Effect Of Audiocassette Presentation On The Performance Of Students With And Without Learning Disabilities On A Group Standardized Math Test, Rebecca K. Schnirman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Many students with specific learning disabilities (LD) exhibit reading difficulties that interfere with their performance on "high-stakes" standardized tests with math word problems. Therefore, it is important to identify accommodations that will lead to valid test scores. Audio presentation for math word problems is intended to remove the effects of a disability in reading. One purpose of the study was to conduct an empirical investigation of the effects of audiocassette presentation by comparing the performance of students with LD and students from general education (GE). Another was to investigate the relationship, if any, between the level of knowledge of mathematics …

Enumeration Of Lattice Paths Using Finite Operator Calculus, Katherine L B Humphreys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation discusses umbral calculus and lattice path enumeration and then continues by explicitly enumerating weighted directed lattice paths staying above a boundary using finite operator calculus. In Part I we discuss the history and representative results of the two topics. We separate umbral calculus into two fields, classical umbral calculus and finite operator calculus, and attempt to correct their intertwined histories. We discuss the beginnings of lattice path enumeration and survey the types of lattice path enumeration problems and solution methods found in the literature. In Part II, we give necessary conditions of a step set or of its …

Estimation Of The Scattering Function Of Fading Channels For Acoustic Communications In Shallow Waters, Vincent. Allemand Jan 2005

Estimation Of The Scattering Function Of Fading Channels For Acoustic Communications In Shallow Waters, Vincent. Allemand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The measurement of the Scattering function of time-variant fading channels is of strong interest in the field of underwater acoustic communications, as it indicates the limitations of the channel capacity. It also helps reducing the development time of acoustic communication systems and the need for on-site tests using so-called "fading simulators". The Scattering function is interpreted as the expected power received at a given time-delay and frequency shift for a given signal transmitted through the acoustic channel. It has been estimated using a fourth-moment method developed by Kailath from 18 to 30 kHz, 8-ms broad-band chirps and 20--28 kHz, 28-ms …

Gopher Tortoise Habitat Use And Spatial Distribution In A Southeastern Florida Population, E. H. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Gopher tortoise ecology is poorly understood in the rapidly developing, urbanized southeastern end of its range. This study reports on a population at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. Burrow surveys were conducted from May to July 2003 and May to August 2004. Burrows were marked and mapped as was vegetative cover. Burrow locations were tested against vegetative cover height and soil types. Burrow locations did not differ among soil types. The densest concentrations of burrows were located in areas of low, patchy vegetative cover. This is consistent with known gopher tortoise habitat preferences elsewhere in their range. Gopher …

Graphical Windows(C)-Based Cable And Underwater System Simulation Software, Baudreuil Jean De Jan 2005

Graphical Windows(C)-Based Cable And Underwater System Simulation Software, Baudreuil Jean De

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Underwater systems behavior prediction has become an important success factor in the design and implementation of marine systems. Most marine systems involve cables for mooring, deployment, recovery, or towing; however, estimating the response of these systems is difficult because of their non-linear behavior. Thus, numerical models are used to simulate submerged cabled systems. At FAU, many mission specific cable simulations have been developed, but no single, all encompassing software package exists. This thesis develops a Windows(c) based software package to quickly and easily create FEA models of underwater cabled systems and simulate their response. The model is based on a …

Study On Glucose Metabolism: Computer Simulation And Modeling, Meta. Leesirikul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Sorensen's model of glucose metabolism and regulation is reconstructed using SimulinkRTM. Most of the existing glucose metabolism models consist of several mass balance equations that interact with each others. Graphical format used by SimulinkRTM provides a visualized perspective of such relations so that it is easier to modify the model on ad hoc basis. Type-I and Type-II diabetes with relevant clinical details are simulated. Further, a control strategy is introduced in order to simulate the control of exogenous insulin pump. Simulated results are consistent with available clinical data. Living systems in general, exhibit both stochastical and deterministic characteristics. Activities such …

Teacher Perspectives On The Effect Of The Florida Public Accountability System On The Middle School Classroom, Helen Roberts Jan 2005

Teacher Perspectives On The Effect Of The Florida Public Accountability System On The Middle School Classroom, Helen Roberts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Florida Public Accountability System and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, FCAT, have been in use since 1996. Since that time, schools have received grades, rewards and sanctions for performance, promotion requirements have changed, and the results of the FCAT are published annually for public scrutiny. With testing required in grades 3 through 11, middle schools (grades 6--8) must test all the students in their schools. A literature review revealed that, although achievement studies, drop out studies, and other data had been analyzed, little research focused on the impact of the FCAT from the perspective of the classroom teacher. This …

Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Multisensory Integration As A Coupled Dynamical System, Collins G. Assisi Jan 2005

Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Multisensory Integration As A Coupled Dynamical System, Collins G. Assisi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Perception and behavior are mediated by a widely distributed network of brain areas. Our main concern is, how do the components of the network interact in order to give us a variety of complex coordinated behavior? We first define the nodes of the network, termed functional units, as a strongly coupled ensemble of non-identical neurons and demonstrate that the dynamics of such an ensemble may be approximated by a low dimensional set of equations. The dynamics is studied in two different contexts, sensorimotor coordination and multisensory integration. First, we treat movement coupled to the environment as a driven functional unit. …

Isotopic Tracers As Evidence Of Denitrification In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Eben J. Spencer Jan 2005

Isotopic Tracers As Evidence Of Denitrification In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Eben J. Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

The Karlsruhe Aquifer of north-central North Dakota has experienced considerable nitrate contamination sparking an investigation by the North Dakota State Water Commission. Certain portions of the aquifer have experienced nitrate-N concentrations of up to seven times the drinking water standard. Although contamination is evident it is possible the NO₃¯ is naturally being eliminated by denitrification, whereby bacteria reduce NO₃¯ to nitrogen gas. Evidence of denitrification may be illustrated by accelerated reduction of NO₃¯ relative to the conservative tracer Cl¯ coupled with an increase in the heavy isotopes of 15N and 18O within the NO₃¯ ion. Such an increase is not …

A Template Functional-Gage Design Using Parameter-File Table In Autodesk Inventor, Cheng Lin, Moustafa Moustafa

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

A systematic approach using Autodesk Inventor to design the functional gages of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) is presented. The gages can be used to check straightness, angularity, perpendicularity, parallelism, and position tolerances of a part when geometric tolerances are specified with Maximum Material Condition (MMC). Four steps are proposed to accomplish the task: (1) creation of two-dimensional (2-D) initial template files, (2) generation of hierarchical folders for the template files, (3) creation a 3-D gage model from a specific template file, and (4) dimensioning and generation of the gage drawing. Results show that, by following this approach, students can …
