Enquêtes D'Acceptation De Paiment Destinées À Déterminer Les Prix Des Produits Et Services Dans Le Domaine De La Santé De La Reproduction : Manuel De L'Utilisateur, Karen G. Fleischman Foreit, James R. Foreit

Reproductive Health

Race, Trust, Altruism, And Reciprocity, George W. Dent Jan 2005

Race, Trust, Altruism, And Reciprocity, George W. Dent

Faculty Publications

Trust, altruism and reciprocity are attracting growing attention from scholars. Interest began with psychological experiments showing that people often are altruistic, trust others, and reciprocate the benevolence of others far more than economic models of "rational" human selfishness predict. These findings inspired social scientists to discover what factors promote or hinder cooperation. Legal scholars have employed this learning to determine how the law does or could facilitate or discourage cooperation in many contexts, including business transactions and the workplace. The influence of race on cooperation has been studied in specific areas, but so far no one has considered how the …

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard Jan 2005

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

During the 1890s, people on the Mississippi River exploited mussel populations to support a thriving button industry. Within a brief time, they noticed significant declines in mussel populations, and called on the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries to save the resource. This paper discusses mussel propagation studies, techniques, and activities carried on in association with the Fairport Biological Laboratory (Iowa) from about 1908 to 1932. While scientists developed sophisticated techniques and had success in mussel propagation, changing habitat conditions in the river (caused mainly by pollution and dam construction) meant limited success in rescuing mussel stocks, while the introduction of plastic …

Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne Jan 2005

Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that biological and psychological differences between sexes contribute to the underrepresentation of women in certain fields, challenging the assumption that equal representation is always the appropriate goal. It critiques the notion that disparities necessarily indicate systemic flaws, emphasizing that freedom of choice should allow for different occupational outcomes without implying discrimination.

Phosphorus And Dairy/Beef Nutrition, Larry D. Satter, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, J. Mark Powell Jan 2005

Phosphorus And Dairy/Beef Nutrition, Larry D. Satter, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, J. Mark Powell

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Phosphorus (P), a required nutrient for all livestock, has numerous essential physiological functions in the body that include energy transfer (ATP), structure of bone, teeth, and membranes, and buffering pH changes in the rumen (salivary phosphate). Ruminants use a larger proportion of dietary P than nonruminants because rumen microbes produce phytase, the enzyme that hydrolyzes P from phytate. The majority of P in most grains is in phytate form, a P form largely unavailable to swine and poultry.

Comparison Of A Corn Silage Hybrid With High Cell-Wall Content And Digestibility With A Hybrid Of Lower Cell-Wall Content On Performance Of Holstein Cows, S. K. Ivan, R. J. Grant, D. Weakley, J. Beck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

We hypothesized that substituting a corn hybrid with high cell-wall content and high neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility (HCW) for a hybrid with lower cellwall content and lower NDF digestibility (LCW) would improve feed intake and milk production in lactating Holstein cows. There was a 3.6 percentage unit difference in NDF content and a 4.1 percentage unit difference in 30-h in vitro NDF digestion between the 2 corn hybrids. In trial 1, 40 cows (12 primiparous) ranging in milk production from 24.1 to 44.0 kg/d, following a 2- wk preliminary period, were used in a crossover design with 2-wk periods. …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is one of the most economically important diseases in preweaned calves. This study examined the health records of 45,497 calves over a 20-yr period to determine environmental and genetic factors influencing the incidence of IBK. Three data sets were analyzed with an animal model. The first data set (n = 41,986) evaluated environmental factors and genetic differences among nine purebred (Angus, Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Pinzgauer, Red Poll, and Simmental) and three composite breeds (MARC I, MARC II, and MARC III). Weaning weights of calves diagnosed with IBK were 8.9 kg lighter (P < 0.05) than weights of healthy calves. Incidence of IBK was related to age of the calf and the seasonal life cycle of the face fly (Musca autumnalis …

Mechanical Properties Of Hoof Horn, Sole Haemorrhage And Lameness In Dairy Cattle, Betina Winkler

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The present study aimed to develop a method to measure changes in the mechanical properties of the sole and white line hoof horn that should be used in vivo and to examine the hypothesis that the presence of haemorrhages in the horn would represent a weakening of the structural strength of the horn. Hoof horn samples were collected from the sole and white line areas of the hoof horn of dairy cattle. The maximum punch force, work to fracture, elastic modulus and membrane stress were measured through the use of a punch test and the elastic modulus was measured through …

Homeless Outreach Projects For Single Parent Families: What Happens To The Children?, Colleen Kasting, Sibylle Artz

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article provides an overview of the changing nature of family homelessness in the US and Canada, the current literature on homeless families and their children, and reports on a Canadian example of community-based research on family homelessness. This research shows that poverty, family violence, a history of abuse and problems with mental health and substance misuse are the dominant factors that contribute to family homelessness. The research also shows that the children of homeless families face grave risks, and makes explicit the need for immediate policy and practice initiatives to end family homelessness.
