Pathology, East Africa
Plasma concentrations of some micronutrients are altered in the setting of acute infectious or inflammatory stress. Previous studies have provided conflicting evidence concerning the extent and direction of changes in plasma zinc concentrations during the acute phase response. We carried out an observational cohort study in 689 children enrolled in a randomized trial of zinc supplementation during acute falciparum malaria in order to evaluate the relation between plasma zinc concentration and the acute phase response. Plasma zinc was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. On admission, 70% of all subjects had low plasma zinc (<9.2 μmol/L). Multivariate analysis of predictors of admission plasma zinc showed that admission C-reactive protein (CRP), parasite density, and study site were the most important predictors. Predictors of changes in plasma zinc from admission to 72 h included baseline CRP, change in CRP, treatment group, study site, and baseline zinc concentration. In children with acute malaria infection, baseline plasma zinc concentrations were very low and were inversely correlated with CRP (r = -0.24, P < 0.0001) and the degree of parasitemia (r = -0.19, P < 0.0001). Even when CRP and time were taken into account, zinc supplementation increased plasma zinc concentration from admission to 72 h. When available, plasma zinc concentrations should be interpreted with concurrent measures of the acute phase response such as CRP. In children whose age, diet, and/or nutritional status place them at risk of zinc deficiency, those with low plasma zinc levels should be supplemented with oral zinc and followed for clinical and/or biochemical response. © 2005 American Society for Nutritional Sciences.

Metabolic Profile And Live Weight Of Male Llamas (Lama Glama) Fed With Barley Hay, Alfalfa, And Quinoa Scrub, Karla Coaquira Arratia
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years llamas have attracted great national and international interest for their qualities of human food production, fiber production for high-quality textiles, and for being an ecological animal. These qualities have allowed a resurgence of cultivating them for commercial ends. One of the principal limits is secure food for allowing a constant, sustainable growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile and live weight of male llamas (Lama glama) fed with barley hay, alfalfa hay, and quinoa scrub. The fieldwork occurred in metabolic chambers in a closed environment at the demonstration farm of the Benson …

Changes In Glutathione Peroxidase And Tissue Selenium Concentrations Of Broilers After Consuming A Diet Adequate In Selenium, R. L. Payne, L. L. Southern
Faculty Publications
Three experiments (EXP) were conducted with commercial broilers to develop a low-Se diet for comparing plasma glutathione peroxidase (pGPX3) concentrations and then to compare pGPX3 and plasma and tissue Se concentrations in broilers fed this low-Se diet after being supplemented with sodium selenite (SS) or Se-enriched yeast (SY). With the exception of Se, all diets were nutritionally adequate. The EXP lasted from 0 to 20 or 22 d posthatching, and treatments were replicated with 6 to 8 pens of 6 to 15 chicks per pen. The results of EXP 1 and 2 indicated that a cornstarch-dextrose diet containing 10% torula …

Liberalization Of Village Banking In Guatemala: Structural Differences In Village Banking Institutions, Erica L. Hill
Liberalization Of Village Banking In Guatemala: Structural Differences In Village Banking Institutions, Erica L. Hill
Honors Theses
The International Year of Microcredit in 2005 facilitates public awareness campaigns of microfinance initiatives. Village banking allows microfinance services to reach a wider geographic region, with particular emphasis on rural regions and the poorest sector of society. It attends to those marginalized by a history of repression and conflict. In Guatemala, ethnic diversity and its accompanying social divisions have deep roots. Guatemala is an important case for village banking because of its economic reliance on village banking, the size of the country, and the large number (9) of VBIs in the country. Recent literature calls for an increase in flexibility …
Natal Dispersal Of Beavers In The Embarras River Watershed In Central Illinois, Erin A. Cleere
Natal Dispersal Of Beavers In The Embarras River Watershed In Central Illinois, Erin A. Cleere
Masters Theses
Dispersal is an important mechanism influencing the dynamics, genetics, spatial distribution and size of wildlife populations (Gese and Mech 1991). Natal dispersal may afford individuals breeding opportunities and access to resources, while reducing inbreeding and competition with family members. However, dispersal also can be risky if mortality rates are high or if mates or suitable habitat are unavailable. When dispersal costs are high, subadults may be better off remaining in their natal territory.
Although a number of previous studies have investigated natal dispersal in beavers (Castor canadensis), conclusions regarding the percentage of subadults that disperse, timing of dispersal, evidence of …

Online Learning In Nutrition And Dietetics: Student Performance And Attitudes, Dominic Upton
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Context: Behavioural studies can form an essential component of the Nutrition and Dietetics undergraduate degree. Aims: This study aimed to firstly produce on-line teaching material in Behavioural studies suitable for undergraduate Nutrition and Dietetic students. Secondly, to explore students’ views on the online material, and record their performance when taught through this innovative method. Methods: Nutrition and Dietetics students completed an online health psychology/sociology module and their performance compared to students who completed a traditional lecture based course. Student evaluations of the online course were also recorded. Findings: Results suggested that students taught through on-line medium performed no differently to …

Discovery Of The Photosynthetic Relatives Of The "Maltese Mushroom" Cynomorium, Daniel L Nickrent, Joshua P Der, Frank E Anderson
Publications
Although recent molecular phylogenetic studies have identified the photosynthetic relatives of several enigmatic holoparasitic angiosperms, uncertainty remains for the last parasitic plant order, Balanophorales, often considered to include two families, Balanophoraceae and Cynomoriaceae. The nonphotosynthetic (holoparasitic) flowering plant Cynomorium coccineum has long been known to the Muslim world as "tarthuth" and to Europeans as the "Maltese mushroom"; C. songaricum is known in Chinese medicine as "suo yang." Interest in these plants is increasing and they are being extensively collected from wild populations for use in herbal medicines. RESULTS: Here we report molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal DNA and mitochondrial …

Efficient Cellulase Production From Corn Straw By Trichoderma Reesei Lw1 Through Solid State Fermentation Process, J. Sh. Wang, J. Wang, M. Gulfraz
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Cellulase is important enzyme required for catabolism of cellulose into smaller sugars in the animal metabolism. Cellulose is plant polysaccharides and contained higher range of sugar molecules those with help of suitable enzyme and microorganism can be used for conversion of sugar into biofuels to meet the requirements of energy. In the present study Cellulase was produce from corn straw by solid state fermentation with the help of Trichoderma Reesei. The corn straw was supplemented with wheat bran for supply of essential elements ( N and C). The optimal experimental conditions like temperature, pH, time total water contents of …
