Living On The Margins: The Analysis Of The Livelihood Strategies Of Sudanese Refugees With Closed Files In Egypt, Katarzyna Grabska Jun 2005

Living On The Margins: The Analysis Of The Livelihood Strategies Of Sudanese Refugees With Closed Files In Egypt, Katarzyna Grabska

Faculty Journal Articles

Throughout history Cairo has enjoyed the status of a cosmopolitan city attracting diverse populations from across the globe. Although refugees have not constituted a significant share of its foreign residents, Egypt has also been seen as a place of exile by sizeable refugee populations, including Armenians who fled the 1915 massacre under the Ottomans, Palestinians after 1948, and Sudanese after 1983. Palestinians are said to constitute the largest share of exiled residents, numbering between 50,000 and 70,000 (El Abed 2003). In the 1950s and 1960s Cairo was host to exiles from liberation movements across Africa and the Middle East, representing …

Microcredit In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Symposium, Terry F. Buss Jun 2005

Microcredit In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Symposium, Terry F. Buss

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The stark reality is that most poor people in the world still lack access to sustainable financial services, whether it is savings, credit, or insurance. The great challenge before us is to address the constraints that exclude people from full participation in the financial sector. The International Year of Microcredit offers a pivotal opportunity for the international community to engage in a shared commitment to meet this challenge. Together, we can and must build inclusive financial sectors that help people improve their lives. structure, and scope of activities. Informal finance has not been very attractive for

Outcomes Of An Ethiopian Microfinance Program And Management Actions To Improve Services, Shannon Doocy, Dan Norell, Shimeles Teffera, Gilbert Burnham

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Management decision making in MFIs is becoming increasingly tied to collecting information about social performance. This paper examines the impact of participation in an Ethiopian microfinance program on indicators of socioeconomic status including wealth, income, and home or land ownership.A survey assessing these outcomes was conducted in May 2003 in two predominantly rural sites in Southern Ethiopia and included 819 households. The article discusses management decisions made as the result of survey findings about socioeconomic status and food security to increase retention rates and to facilitate client savings. Additionally, the management was prompted to increase the number of female clients …

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Microfinance: A Case Study From Uganda, Gayle Morris, Carolyn Barnes Jun 2005

An Assessment Of The Impact Of Microfinance: A Case Study From Uganda, Gayle Morris, Carolyn Barnes

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This paper reports the results of an impact study of three microfinance programs in Uganda—FINCA, FOCCAS, and PRIDE. Program clients and nonclient groups in three places—rural Mbole district, Kampala, and Masaha town—were studied in an initial survey and a follow-up two years later. The study found numerous positive impacts on program clients: addition of new products and services, improved or expanded enterprise sites and markets, reduced costs of inventory purchases, and increases in sales volume. Household-level impacts included new enterprises begun, increased amount spent on durable assets and agricultural inputs, increased amount of cultivated agricultural land, and increased amount of …

Are The Millennium Development Goals (Mdgs) Feasible? Can The Deadlines Be Met Particularly For Education And Gender? The Case Of Ethiopia, Meskerem Shiferaw

International Conference on African Development Archives

This paper addresses the feasibility of the MDGs in Ethiopia, in general and in particular Education and Gender issues in relation with the deadline of 2015 a target set by the UN millennium declaration. The paper will assess the possibility of achieving universal primary education by 2015 in Ethiopia, for all school age children. The role required by parents and the community, private sector and what has been so far to achieve these goals will be reviewed as a follow-up to my previous paper (educating the community, Western Michigan’s Ethiopian American Foundation International conference, 2003). Both for education and gender …

Effects Of Food Supplementation On The Physiological Ecology Of Female Western Diamond‐Backed Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Atrox), Emily N. Taylor, Michael A. Malawy, Dawn M. Browning, Shea V. Lemar, Dale F. Denardo Jun 2005

Effects Of Food Supplementation On The Physiological Ecology Of Female Western Diamond‐Backed Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Atrox), Emily N. Taylor, Michael A. Malawy, Dawn M. Browning, Shea V. Lemar, Dale F. Denardo

Biological Sciences

Food availability is an important factor in the life histories of organisms because it is often limiting and thus can affect growth, mass change, reproduction, and behaviors such as thermoregulation, locomotion, and mating. Experimental studies in natural settings allow researchers to examine the effects of food on these parameters while animals are free to behave naturally. The wide variation among organisms in energy demands and among environmental food resources suggest that responses to changes in food availability may vary among organisms. Since most supplemental feeding field experiments have been conducted on species with high energy demands, we conducted a supplemental …

Effects Of Leukemia Inhibitory Factor On 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens Jun 2005

Effects Of Leukemia Inhibitory Factor On 3t3-L1 Adipocytes, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a member of the gp130 cytokine family and signals through the receptor complex of gp130 and the LIF receptor (LIFR) to activate the JAK/STAT signaling cascade. Since LIF activates STATs 1 and 3 in adipocytes, we examined the effects of LIF on 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Our studies clearly demonstrate that LIF treatment had minimal effects on adipocyte differentiation as judged by marker gene expression, but did inhibit triacylglyceride (TAG) accumulation during adipogenesis. Acute treatment with LIF resulted in increased expression of suppressors of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS3) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-δ (C/EBPδ) mRNA in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, the …
