Environmental Impacts Of Technological Change In Bangladesh Agriculture: Farmers' Perceptions, Determinants, And Effects On Resource Allocation Decisions, S Rahman Jan 2005

Environmental Impacts Of Technological Change In Bangladesh Agriculture: Farmers' Perceptions, Determinants, And Effects On Resource Allocation Decisions, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article measures the impact of modern technology adoption in raising farmers' environmental awareness and the impact of farmers' environmental awareness on resource use by utilizing survey data from 21 villages in three agro‐ecological regions of Bangladesh. The econometric analysis is based on the application of the Tobit model explaining farmers' environmental awareness in the first stage and a profit function examining environmental awareness and resource use relationships in the second stage. Results reveal that the “level” and “duration” of involvement with modern technology raises farmers' environmental awareness, and that farmers' environmental awareness reduces resource use including chemicals. Farmers, who …

The Value Of Institutions And The Values Of Free Speech, Dale Carpenter Jan 2005

The Value Of Institutions And The Values Of Free Speech, Dale Carpenter

Articles

Should the First Amendment pay attention to the setting in which speech occurs, giving more protection to some institutions than to others? The very suggestion is a heresy. The First Amendment, to a degree unknown elsewhere in American law, has been characterized by a certain kind of blindness. It has largely been blind to the popularity of the speech involved, blind to whether the speech is favored or disfavored by the government, and blind to the identity of the speaker. On the other hand, some institutions - the professional media, libraries, and universities, for example - are especially good at …

Bad Arguments Against Gay Marriage, Dale Carpenter Jan 2005

Bad Arguments Against Gay Marriage, Dale Carpenter

Articles

This article claims that three common arguments against gay marriage - the definitional, procreation, and slippery-slope arguments - are quite bad, the worst of the lot. The definitional argument asserts that marriage just is the union of one man and one woman, and that the definition alone is a sufficient defense against claims for gay marriage. The procreation argument claims that marriage's central public purpose is to encourage procreation, and so the exclusion of same-sex couples is justified. The slippery-slope argument claims that the acceptance of same-sex marriage logically entails the acceptance of other public policy changes - notably the …

Investigating The Optimum Lower Energy Threshold Of A New Research Pet/Ct Scanner, Osama Mawlawi, John W. Wilson, Tinsu Pan, Timothy G. Turkington

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation of the optimum 3D lower energy threshold (LET) setting of the Discovery-RX, a new LYSO based GE research PET/CT scanner is conducted. Sensitivity and noise equivalent count rate (NECR) performance of the scanner in 3D mode were evaluated at multiple LET settings: 400, 425, 450, 460, 470 and 480 KeV. The performance evaluations were conducted according to the NEMA NU2-2001 standard. In addition, the NECR was also evaluated for the same LET settings using the Data Spectrum whole body phantom in order to more accurately simulate a true clinical setting. For the sensitivity measurements, the line source was …
