Objectives Orth odontic uptake among adolescents appears to increase in Thai society. The purposes of this research were to assess the rate of fixed orthodontic treatment experiences among first-year students at Chulalongkorn University (CU) and to identify its associating factors. Materials and methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a stratified-clustered sample of 800 first-year CU students. About 635 completed questionnaires were returned, giving a 79.4% response rate. Results Approximately 32.8 % of subjects experienced fixed orthodontic treatment; divided into 20.6% with orthodontic treatment completed, 8.5% with undergoing orthodontic treatment, and 3.6% with orthodontic treatment discontinued. There were significant relationships …

Objectives To explore the relations of the positions of impacted mandibular third molar and the operation time to the complications after surgical removal of the impaction. Materials and methods Before surgery, all biostatistic data of the patients and radiographic assessment of the impacted tooth were recorded. From 84 healthy patients, 98 impacted teeth were surgically removed by the dental students in the fifth or the sixth year under a careful supervision of one oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The starting time was recorded at the commencement of an incision and the completion time when the gauze being bitten by the patient. …

In 1994, following the filming of Schindler's List, many survivors of the Nazi Holocaust came forward to offer their stories. Realizing that time was running out to document these personal histories, film director Steven Spielberg established the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation (SVHF). In late 2003, the U-M University Library initiated contact with the SVHF with the goal of bringing access to the Video History Archive to the U-M campus.

Psychometric Assessment Of The Comprehensive Effects Of Alcohol Questionnaire: Comparing A Brief Version To The Original Full Scale, Lindsay S. Ham, Sherry H. Stewart, Peter J. Norton, Debra A. Hope
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The current set of studies compared the psychometric properties of the original Comprehensive Effects of Alcohol Questionnaire (CEOA) to a 15-item version (B-CEOA) in a nonclinical undergraduate sample (N = 581), and attempted to replicate and extend the B-CEOA findings in an undergraduate sample referred to an alcohol intervention (N = 734). Psychometric assessment included construct validity, internal consistency, and concurrent validity, using both “positive” and “negative” expectancy items in all analyses. Results provided further support for the empirical validity of the original CEOA, and provided support for the use of the B-CEOA despite the reduction in the …

An Interview With Richard Louv, Michael F. Shaughnessy
An Interview With Richard Louv, Michael F. Shaughnessy
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Richard Louv has written a beautifully provocative book entitled Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. Richard Louv believes that nature is an integral part of growing up, and that children need to be exposed to nature, the wilderness, trees, grass, the sky, and the beauty of the earth, forests, mountains, lakes, rivers and streams. In this interview, he discusses his book and his concerns.
Thoreau’S Legacy Revisited, Charles Yaple
Thoreau’S Legacy Revisited, Charles Yaple
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
It appears we humans are slow to learn some lessons. Recent, and greatly deserved, attention given to Richard Louv’s new book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature- Deficit Disorder (see book review, p. 19) prompts one to recall prophetic words penned by Henry David Thoreau more than 140 years ago. He had much to say concerning what happens when a culture divorces itself from nature.
