Reflections On Language And Translation: Toward A "Translation Turn" In Archival Studies, Fiorella Foscarini Apr 2026

Reflections On Language And Translation: Toward A "Translation Turn" In Archival Studies, Fiorella Foscarini

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

As the dominant lingua franca, the English language acts as an invisible, hegemonic force that exerts a strong influence over the framing of the global world. By using English unreflexively in research, education, and professional cross-cultural exchanges, we may unwittingly support unequal power structures, the homogenization of research, and the marginalization of traditions and knowledge systems based on languages other than English. In most cases where translation is involved, the translating act is treated as a fait accompli or a mere technical process, without acknowledging that exact equivalence is impossible to achieve, and that translation has important epistemological, methodological, …

Judging A Book By Its Cover: Exploring Ethical Solutions For Marketing & Labeling Romance Novels With Illustrated Cover Art, Tricia Filbrun

Honors Projects

As social media platforms and subcommunities have driven massive sales for romance titles in the publishing industry, there has been an intense debate among literary communities, parents, and school administrators about whether the illustrated cover art style is appropriate. Some readers feel that these books are intentionally marketed towards a younger audience, and the sexually explicit nature of the content was not made clear, or labeled at all, before they read the book. This paper explores four likely marketing and labeling solutions that could be implemented to resolve this issue, and whether they are ethical by marketing and advertising standards, …

In response to prevalent cultural bias in neuropsychological testing, cross-cultural tests (CCTs) were developed for accessibility across cultures through the use of “universal” stimuli. The Multicultural Neuropsychological Scale (MUNS) is a CCT developed to be appropriate across education levels, cost-effective and capable of assessing cognitive functions. The MUNS consists of seven subtests, including the Party subtest, which measures executive functioning by instructing participants to organize a party on a map. During this activity, participants purchase items such as food while remaining mindful of a 100-coin budget and minimizing travel distance. The present study examined whether the Party subtest functions comparably …

The Elements Among Us: The Periodic Table Reimagined, Emily Burris Apr 2026

The Elements Among Us: The Periodic Table Reimagined, Emily Burris

Honors Capstones

Students often view chemistry as “too difficult to understand” or “Impossible to connect with”, we believe this is because of inability to bridge the gap between the elemental world and the physical world. This capstone sought out to answer the question “How can we make the Periodic Table easier to visualize and conceptualize”. We did this using common household items that represent each of the elements therefore taking away the negative stigma placed on the subject at hand. This project brings the Periodic Table to life through a hands-on, two and three-dimensional model using everyday objects to represent the individual …

Ai Mistakes: "Confabulation" And Abduction, Not "Hallucination", Stephen M. Mcjohn, Ian Mcjohn Apr 2026

Ai Mistakes: "Confabulation" And Abduction, Not "Hallucination", Stephen M. Mcjohn, Ian Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

"Hallucination" has become the common term for errors by AI systems, yet it implies a misleading analogy to human perception. LLM's process tokens. They do not have conscious experience or conscious perception. A hallucination is an experience, and (to our knowledge, to date) LLM's do not experience anything. This paper suggests that legal scholars follow the lead of a small number of AI researchers who have suggested that "confabulation" is a more accurate term, a metaphor grounded in psychology. People confabulate when they unknowingly invent spurious explanations or facts. We then take this terminological question and stretch it into a …

Makara Journal of Technology

This study employs the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) to identify the critical factors and their degree of relevance to the vehicle emission process. Its innovation lies in the potential to blend ambiguity and uncertainty with the established AHP. FAHP transforms information into a defuzzification state through signal-to-noise ratios, normalization, and pairwise comparison. The principal parameters considered are revenue, sold packing units, CAGR, packing materials, consumption, and CO2 emissions (A, B, C, D, E, and F, respectively). From the normalized defuzzified weight result, consumption (Parameter E) is the best (normalized weight, 0.8685917), while CO2 emissions (Parameter F) was the worst …

With the increasing prevalence of autonomous systems, the ways to control them to ensure safety remain a challenge. Control Barrier Functions (CBF) is a newly developed way of ensuring absolute safety. In this project, we explored the topic of CBF in many ways. We did a thorough literature review on the existing CBFs, including Zeroing CBF and Observer Robust CBF. We also deduce the quadratic programming problem using both single integrator and unicycle models. We then derived our definition of the bound function (M_delta) in the ISS observer. Finally, we analyzed the effect of changing bounds and plotted the figures. …

What Do Black Holes Teach Us About Wigner’S Friend?, Emily Adlam Apr 2026

What Do Black Holes Teach Us About Wigner’S Friend?, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Recently, Hausmann and Renner have pointed out that several famous paradoxes relating to black holes have a similar character to various Extended Wigner’s Friend paradoxes. In this paper I consider what the connection between these things could teach us about the Wigner’s Friend scenarios. I argue that if we take the analogy between these cases seriously, the black hole paradoxes appear to favour a certain class of response to the Wigner’s Friend scenario - specifically, those which posit intrinsic relationality, rather than effective and emergent relationality, and also those which posit some kind of retrocausality.
