogen Use Efficiency – State Of The Art, Achim R. Dobermann Jun 2005

Nitrogen Use Efficiency – State Of The Art, Achim R. Dobermann

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Nitrogenous fertilizers have contributed much to the remarkable increase in food production that has occurred during the past 50 years (Smil, 2001). Globally, however, N fertilizers also account for 33% of the total annual creation of Nr or 63% of all anthropogenic sources of reactive nitrogen (Nr) (Table 1). Reactive nitrogen is defined as all biologically, photochemically, and/or radiatively active forms of N -- a diverse pool of nitrogenous compounds that includes organic compounds (e.g. urea, amines, proteins, amides), mineral N forms, such as NO3- and NH4+ as well as gases that are chemically active in …

Surface Display Of Recombinant Proteins On Bacillus Thuringiensis Spores, Cheng Du, Wing C. Chan, Timothy W. Mckeithan, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

The insecticidal protoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis has been shown to be a major component of the spore coat. We have developed a novel surface display system using B. thuringiensis spores in which the N-terminal portion of the protoxin is replaced with a heterologous protein. The expression vector with a sporulationspecific promoter was successfully used to display green fluorescent protein and a single-chain antibody (scFv) gene that encodes anti-4-ethoxymethylene-2-phenyl-2-oxazolin-5-one (anti-phOx) antibody. The spores that carry the anti-phOx antibody can bind to phOx specifically.

Epidemiology Of Type I Diabetes Mellitus Among Arab Children, Mohamed A. Abdullah Jun 2005

Epidemiology Of Type I Diabetes Mellitus Among Arab Children, Mohamed A. Abdullah

Saudi Medical Journal

In this article, the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus among Arab children (<15 years) living in Arab and non-Arab countries is reviewed. These data include the incidence, prevalence and etiopathogenic factors including genetics, environmental factors as well as autoimmune disease markers aside from clinical presentation at onset. The review is based on the information from publications in the international literature identified by searching Medline, other websites as well as personal experience and some communications. The obtained data suggest that the incidence of type 1 diabetes in these countries is increasing similar to the experience in other parts of the world. High incidence has been reported among Arab children who immigrated to some Western countries. The highest incidence is in Qatar and Kuwait and the lowest is in Oman and Jordan. There is considerable variation among countries, which could not be explained on genetic or climatic variations alone. Other environmental factors particularly nutritional ones including high intake of dairy products and vitamin D deficiency are possibly operating. Further, nationwide research from different countries covering the rural as well as urban areas and different ethnic intermixes are needed. To overcome financial and facility problems that hinder research; some cooperation between these countries as well as international bodies are needed.

Patterns Of Cortical Growth As Indicators Of Population Health: An Exploratory Analysis Of Subadult Remains From The Tell Abraq Site, Uae, Jessica L. Rhodes Jun 2005

Patterns Of Cortical Growth As Indicators Of Population Health: An Exploratory Analysis Of Subadult Remains From The Tell Abraq Site, Uae, Jessica L. Rhodes

Masters Theses

The analysis of children in archaeological contexts is a relatively new field of study that emerged largely as a result of feminist and gender studies in the social sciences. Thus, methodologies that are typically employed in bioarchaeological analyses of children have yet to be refined and standardized. The commingling of subadult remains in archaeological contexts further confounds this issue by eliminating the ability of the researcher to establish reasonable age-at-death distributions.

This study seeks to explore the utility of analyzing patterns of cortical growth-for-diaphyseal length in commingled subadult remains. Specifically, commingled subadult remains excavated from the Tell Abraq site (UAE, …

Leadership, Teaching, Self Efficacy, And Networking: Untapped Benefits Of Membership In Extension Volunteer Networks, Leone Ohnoutka, Linda Waybright, Allison Nichols, Patrick Nestor

Journal of Extension

The Cooperative Extension Service has long been aware of the value of Extension service networks for developing women's skills in traditional home and family areas. Little is known about the relationship between leadership skills and these volunteer or service organizations. A study of Extension Homemakers/Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) groups was conducted to determine benefits of membership. Benefits can be categorized into four categories: leadership, teaching, personal efficacy, and networking. These surpass skill and knowledge gained about homemaking and parenting. Results suggest Extension should consider developing service groups throughout the country as "hothouses" for developing the leadership of volunteers, particularly …

Introduction: Volumes, Valerie Begley, Olga Gershenson Jun 2005

Introduction: Volumes, Valerie Begley, Olga Gershenson

Journal of International Women's Studies

This special issue of the JIWS seeks to examine the topic of gendered constructions of space(s). How does space structure our understanding of gender? How does it participate in cultural constructions of race, class, and sexuality? What are the political and economic dimensions of the spaces that we construct and that construct us? In this issue we wanted to explore the role(s) that space plays in shaping and maintaining identities and power relations. Far from being neutral or self-evident, we take space to be a site and a means of cultural power, informed by a set of historically and culturally …

The Effects Of Digital Audio On Social Presence, Motivation And Perceived Learning In Asynchronous Learning Networks, Eunhee Kim

Dissertations

This study explores the possibilities of applying digital audio to the ALN environment, so that students can speak and listen rather than type and read. Two sets of 1x2 field experiments (text vs. digital audio) were conducted with two formats of digital audio -recorded voice messages and narrated Microsoft PowerPoint presentation - used in several NJIT courses conducted via ALN. The perceptions of communication media were measured from two different user perspectives: active use when the subjects created their assignments using prescribed communication media (audio or text) and passive use when the subjects viewed/listened to other students' work.

The perceptions …

The Health Challenge In Pakistan: Prognosis And Prescription, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

There is a strong theoretical and empirical evidence that Economic growth causes improvements in human development which, in turn, increases economic growth. The improvement in health results in enhancement of basic capabilities that adds value to human life. The transmission to growth takes place through impact on worker productivity, through demography and through trade and investment. Health has a positive effect on poverty reduction too. Poor households are hit by major illness and fall into poverty trap. Lower earnings due to withdrawal from full time employment increases the risk of illness for the rest of the households. Risk of falling …

Endothelial Cell Pseudopods And Angiogenesis Of Breast Cancer Tumors, Ivan L. Cameron, Nicholas Short, Luzhe Sun, W. Elaine Hardman

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background

A neoplastic tumor cannot grow beyond a millimeter or so in diameter without recruitment of endothelial cells and new blood vessels to supply nutrition and oxygen for tumor cell survival. This study was designed to investigate formation of new blood vessels within a human growing breast cancer tumor model (MDA MB231 in mammary fat pad of nude female mouse). Once the tumor grew to 35 mm3, it developed a well-vascularized capsule. Histological sections of tumors greater than 35 mm3were stained with PAS, with CD-31 antibody (an endothelial cell maker), or with hypoxia inducible factor 1α …

Forest Resource Use, Land-Use, And Ecotourism In The RíO PláTano Biosphere Reserve, Honduras, Christina Marie Friedle

Dissertations and Theses

The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, a tropical rainforest reserve in the northeastern corner of Honduras, is home to several subsistence-based indigenous groups, including the Miskito, Pech and Garifuna, as well as the non-indigenous Ladinos. Communities within the reserve depend on forest resources, swidden agriculture, marine resources and/or small-scale ranching as the foundations for local economies. Regulations placed on these subsistence practices, after establishment of the biosphere reserve in 1980, have created unique and new pressures and resulted in a blend of traditional and innovative resource use. A notable result is the promotion of ecotourism as a solution for meeting the …
