Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) Soldiers Regulate Juvenile Hormone Levels And Caste Differentiation In Workers, Lixin Mao, Gregg Henderson, Yuxiu Liu, Roger A. Laine

Faculty Publications

A caste structure is maintained in termite societies and juvenile hormone (JH) is generally regarded as the most important regulator in these termite colonies. Here, we demonstrate that the soldier caste regulates JH in workers of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Worker termites (80-100 individuals) were placed in petri dishes with 0, 5, 10, or 20% soldiers. JH III titers of groups of these workers were monitored at 14, 28, 42, and 56 d. Any changes in soldier caste proportions also were noted at each sample date. On the first sample date, the JH levels in workers were similar among treatments with …

Association Between Chronic Kidney Disease And Coronary Artery Calcification: The Dallas Heart Study, Holly Kramer, Robert Toto, Ronald Peshock, Richard Cooper, Ronald Victor Jan 2005

Association Between Chronic Kidney Disease And Coronary Artery Calcification: The Dallas Heart Study, Holly Kramer, Robert Toto, Ronald Peshock, Richard Cooper, Ronald Victor

Faculty Publications

The hypothesis that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased coronary artery calcification (CAC) was tested using data from the Dallas Heart Study, a representative sample of Dallas County residents aged 30 to 65 yr. CKD was defined as presence of microalbuminuria and GFR ≥ 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 (stage 1 to 2), or GFR < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 (stage 3 to 5), excluding end-stage kidney disease. Logistic regression was used to examine the association between stages of CKD and CAC scores > 10, > 100, and > 400 versus scores ≤ 10 compared with no CKD while adjusting for covariates. Analyses were repeated after stratifying by presence of diabetes. The mean age was 43.9 yr, and hypertension and diabetes were noted in 31.0 and 9.8%, respectively. No …

Background: Short-term studies established that calcium influences bone accretion during growth. Whether long-term supplementation influences bone accretion in young adults is not known. Objective: This study evaluated the long-term effects of calcium supplementation on bone accretion among females from childhood to young adulthood. Design: A 4-y randomized clinical trial recruited 354 females in pubertal stage 2 and optionally was extended for an additional 3 y. The mean dietary calcium intake of the participants over 7 y was ≈830 mg/d; calcium-supplemented persons received an additional ≈670 mg/d. Primary outcome variables were distal and proximal radius bone mineral density (BMD), total-body BMD …

For The Well-Being Of Minnesota’S Foster Children: What Federal Legislation Requires, Gail Chang Bohr Jan 2005

For The Well-Being Of Minnesota’S Foster Children: What Federal Legislation Requires, Gail Chang Bohr

William Mitchell Law Review

This article will discuss the federal legislation and regulations—ASFA and CFSR—that hold the states accountable for the health and well-being of children and adolescents in foster care. This article will also discuss how the Early Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) program, the comprehensive health care services that states are required to provide through Medicaid, is used to address the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents in foster care. Critical to a discussion on the well-being of foster youth is the Chafee Foster Care Independence Act of 1999 that emphasized the states’ responsibility to ensure that youth in foster …

Storage Stability Of Lutein During Ripening Of Cheddar Cheese, S. T. Jones, K. J. Aryana, J. N. Losso Jan 2005

Storage Stability Of Lutein During Ripening Of Cheddar Cheese, S. T. Jones, K. J. Aryana, J. N. Losso

Faculty Publications

Lutein (3,3′-dihydroxy-α-carotene) has been identified as a dietary factor that can delay the onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, available food sources of lutein contain only modest amounts of the carotenoid. Food fortification with lutein extract has been identified as a low-budget approach to prevent the onset or progression of AMD. The objectives of this study were to 1) incorporate various amounts of lutein into Cheddar cheese; 2) examine the color, pH, microbiological, and sensory characteristics of the Cheddar cheese during storage; and 3) analyze the stability of lutein during the cheese maturation process. Lutein extracted from corn was …

Foraging Behaviors Of Alouatta Palliata, Mantled Howling Monkeys, Jeffrey A. Baum Jan 2005

Foraging Behaviors Of Alouatta Palliata, Mantled Howling Monkeys, Jeffrey A. Baum

Nebraska Anthropologist

Research was conducted at the EI Zota biological field station to determine the amount and type of food processing exhibited by mantled howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata) prior to consumption. Mantled howling monkeys have been labeled as behavioral folivores with limited morphological adaptations for foliage digestion. The purpose of this study was to determine if A. palliata displayed any food manipulations and how food was selected by the species. Breakdown of the data was done to evaluate differences based on sex for these feeding and foraging behaviors. Results showed no behaviors that could be classified as manipulating food items …

Theory Of Mind In Chimpanzees: A Rationalist Approach, Benjamin Grant Purzycki Jan 2005

Theory Of Mind In Chimpanzees: A Rationalist Approach, Benjamin Grant Purzycki

Nebraska Anthropologist

The question of whether or not chimpanzees possess the ability to mentally represent others' mental states has been a popular question since Premack and Woodruff (1978) originally asked the question. It is well established that humans have a theory of mind (ToM), but extending this psychological faculty to our evolutionary cousins has created a massive amount of literature and research attempting to resolve this issue. Such a resolution is arguably not possible given the nature of the debate. An Either/Or approach to chimpanzee theory of mind both ignores the essential components of ToM as well as foreclosing on the possibility …

Postpartum Depression: An Evolutionary Perspective, Mark Tracy Jan 2005

Postpartum Depression: An Evolutionary Perspective, Mark Tracy

Nebraska Anthropologist

There is no common consensus among theorists regarding the nature and purpose of postpartum depression. Evolutionary theorists have proposed that the onset of postpartum depression is an adaptive function that signals a potential fitness cost to the mother i. e. the investment in the child will be cost more than the evolutionary benefits to be gained from rearing this child Many studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between postpartum depression and lack of paternal or social support indicating that when these two variables are absent the mother is more likely to experience postpartum depression. In this paper …

Response Of Vegetation And Endangered Waterbirds To Habitat Management Techniques At Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, James Andrew Rader Jan 2005

Response Of Vegetation And Endangered Waterbirds To Habitat Management Techniques At Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, James Andrew Rader

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Habitat selection, reproductive effort, and habitat utilization of Hawai’ian stilts (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni) and Hawai’ian coots (Fulica alai) was studied on Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge in Mau’i, Hawai’i. Nesting behavior was confirmed following management treatments on the northern shore of Kealia Pond. Nests were dispersed or randomly spaced within vegetation patches or newly created mudflat habitat. Pickleweed and makai were the dominant vegetation surrounding the nest setting and utilized for nest substrate by Hawai’ian stilts and Hawai’ian coots respectively. Mechanical control treatments were implemented through monotypic stands of pickleweed to increase interspersion of open water and promote native vegetation. …

Fattening Foods: Under Products Liability Litigation Is The Big Mac Defective?, Charles E. Cantú Jan 2005

Fattening Foods: Under Products Liability Litigation Is The Big Mac Defective?, Charles E. Cantú

Faculty Articles

Excessive consumption of fast food may produce negative results, but it does not render fast food products, like the McDonald’s Big Mac, defective. While no product is technologically perfect, and any product can cause injury, American jurisprudence has always held purveyors of defective food liable. The question is whether fattening foods, such as the Big Mac, are defective under a strict products liability theory.

The cornerstone of this cause of action requires a product to be defective, which may stem from: (1) mis-manufacturing, where the product enters the stream of commerce in an unintended condition; (2) mis-marketing, where the risks …

Feed Conversion Index In Two Populations And Two Lines Of Guinea Pigs For Meat Production, Kathia Jordán Vargas Jan 2005

Feed Conversion Index In Two Populations And Two Lines Of Guinea Pigs For Meat Production, Kathia Jordán Vargas

Theses and Dissertations

The guinea pig (Cavia aperea porcellus) is an alternative to improve human nutrition because its meat is of excellent taste and quality. Thus, it is an important nutritional source. The feed conversion index was determined under the basic (forage) and mixed (forage and concentrate) diets during the growth phase. This was done with both sexes located in the Tamborada and MEJOCUY populations, using the AUQUI, and San Luis lines. This was done in order to quantify how many kilograms of feed an animal must eat to gain one kilogram of live weight. The animals were randomly distributed into individual pools …
