Putting Grutter To Work: Diversity, Integration, And Affirmative Action In The Workplace, Cynthia Estlund Jan 2005

Putting Grutter To Work: Diversity, Integration, And Affirmative Action In The Workplace, Cynthia Estlund

Faculty Articles

The article discusses the affirmative action programs in the workplace in the U.S. with reference to Grutter v. Bollinger case. Affirmative action, including preferential consideration of women and people of color, undoubtedly plays some role in the hiring and promotional decisions that go into creating the diverse workforces. Affirmative action in employment and in higher education currently reaches only those who are at least "qualified" by conventional criteria, and those qualifications are virtually unattainable to many African-Americans who are caught in the deepest cycles of racial isolation and socioeconomic deprivation.

The City And The Poet, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2005

The City And The Poet, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

This article presents information on the struggle between the law and literature. Greek philosopher Plato's banishment of the poet is one of his most reviled ideas. Yet it is time to revisit his framework, which illuminates many of the contemporary debates about law and literature. Contemporary evictions of literature from law frame literature in negative particularizing terms. The temptation for those who defend literature will always be to respond with an ineradicability defense, which stretches the particularizing definition of literature into a generalizing one. The Platonic paradigm suggests that one should resist this move because it is both wrong and …

Laser Power Meter, Akinwunmi O. Odeniyi Jan 2005

Laser Power Meter, Akinwunmi O. Odeniyi

Honors Thesis

LASER- Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation - can produce a very intense and powerful beam of light that is useful in many scientific and technological fields as well as in everyday life. Laser beams can be focused to a spot a few wavelengths in diameter. In this research project, a laser power meter that measures the amount of light coming from any laser was built using a thermopile.

A thermopile is alight detector which uses the effect that the absorption of light by the material causes a change in the detector material's temperature, resulting in a voltage difference …

Design And Manufacture Of Optimum Product Structures, Murat Demircubuk Jan 2005

Design And Manufacture Of Optimum Product Structures, Murat Demircubuk

Open Access Dissertations

W. S. Hemp established an optimality criterion for designing minimum weight structures that employ materials with different strength in compression and tension following A. G. M. Michell's work. W. Prager extended the optimality criterion for designs with materials with different densities. The first part of this dissertation brings together a full set of analytical tools to generate structural layouts which satisfy these dual-material optimality conditions. Chapter 3 is concerned with methods to suppress local and global instability of least-weight structures. Perforated webs placed between structural members, structural member shape optimization and light-weight foam inserts are methods investigated in the research …

The City of Cleveland plans to create a long-term vision for industrial and commercial land reuse in order to better serve the business and neighborhood interests of its citizens. The implementation of an industrial land bank is one critical way in which to fulfill this goal. This study aimed to develop a strategy to aid the city in the operation and management of rehabilitating commercial and industrial properties for reuse. The objectives of the project were to: * Incorporate a strategy understood by senior managers at the city that identifies a broad economic redevelopment vision, especially for brownfields. * Include …

Computing Rigid Components Of Pseudo-Triangulation Mechanisms In Linear Time, Jack Snoeyink, Ileana Streinu Jan 2005

Computing Rigid Components Of Pseudo-Triangulation Mechanisms In Linear Time, Jack Snoeyink, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We investigate the problem of detecting rigid components (maximal Laman subgraphs) in a pseudotriangulation mechanism and in arbitrary pointed planar frameworks.F or general Laman graphs with some missing edges, it is known that rigid components can be computed in O(n2) time. Here we make substantial use of the special geometry of pointed pseudo-triangulation mechanisms to achieve linear time. The main application is a more robust implementation and a substantial reduction in numerical computations for the solution to the Carpenter's Rule problem given by the second author.

A Template For The Exploration Of Chaotic Locomotive Patterns, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou, Jack Heidel, E. Terry Foster

Journal Articles

Inverted pendulum and spring-mass models have been successfully used to explore the dynamics of the lower extremity for animal and human locomotion. These models have been classified as templates that describe the biomechanics of locomotion. A template is a simple model with all the joint complexities, muscles and neurons of the locomotor system removed. Such templates relate well to the observed locomotive patterns and provide reference points for the development of more elaborate dynamical systems. In this investigation, we explored if a passive dynamic double pendulum walking model, that walks down a slightly sloped surface (γγ was increased, …

Linear Correlation Discovery In Databases: A Data Mining Approach, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim Jan 2005

Linear Correlation Discovery In Databases: A Data Mining Approach, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Very little research in knowledge discovery has studied how to incorporate statistical methods to automate linear correlation discovery (LCD). We present an automatic LCD methodology that adopts statistical measurement functions to discover correlations from databases’ attributes. Our methodology automatically pairs attribute groups having potential linear correlations, measures the linear correlation of each pair of attribute groups, and confirms the discovered correlation. The methodology is evaluated in two sets of experiments. The results demonstrate the methodology’s ability to facilitate linear correlation discovery for databases with a large amount of data.

Elicited Priors For Bayesian Model Specifications In Political Science Research, Jeff Gill, Lee D. Walker Jan 2005

Elicited Priors For Bayesian Model Specifications In Political Science Research, Jeff Gill, Lee D. Walker

Faculty Publications

We explain how to use elicited priors in Bayesian political science research. These are a form of prior information produced by previous knowledge from structured interviews with subjective area experts who have little or no concern for the statistical aspects of the project. The purpose is to introduce qualitative and area-specific information into an empirical model in a systematic and organized manner in order to produce parsimonious yet realistic implications. Currently, there is no work in political science that articulates elicited priors in a Bayesian specification. We demonstrate the value of the approach by applying elicited priors to a problem …

Stratigraphy Of The Volcanic Products Around Nemrut Caldera: Implications For Reconstruction Of The Caldera Formation, Özgür Karaoğlu, Yavuz Özdemi̇r, A. Ümi̇t Tolluoğlu, Mustafa Karabiyikoğlu, Onur Köse, Jean-Luc Froger

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The volcanological development of the Nemrut stratovolcano, located near the southwestern tip of Lake Van in eastern Turkey, is subdivided into three stages: pre-caldera, post-caldera and late stages. Two ignimbrite flows have been recognized in the pre-caldera stage. The earlier of the two occurred after basaltic lavas formed along extensional fissures. The latter, which forms the main subject of this paper, was a major flow associated with the development of the Nemrut caldera. The pyroclastic deposits of the Nemrut volcano in the pre-caldera stage are divided into three phases on the basis of palaeosols that separate them. The first phase …

Alpine Metamorphism And Granitoid Magmatism In The Strandja Zone: New Data From The Sakar Unit, Se Bulgaria, Ianko Gerdjikov

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Strandja Zone is a pre-Cenomanian orogen consisting of three tectonic units: the Veleka, Strandja and Sakar units. The first two units display very low-grade Alpine metamorphism, whereas in the Sakar unit the Triassic sediments are metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies. For years this high-grade metamorphism was enigmatic and most of the metamorphic rocks were interpreted as a reworked Precambrian crust of the Rhodope. This contribution begins with a review of the recent data about the structure and evolution of the Sakar unit. Probably the most important recent finding was the demonstration of the lack of a structural break between …

Middle School Teachers' Beliefs About How They Communicate Caring And Students' Perceptions Of Their Teachers' Caring Behaviors, Cynthia D. Kainaroi Jan 2005

Middle School Teachers' Beliefs About How They Communicate Caring And Students' Perceptions Of Their Teachers' Caring Behaviors, Cynthia D. Kainaroi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was three-fold: to examine the behaviors middle school teachers use and believe communicate caring and students' perceptions of their caring behaviors; to determine if a discrepancy exists between the two; and to identify the nature of any discrepancies. Participants included 16 eighth grade teachers and 184 eighth grade students. Data were collected through the use of a teacher questionnaire and an anonymous student writing assignment. Teacher and student responses were grouped into emerging themes of caring. The methodology used in this study to analyze the results included calculating and comparing the percentage of teacher and …

Computational Technique For Improvement Of The Position-Weight Matrices For The Dna/Protein Binding Sites, Naum I. Gershenzon, Gary D. Stormo, Ilya P. Ioshikhes Jan 2005

Computational Technique For Improvement Of The Position-Weight Matrices For The Dna/Protein Binding Sites, Naum I. Gershenzon, Gary D. Stormo, Ilya P. Ioshikhes

Physics Faculty Publications

Position-weight matrices (PWMs) are broadly used to locate transcription factor binding sites in DNA sequences. The majority of existing PWMs provide a low level of both sensitivity and specificity. We present a new computational algorithm, a modification of the Staden–Bucher approach, that improves the PWM. We applied the proposed technique on the PWM of the GC-box, binding site for Sp1. The comparison of old and new PWMs shows that the latter increase both sensitivity and specificity. The statistical parameters of GC-box distribution in promoter regions and in the human genome, as well as in each chromosome, are presented. The majority …

Supreme Court Voting Behavior - 2003 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Lorianne Updike, Jacob Reynolds Jan 2005

Supreme Court Voting Behavior - 2003 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Lorianne Updike, Jacob Reynolds

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The 2003 Term, for the second year, notes a liberal trend across a majority of the Tables of this Study. The voting behavior of individual Justices in 2003 was somewhat more stable this Term in that individual departures from past voting behaviors were less pronounced than in 2002. Nevertheless, the Study still demonstrates continuing instability in the voting behavior of individual Justices. This Term, statistically significant departures from past behavior by at least five Members of the Court are present on six Tables. This might suggest that the voting behavior of the Justices on these Tables is "in transition," although …

Effect Of Genetic Variation On The Formation Of Hepatocarcinogenic Metabolites Of Trichloroethylene Using Chloral Hydrate Studies (An Interdisciplinary Approach), Apryl Bronley-Delancey Jan 2005

Effect Of Genetic Variation On The Formation Of Hepatocarcinogenic Metabolites Of Trichloroethylene Using Chloral Hydrate Studies (An Interdisciplinary Approach), Apryl Bronley-Delancey

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is listed with the EPA as a suspected human carcinogen and is ubiquitous in the environment (US EPA 1992). Chloral hydrate (CH) is a sedative drug and a cytochrome P450 (CYP 450)-derived metabolite of TCE (Klaassen 2001). Chloral hydrate is metabolized in the liver to the rodent hepatocarcinogen trichloroacetate (TCA) by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), and to the non-carcinogenic metabolite trichloroethanol (TCEOH) by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) (Klaassen 2001). Both ALDH and ADH are polymorphic in humans which can presumably predict the disposition of chloral hydrate into the carcinogenic vs. non-carcinogenic pathways. The likelihood is then raised that subpopulations of …

Quantification And Prediction Of Stream Dryness In The Interior Highlands, Justin M. Homan, Nicholas M. Girondo, Charles J. Gagen Jan 2005

Quantification And Prediction Of Stream Dryness In The Interior Highlands, Justin M. Homan, Nicholas M. Girondo, Charles J. Gagen

Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences

Although ecological studies have noted streams drying in the Interior Highlands, published measurements of streambed dryness are lacking. Clearly, stream drying has the potential to affect benthic macroinvertebrate and fish communities. In 2003, we initiated an assessment of streambed dryness for three streams in the Ouachita Mountains representative of the Central Hills, Ridges, and Valleys. In the following summer, we applied the approach to 15 similar size watersheds in three distinct ecoregions of the Interior Highlands: Ouachita Mountains-Athens Plateau, Ozark Highlands-Springfield Plateau, and Lower Boston Mountains. Repeated dryness measurements were recorded in each stream and correlated to nearby USGS stream …

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Russell County, Kentucky, T. Jeffrey Adams, Bart Davidson, Daniel I. Carey

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.
