Naval Power In The Twenty-First Century, Peter Dombrowski

Newport Papers

This anthology of articles from the quarterly, the "Naval College Review," is divided into three sections. The first section introduces the changing security environment facing the United States and, by extension, the U.S. Navy. The articles examine both the external position of the nation and the emerging internal political and institutional contexts that constrain military and naval policies and decision making. The second section looks specifically at the roles and missions of the Navy at the beginning of the 21st century. Its articles cover both long-standing issues, such as forward presence, and the new missions the Navy has assumed in …

Is Regime Change Enough For Burma? The Problem Of State Capacity, Neil A. Englehart

Political Science Faculty Publications

The U.S. and the EU employ sanctions to encourage regime change in Burma. This policy ignores serious problems of state capacity that impede a transition to democracy and would plague any transitional regime. Engagement with the current regime on issues of state capacity would improve the chances for a transition.

Assay Development For Stachybotry’S Identification, Michelle L. Davis

Theses (Pre-2016)

Pyrosequencing is a new DNA sequencing method relying on the sequencing-bysynthesis principle and bioluminometric detection of nucleotide incorporation events. The objective of this thesis is to design a protocol for the improvement of the identification of fungi and mold samples in the outdoors and in enclosed environments. Fungi (mold) and bacteria are naturally present in both indoor and outdoor environments. Pyrosequencing method has been introduced as an alternative detection. Efforts are currently shifting from structural to functional genomics, in which the related functions of genomic sequences are being studied. An· application of this is in determination of potential toxicity of …

A Study Of Pneumothorax Rates For Physician Assistants Inserting Central Venous Catheters At A Large Urban Hospital, Theresa Cox, Thomas Parish, Robert Zane Reasoner Jul 2005

A Study Of Pneumothorax Rates For Physician Assistants Inserting Central Venous Catheters At A Large Urban Hospital, Theresa Cox, Thomas Parish, Robert Zane Reasoner

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Physician Assistants (PAs) are frequently delegated the task of performing invasive procedures. While there is a nearly 40 year record of PAs performing procedures of various types, limited published information is available that verifies the safety of delegating these medical responsibilities. As the scope of practice expands for the PA profession, research data will be necessary to document the safety and effectiveness of PAs performing invasive procedures. This prospectivestudy followed 9 PAs inserting central venous catheter (CVC) lines in pulmonary critical care and cardiothoracic surgery settings in a large urban hospital from June 1, 2002 through December 1, 2002. Each …

The Impact Of Classroom Environment On Student Learning, Amy A. Turano Jul 2005

The Impact Of Classroom Environment On Student Learning, Amy A. Turano

Theses and Dissertations

Classroom environment is a concern among almost all educators. This thesis discusses the four major factors of classroom environment: physical environment, time and instructional management, behavior management, and teacher effectiveness. A goal of this study is to contribute to teacher knowledge about how classroom environments impact student learning. A resource center and a first grade classroom were observed and the teachers of both classes were asked to complete a self-evaluation of their classroom's environment. Both teachers were found to have classroom environments that were conducive to learning.

College Marketing And The Academic Structure: Incompatibility?, Thomas J. Kopp, Joseph L. Rosetti Jul 2005

College Marketing And The Academic Structure: Incompatibility?, Thomas J. Kopp, Joseph L. Rosetti

Essays in Education

This paper examines how the consumer model of education has challenged the academic structure in higher education. Through modeling the interaction of institutional structures and the move to treat students as consumers, forces that promote the decay of academic standards are identified. The article then explores how modification of current structures to facilitate development of a student as “partner in production” model of education can inoculate the academic system and promote student learning. It also suggests why the move by accrediting bodies to require outcomes assessment will not improve learning outcomes until the faculty evaluation, tenure criteria, and student performance …

The Social Integration Of Latino Newcomer Students In Midwestern Elementary Schools: Teacher And Administrator Perceptions, Catherine Lasso, Nelson Soto Jul 2005

The Social Integration Of Latino Newcomer Students In Midwestern Elementary Schools: Teacher And Administrator Perceptions, Catherine Lasso, Nelson Soto

Essays in Education

Midwestern communities have experienced rapid influxes of Latino immigrants in recent years. Public schools in areas that were previously white and monolingual are now challenged to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. There is a substantial body of research on the academic needs of Hispanic immigrants, especially in terms of English language instruction. However, little is known about how these newcomer children are adjusting socially at school. The purpose of this study is to explore teacher and administrator perceptions of Latino student social integration, which is conceptualized as how these children interact with their U.S. born peers …

Prolegomenon To An Intellectual History Of Administrative Law In The Twentieth Century: The Case Of John Willis And Canadian Administrative Law, Michael Taggart Jul 2005

Prolegomenon To An Intellectual History Of Administrative Law In The Twentieth Century: The Case Of John Willis And Canadian Administrative Law, Michael Taggart

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The intellectual legal history-the history of ideas--of modern administrative law has yet to be written. The first part of this article suggests that one way to approach this necessary task is to posit the writings of leading administrative law thinkers in the context of cases, controversies, doctrines, events, and movements throughout the twentieth century. The work of pioneer administrative lawyer John Willis is used to exemplify this type of contextualized intellectual legal history. The second part of this article seeks to gauge Willis's influence on the development of Canadian administrative law.

The Gendered Dimensions Of Social Insurance For The "Non-Poor" In Canada, Stephanie Ben-Ishai Jul 2005

The Gendered Dimensions Of Social Insurance For The "Non-Poor" In Canada, Stephanie Ben-Ishai

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article emerges from an exploration of the meanings of consumer bankruptcy in the current context of Canadian society, as well as the role consumer bankruptcy plays in shaping this context. Examining consumer bankruptcy through the lens of gender relations, the claim is made that Canadian consumer bankruptcy legislation, policies, practices, and accompanying discourses are implicated in the causation and perpetuation of the conditions of marginalization and subordination endured by women who experience long-term poverty. These women are affected not only in terms of access to the bankruptcy system, but also by the broader implications of the delivery of consumer …

Valuation Effects Of Earnings Restatements Due To Accounting Irregularities, Tan Xu Jul 2005

Valuation Effects Of Earnings Restatements Due To Accounting Irregularities, Tan Xu

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation studies three financial topics using earnings restatement data. In the first topic, we discriminate between the market efficiency hypothesis and the underreaction hypothesis by examining their predictions on the stock performance of restating firms in the post-announcement period. Three approaches are used, namely, the cumulative abnormal return (CAR), buy-and-hold abnormal return (BHAR), and calendar time portfolio approaches. Consistent with the market efficiency hypothesis, we do not find significant abnormal performance in the post-restatement period. In the second topic, we test the extrapolation model (LSV, 1994) by examining the relationship between stock price reaction to earnings restatement and the …

Assessment And Social Construction: Conflict Or Co-Creation?, R. Iversen, Kenneth J. Gergen, R. Fairbanks Ii Jul 2005

Assessment And Social Construction: Conflict Or Co-Creation?, R. Iversen, Kenneth J. Gergen, R. Fairbanks Ii

Psychology Faculty Works

Assessment procedures in social work emerged within the historical context of modernist empiricism. They are lodged in assumptions of objectivity, measurement accuracy, value neutrality and scientific expertise. Within the context of postmodern constructionism, the grounds for traditional assessment are thrown into question. While such critique may seem to threaten the assessment tradition, such a conclusion is unwarranted. Rather, one may locate within the assessment tradition and constructionist writings converging lines of thought. Through the collaborative extension of two assessment exemplars—the genogram and the ecomap—we suggest new and more promising potentials for assessment practices in social work.

Domestic Violence And The Danger Of Joint Custody Presumptions, Judith G. Greenberg Jul 2005

Domestic Violence And The Danger Of Joint Custody Presumptions, Judith G. Greenberg

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article points out that the current trend towards joint custody as the preference or presumption in divorces can create some unwanted side-effects. Specifically, joint custody is dangerous for victims of spousal abuse because it allows, and sometimes even facilitates, the continuation of patterns of abuse. Although many jurisdictions that apply a joint custody presumption attempt to protect victims of domestic violence, neither of the two usual approaches is successful in protecting the victims and their children. As a result, the author makes two recommendations. First, statutes should never create a presumption in favor of joint custody. Second, courts should …

The American Law Institute Principles Of Family Dissolution, The Approximation Rule And Shared-Parenting, Marygold S. Melli Jul 2005

The American Law Institute Principles Of Family Dissolution, The Approximation Rule And Shared-Parenting, Marygold S. Melli

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article discusses the ALl Principles of Family Dissolution which proposes a default rule to determine child custody when parents cannot agree. That rule, known as the Approximation Rule, requires the court to allocate child custody so that the amount of time that the child spends with each parent approximates the proportion of time each parent spent in child care during the marriage. This article explains the background for the choice of the rule and faults the ALl for not explicitly recognizing that the rule may in effect be a proposal for shared parenting.

Service Encounters: The Missing Link Between Service Quality Perceptions And Satisfaction, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta Jul 2005

Service Encounters: The Missing Link Between Service Quality Perceptions And Satisfaction, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, Subhash Mehta

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Relationship marketing emphasizes that for a firm to be profitable, it must be attentive to those factors that affect service satisfaction. Extant research in the service sector reveals two important determinants of service satisfaction. One is service quality, and the other is the service encounter, representing the interaction between the customer and the service provider. Further, it has been demonstrated that service quality is also related to customer perceptions of the service encounter. However, a question that a remains unanswered is about the precise nature of the relationship between service quality and service encounter on one hand, and service satisfaction …
