Ringed And Bearded Seal Densities In The Eastern Chukchi Sea, 1999–2000, John L. Bengtson, Lisa M. Hiruki-Raring, Michael A. Simpkins, Peter L. Boveng

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Aerial surveys were conducted in 1999 and 2000 to estimate the densities of ringed (Phoca hispida) and bearded (Erignathus barbatus) seals in the eastern Chukchi Sea. Survey lines were focused mainly on the coastal zone within 37 km of the shoreline, with additional lines flown 148–185 km offshore to assess how densities of seals changed as a function of distance from shore. Satellite-linked time-depth recorders were attached to ringed seals in both years to evaluate the time spent basking on the ice surface. Haulout patterns indicated that ringed seals transitioned to basking behavior in late May …

The Status Of Diporeia Spp. In Lake Ontario, 1994- 1997, Stephen J. Lozano, Jill V. Sharold

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Surveys of benthic macroinvertebrates conducted in Lake Ontario between 1994 and 1997 revealed a recent decline in Diporeia spp. (Amphipoda) abundance. The lowest population densities and summer biomass are in the eastern basin of the lake at all depths. Densities and biomass declined in the shallowest (10-50 m) depth zone between 1994 and 1997. Mean Diporeia spp. densities declined from 1412 m-2 to 1 m-2, and the total mean biomass declined from 0.66-g DW m-2 to 0.001 g-DW m-2. The latter represents an overall loss of about 5100 mt of biomass in the shallowest …

Preliminary Evaluation Of A Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) Bioenergetics Model, Charles P. Madenjian, Stephen A. Pothoven, Philip J. Schneeberger, Daniel V. O'Connor, Stephen B. Brandt

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We conducted a preliminary evaluation of a lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) bioenergetics model by applying the model to size-at-age data for lake whitefish from northern Lake Michigan. We then compared estimates of gross growth efficiency (GGE) from our bioenergetics model with previously published estimates of GGE for bloater (C. hoyi) in Lake Michigan and for lake whitefish in Quebec. According to our model, the GGE of Lake Michigan lake whitefish decreased from 0.075 to 0.02 as age increased from 2 to 5 years. In contrast, the GGE of lake whitefish in Quebec inland waters decreased from …

Decision Support For The Career Field Selection Process At The Us Air Force Academy, Andrew P. Armacost, James K. Lowe

United States Air Force: Publications

Each year, the US Air Force Academy graduates nearly 1000 young men and women. To support the decision of which cadets will be classified into which career fields, we describe a linear programming formulation with appealing computational properties that enable it as the core of a decision support tool. We explore methods for measuring and balancing cadets' class standing, Air Force career field requirements, and cadets' career field preferences in the context of this model. Our computational experiments demonstrate the improvement of this method over previous classification approaches, yielding more than 10% increase in the number of cadets assigned to …

Geologic Studies Of The Platte River, South-Central Nebraska And Adjacent Areas—Geologic Maps, Subsurface Study, And Geologic History, Steven M. Condon

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The Platte River of south-central Nebraska was studied at three scales to place the river in its geological context and to trace its evolution through geologic time. At the largest scale the Elm Creek West and the Newark 7.5 minute quadrangles were mapped. These quadrangles are located just west and just east of Kearney and serve to illustrate the main geomorphic elements of the present Platte River Valley. The central elements of the quadrangles are the Platte River channels, islands, and bottomlands, which are flanked by terraces that step up away from the river to the north and south. Significant …

Mercury Contamination From Historical Gold Mining In California, Charles N. Alpers, Michael P. Hunerlach, Jason T. May, Roger L. Hothem

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Mercury contamination from historical gold mines represents a potential risk to human health and the environment. This fact sheet provides background information on the use of mercury in historical gold mining and processing operations in California, with emphasis on historical hydraulic mining areas. It also describes results of recent USGS projects that address the potential risks associated with mercury contamination.

Miners used mercury (quicksilver) to recover gold throughout the western United States. Gold deposits were either hardrock (lode, gold-quartz veins) or placer (alluvial, unconsolidated gravels). Underground methods (adits and shafts) were used to mine hardrock gold deposits. Hydraulic, drift, or …

Kirk Nordstrom, Lisa C. Donohoe, Andrew G. Hunt, Frederick L. Paillet, Roger H. Morin, Phillip L. Verplanck

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New Mexico Environment Department, is investigating the pre-mining ground-water chemistry at the Molycorp molybdenum mine in the Red River Valley, northern New Mexico. The primary approach is to determine the processes controlling groundwater chemistry at an unmined, off-site, proximal analog. The Straight Creek drainage basin, chosen for this purpose, consists of the same quartz-sericite-pyrite altered andesitic and rhyolitic volcanic rock of Tertiary age as the mine site. The weathered and rugged volcanic bedrock surface is overlain by heterogeneous debris-flow deposits that interfinger with alluvial deposits near the confluence of Straight Creek and …

Origin Of Secondary Sulfate Minerals On Active Andesitic Stratovolcanoes, D.R. Zimbelman, Robert O. Rye, G.N. Breit Jan 2005

Origin Of Secondary Sulfate Minerals On Active Andesitic Stratovolcanoes, D.R. Zimbelman, Robert O. Rye, G.N. Breit

Geochemistry of Sulfate Minerals: A Tribute to Robert O. Rye

Sulfate minerals in altered rocks on the upper flanks and summits of active andesitic stratovolcanoes result from multiple processes. The origin of these sulfates at five active volcanoes, Citlalte´petl (Mexico), and Mount Adams, Hood, Rainier, and Shasta (Cascade Range, USA), was investigated using field observations, petrography, mineralogy, chemical modeling, and stable-isotope data. The four general groups of sulfate minerals identified are: (1) alunite group, (2) jarosite group, (3) readily soluble Fe- and Al-hydroxysulfates, and (4) simple alkaline-earth sulfates such as anhydrite, gypsum, and barite. Generalized assemblages of spatially associated secondary minerals were recognized: (1) alunite+silica±pyrite±kaolinite±gypsum±sulfur, (2) jarosite+alunite+silica; (3) jarosite+smectite+silica±pyrite, (4) …

Auditory Brainstem Responses In The Eastern Screech Owl: An Estimate Of Auditory Thresholds, Elizabeth F. Brittan-Powell, Bernard Lohr, D. Caldwell Hahn, Robert J. Dooling

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The auditory brainstem response (ABR), a measure of neural synchrony, was used to estimate auditory sensitivity in the eastern screech owl (Megascops asio). The typical screech owl ABR waveform showed two to three prominent peaks occurring within 5 ms of stimulus onset. As sound pressure levels increased, the ABR peak amplitude increased and latency decreased. With an increasing stimulus presentation rate, ABR peak amplitude decreased and latency increased. Generally, changes in the ABR waveform to stimulus intensity and repetition rate are consistent with the pattern found in several avian families. The ABR audiogram shows that screech owls hear best between …

Basal Tissue Structure In The Earliest Euconodonts: Testing Hypotheses Of Developmental Plasticity In Euconodont Phylogeny, Xi-Ping Dong, Philip C. J. Donoghue, John E. Repetski Jan 2005

Basal Tissue Structure In The Earliest Euconodonts: Testing Hypotheses Of Developmental Plasticity In Euconodont Phylogeny, Xi-Ping Dong, Philip C. J. Donoghue, John E. Repetski

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The hypothesis that conodonts are vertebrates rests solely on evidence of soft tissue anatomy. This has been corroborated by microstructural, topological and developmental evidence of homology between conodont and vertebrate hard tissues. However, these conclusions have been reached on the basis of evidence from highly derived euconodont taxa and the degree to which they are representative of plesiomorphic euconodonts remains an open question. Furthermore, the range of variation in tissue types comprising the euconodont basal body has been used to establish a hypothesis of developmental plasticity early in the phylogeny of the clade, and a model of diminishing potentiality in …

Sulfur And Oxygen Isotopic Record In Sulfate And Sulfide Minerals Of Early, Deep, Pre-Main Stage Porphyry Cu–Mo And Late Main Stage Base-Metal Mineral Deposits, Butte District, Montana, C.W. Field, L. Zhang, J.H. Dilles, Robert O. Rye, M.H. Reed

Geochemistry of Sulfate Minerals: A Tribute to Robert O. Rye

Typical porphyry-type Cu–Mo mineralization occupies two connected domal centers, the eastern Pittsmont and western Anaconda domes, that predate and largely underlie the well-known, throughgoing, Main Stage polymetallic veins of Butte. Among the sulfur-bearing minerals recovered from deep drill core of this early pre-Main Stage hydrothermal assemblage are anhydrite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and molybdenite in veinlets bordered by K-silicate alteration, and pyrite from slightly younger quartz–pyrite veinlets with dgray-sericiticT alteration selvages. The ranges of δ34S values for minerals of the K-silicate assemblage are 9.8–18.2%◦ for anhydrite (n=23 samples), 3.0%◦ to 4.7%◦ for molybdenite (n=6), 0.4%◦ to 3.4%◦ for pyrite (n=19), …

Neighborhood Interchangeability And Dynamic Bundling For Non-Binary Finite Csps, Anagh Lal, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Eugene C. Freuder Jan 2005

Neighborhood Interchangeability And Dynamic Bundling For Non-Binary Finite Csps, Anagh Lal, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Eugene C. Freuder

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Neighborhood Interchangeability (NI) identifies the equivalent values in the domain of a variable of a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) by considering only the constraints that directly apply to the variable. Freuder described an algorithm for efficiently computing NI values in binary CSPs. In this paper, we show that the generalization of this algorithm to non-binary CSPs is not straightforward, and introduce an efficient algorithm for computing NI values in the presence of non-binary constraints. Further, we show how to interleave this mechanism with search for solving CSPs, thus yielding a dynamic bundling strategy. While the goal of dynamic bundling is …

Magneto-Optical Spectra Of Closely Spaced Magnetite Nanoparticles, Damon Allen Smith, Yu A. Barnakov, B L. Scott, S A. White, Kevin L. Stokes

Physics Faculty Publications

The Faraday rotation spectrum of composites containing magnetite nanoparticles is found to be dependent on the interparticle spacing of the constituent nanoparticles. The composite materials are prepared by combining chemically synthesized Fe

3O4 smagnetited nanoparticles s8-nm diameterd and polysmethylmethacrylated . Composites are made containing a range of nanoparticle concentrations. The peak of the main spectral feature depends on nanoparticle concentration; this peak is observed to shift from approximately 470 nm for sdilute compositesd to 540 nm concentrated . We present a theory based on the discrete-dipole approximation which accounts for

optical coupling between magnetite particles. Qualitative correlations between theoretical calculations …

Chained To The Past: An Overview Of Criminal Expungement Law In Minnesota —State V. Schultz , Jon Geffen, Stefanie Letze

William Mitchell Law Review

This article explains Minnesota’s expungement law and analyzes a recent Minnesota Court of Appeals decision that limits the expungement remedy. Specifically, this article begins by examining the effects of a criminal record and the purposes of expungement.8 An expungement’s main purpose is to seal an individual’s criminal record from public view, thereby allowing the individual to fully reintegrate into society. This article then provides an overview of current expungement law and its history. This article also explains different types of criminal records and the different mechanisms used to seal each type of record. The focus of this article is on …

Putting Grutter To Work: Diversity, Integration, And Affirmative Action In The Workplace, Cynthia Estlund Jan 2005

Putting Grutter To Work: Diversity, Integration, And Affirmative Action In The Workplace, Cynthia Estlund

Faculty Articles

The article discusses the affirmative action programs in the workplace in the U.S. with reference to Grutter v. Bollinger case. Affirmative action, including preferential consideration of women and people of color, undoubtedly plays some role in the hiring and promotional decisions that go into creating the diverse workforces. Affirmative action in employment and in higher education currently reaches only those who are at least "qualified" by conventional criteria, and those qualifications are virtually unattainable to many African-Americans who are caught in the deepest cycles of racial isolation and socioeconomic deprivation.
