Coyote Steals Fire, Northwest Band Shoshone Nation Jan 2005

Coyote Steals Fire, Northwest Band Shoshone Nation

All USU Press Publications

"Coyote was tired of being cold," says this traditional Shoshone tale about the arrival of fire in the northern Wasatch region.

Members of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation developed the concept for this retelling in collaboration with book arts teacher Tamara Zollinger. Together, they wrote and illustrated the book.

Bright watercolor-and-salt techniques provide a winning background to the hand-cut silhouettes of the characters. The lively, humorous story about Coyote and his friends is complemented perfectly by later pages written by Northwestern Shoshone elders on the historical background and cultural heritage of the Shoshone nation.

Discord And Direction: The Postmodern Writing Program Administrator, Sharon James Mcgee, Carolyn Handa Jan 2005

Discord And Direction: The Postmodern Writing Program Administrator, Sharon James Mcgee, Carolyn Handa

All USU Press Publications

Postmodernism's central moves include questioning hierarchy, valuing paratactic associations, and rejecting grand narratives, and the work of a Writing Program Administrator, most days, includes those moves as well. The argument of this collection is that the cultural and intellectual legacies of postmodernism impinge, significantly and daily, on the practice of the Writing Program Administrator. WPAs work in spaces where they must assume responsibility for a multifaceted program, a diverse curriculum, instructors with varying pedagogies and technological expertise—and where they must position their program in relation to a university with its own conflicted mission, and a state with its unpredictable views …

Refiguring Prose Style: Possibilities For Writing Pedagogy, T. R. Johnson, Thomas Pace Jan 2005

Refiguring Prose Style: Possibilities For Writing Pedagogy, T. R. Johnson, Thomas Pace

All USU Press Publications

For about two decades, say Johnson and Pace, the discussion of how to address prose style in teaching college writing has been stuck, with style standing in as a proxy for other stakes in the theory wars. The traditional argument is evidently still quite persuasive to some—that teaching style is mostly a matter of teaching generic conventions through repetition and practice. Such a position usually presumes the traditional view of composition as essentially a service course, one without content of its own. On the other side, the shortcomings of this argument have been much discussed—that it neglects invention, revision, context, …

Maine Stream: A Bibliographical Reception Study Of Sarah Orne Jewett, Kathrine Cole Aydelott Jan 2005

Maine Stream: A Bibliographical Reception Study Of Sarah Orne Jewett, Kathrine Cole Aydelott

Sarah Orne Jewett: Bibliography

The critical reception of Sarah Orne Jewett has oscillated dramatically over the last century. Contemporary reviews praised her as a writer whose appreciation for and deep understanding of New England and its people transcended local concerns and brought sympathetic, realistic depictions of Maine to the far coasts of the United States and Europe. Literary critics from the 1930s and 1940s, however, stereotyped Jewett as "an old-fashioned local colorist" whose writing was too simplistic to warrant critical attention. Since the 1970s, however, and particularly thanks to feminist literary critics, Jewett has been rediscovered and is now well reestablished in the canon …

Political Agency And The Classroom: Reading John Dewey And Judith Butler Together., Sarah M. Stitzlein Jan 2005

Political Agency And The Classroom: Reading John Dewey And Judith Butler Together., Sarah M. Stitzlein

Education

In Toronto last year, several PES members joined a panel session to discuss “agency after Foucault.” Many philosophers of education, in the wake of Foucault and other recent poststructuralists, often struggle to make sense of agency, intention, and the individual subject, particularly within social justice education. Some participants in this session and others challenged certain assumptions about human subjects as autonomous, self-made, efficacious agents of social and political change, many of which were held by the pragmatists whose work largely began and continues to influence our field. In many cases, the views of pragmatists and poststructuralists are stubbornly opposed to …

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu Jan 2005

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu

English

This essay looks at the values attributed or denied to "culture" (medical culture, history, Southeast Asian refugees, Asian American cultural citizenship) in the care surrounding a Hmong child diagnosed with spirit loss, according to Hmong interpretation, or epilepsy, as defined by Western medicine. In my reading of Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures, medical, colonial, and authorial knowledge often converge in devastating ways, linking the seemingly disparate discourses of war, refugee medicine, and the model minority through colonial representations. I also look at the …

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2005

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs are able to manage their businesses within relatively contained and familiar geographical and cultural circles. With a world economy shrinking every day amid a flood of digital information, today’s entrepreneur is increasingly confronted with opportunities to consider new ways to secure vendors and recruit customers. Many unfamiliar possibilities emerge. Should the entrepreneur venture beyond “comfortable” surroundings to consider international connections? Specifically, what about China? How practical is this fetching business temptation of larger markets and lower-cost subcontractors? What are the social, trade, financial, and political issues? Should a “China strategy” be a true entrepreneurial offensive, or rather a …

Genre Across The Curriculum, Anne Herrington, Charles Moran Jan 2005

Genre Across The Curriculum, Anne Herrington, Charles Moran

All USU Press Publications

American first-year college writing courses operate without a powerful context: they are designed to teach academic writing, but what kind of academic writing? Which of the many particular discourses, and, within those discourses, which recurring social situations? Lacking a clear context to refer to, textbook authors inevitably privilege form. Genre across the Curriculum will function as a "good" textbook, one not for the student, but for the teacher, and one with an eye on the context of writing. Here you will find models of practice, descriptions written by teachers who have integrated the teaching of genre into their pedagogy in …

Using Action Research To Determine And Resolve Team Issues For Courseware Developers, Manley G. Morgan Jan 2005

Using Action Research To Determine And Resolve Team Issues For Courseware Developers, Manley G. Morgan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A department consisting of four teams of courseware developers and instructors had been experiencing a lack of team cohesiveness as evidenced by the exclusion of individuals and unwillingness to support group goals. Using action research, a collaborative team was formed and data collected using surveys, interviews and observations. The results of the data were fed back to the collaborative team for data analysis. A week long team training session was held that provided for interpretation and clarification of courseware editing procedures. Team structure and location were also modified to allow for closer communications with the customer/supplier.

Document Retrieval, Automatic, Elizabeth D. Liddy Jan 2005

Document Retrieval, Automatic, Elizabeth D. Liddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Document Retrieval is the computerized process of producing a relevance ranked list of documents in response to an inquirer’s request by comparing their request to an automatically produced index of the documents in the system. Everyone uses such systems today in the form of web-based search engines. While evolving from a fairly small discipline in the 1940s, to a large, profitable industry today, the field has maintained a healthy research focus, supported by test collections and large-scale annual comparative tests of systems. A document retrieval system is comprised of three core modules: document processor, query analyzer, and matching function. There …

Hands-On Nlp For An Interdisciplinary Audience, Elizabeth D. Liddy, Nancy Mccracken Jan 2005

Hands-On Nlp For An Interdisciplinary Audience, Elizabeth D. Liddy, Nancy Mccracken

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The need for a single NLP offering for a diverse mix of graduate students (including computer scientists, information scientists, and linguists) has motivated us to develop a course that provides students with a breadth of understanding of the scope of real world applications, as well as depth of knowledge of the computational techniques on which to build in later experiences. We describe the three hands-on tasks for the course that have proven successful, namely: 1) in-class group simulations of computational processes; 2) team posters and public presentations on state-of-the-art commercial NLP applications, and; 3) team projects implementing various levels of …

Using Photography To Cross Generational, Linguistic, And Cultural Barriers To Develop Useful Survey Instruments., Ian Newman, Suree Kanjanawong Jan 2005

Using Photography To Cross Generational, Linguistic, And Cultural Barriers To Develop Useful Survey Instruments., Ian Newman, Suree Kanjanawong

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Photographs are used as a research tool by anthropologists and as a technique to empower special populations, advocacy groups, and policymakers. This case describes how photography was used to develop a survey to study alcohol expectancies among Thai adolescents. A multicultural research team faced generational, linguistic, and cultural barriers in understanding Thai adolescent alcohol use well enough to write useful questions about alcohol expectancies. Asking adolescents to take and then discuss their photographs about alcohol allowed them to express themselves without the imposition of an organizational framework by the investigators. Group discussions of the photographs revealed nuances and subtleties of …

Meteor-S Wsdi: A Scalable P2p Infrastructure Of Registries For Semantic Publication And Discovery Of Web Services, Kunal Verma, Kaarthik Sivashanmugam, Amit P. Sheth, Abhijit Patil, Swapna Oundhakar, John Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web services are the new paradigm for distributed computing. They have much to offer towards interoperability of applications and integration of large scale distributed systems. To make Web services accessible to users, service providers use Web service registries to publish them. Current infrastructure of registries requires replication of all Web service publications in all Universal Business Registries. Large growth in number of Web services as well as the growth in the number of registries would make this replication impractical. In addition, the current Web service discovery mechanism is inefficient, as it does not support discovery based on the capabilities of …

Developing An Educational Portfolio And Survey For The New Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center : A Capstone Project ..., Tera Farnsworth

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Environmental interpretation allows people to gain an understanding of their surroundings, know why the environment is important and to have a greater appreciation for the environment as a whole. By creating a visitors center in Santa Cruz the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary would like to create educational programs for the public and students to make people more environmentally aware. The overall goal for my project was to compile a database of informal science education centers in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas, compile a database of schools in Santa Cruz County and use this information to aid in the …
