How Unobservable Productivity Biases The Value Of A Statistical Life, Thomas J. Kniesner, W. Kip Viscusi, James P. Ziliak, Christopher Woock Sep 2005

How Unobservable Productivity Biases The Value Of A Statistical Life, Thomas J. Kniesner, W. Kip Viscusi, James P. Ziliak, Christopher Woock

Economics - All Scholarship

A prominent theoretical controversy in the compensating differentials literature concerns unobservable individual productivity. Competing models yield opposite predictions depending on whether the unobservable productivity is safety-related skill or productivity generally. Using five panel waves and several new measures of worker fatality risks, first-difference estimates imply that omitting individual heterogeneity leads to overestimates of the value of statistical life, consistent with the latent safety-related skill interpretation. Risk measures with less measurement error raise the value of statistical life, the net effect being that estimates from the static model range from $5.3 million to $6.7 million, with dynamic model estimates somewhat higher.

Year 12 Subjects And Further Study., Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

LSAY Briefing Reports

The subjects studied in the senior secondary years have a significant influence on the educational and career options available to young people when they leave school, over and above other factors. They also represent an outcome of previous school and other experiences, which shapes interests, proficiencies and decisions about careers. One perspective on subject uptake in the senior secondary years focuses on changes over time in participation in particular areas of study. A second perspective looks at differences between students enrolled in various subjects. Survey data such as those derived from LSAY are needed to monitor the associations between subject …

Looking Beyond The Shipyard: Economic Development Challenges Of Southern Maine And Seacoast New Hampshire, Charles S. Colgan

Regional Studies

The threatened closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has spurred an intense examination of the future economic prospects for York County, Maine and Rockingham County, New Hampshire. This report provides the first integrated analysis of the shipyard’s effects on both the Maine and New Hampshire economies. The shipyard accounts for more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs across the two-state region. Over 80% of these jobs are in York County, with an additional 10% in Rockingham County and the balance spread through the rest of Maine and New Hampshire. The total jobs associated with the shipyard account for 3.5% of …

Poverty, Race And The Contexts Of Achievement: Examining Educational Experiences Of Children In The American South, Maryah Stella Fram, Julie Miller-Cribbs, Lee Van Horn

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper reports findings of a study examining child-, classroom-, and school-level factors that effect academic achievement among public school children in the South. Using ECLS-K data, we compare and contrast the learning environments in high/low minority and high/low poverty schools. A sizeable minority of Southern children attend schools that are race and/or class segregated; on multiple dimensions these schools are less desirable than are schools attended by more privileged children, and children attending these schools have lower levels of academic achievement. Results from 3-level random intercepts models show that a range of child and family factors, as well as …

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) alters both concentrations of neurotransmitters or their metabolites and functional activity of central nervous system regions dysregulated in mood disorders. An open trial has suggested efficacy.

Methods: This 10-week, acute, randomized, controlled, masked trial compared adjunctive VNS with sham treatment in 235 outpatients with nonpsychotic major depressive disorder (n = 210) or nonpsychotic, depressed phase, bipolar disorder (n = 25). In the current episode, participants had not responded adequately to between two and six research-qualified medication trials. A two-week, single-blind recovery period (no stimulation) and then 10 weeks of masked active or …

Pathways From School To Further Education Or Work : Examining The Consequences Of Year 12 Course Choices, Sue Thomson Sep 2005

Pathways From School To Further Education Or Work : Examining The Consequences Of Year 12 Course Choices, Sue Thomson

LSAY Research Reports

Particular subjects or subject combinations are traditionally more likely to act as gateways to higher education or to vocational education and training, while other combinations are more likely to lead to the workforce or perhaps to unemployment. In general, tertiary or vocational qualifications facilitate the transition to work, and graduates earn significantly more than those who enter the workforce directly from school. However, some groups of students are less likely to participate in further education and training, including low achievers and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The literature has pointed to differences in curriculum participation according to background variables such …

Hanford 100-Bc Reactor Area Cleanup, Columbia Riverkeeper, John R. Brodeur, Greg Debruler Sep 2005

Hanford 100-Bc Reactor Area Cleanup, Columbia Riverkeeper, John R. Brodeur, Greg Debruler

Columbia Riverkeeper

This review was conducted as a part of a review of the cleanup work at several DOE facilities, including Hanford, Savannah River, Oak Ridge and Idaho National Engineering Laboratory.

The original intent of this multiple-site review was to assess whether the DOE’s current cleanup strategy will protect groundwater, and whether the DOE will restore the groundwater to its high- est beneficial use (in most cases, the Drinking Water Standard [DWS]). We sought to review and describe the groundwater contamination issues at these sites; assess the cleanup approach for the contamination; and critically examine, evaluate and explain the effectiveness of the …

Comparison Of Affymetrix Genechip Expression Measures, Rafael A. Irizarry, Zhijin Wu, Harris A. Jaffee

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Affymetrix GeneChip expression array technology has become a standard tool in medical science and basic biology research. In this system, preprocessing occurs before one obtains expression level measurements. Because the number of competing preprocessing methods was large and growing, in the summer of 2003 we developed a benchmark to help users of the technology identify the best method for their application. In conjunction with the release of a Bioconductor R package (affycomp), a webtool was made available for developers of preprocessing methods to submit them to a benchmark for comparison. There have now been over 30 methods compared via the …

Targeted Complement Inhibition By C3d Recognition Ameliorates Tissue Injury Without Apparent Increase In Susceptibility To Infection, Carl Atkinson, Hongbin Song, Bo Lu, Fei Qiao, Tara A. Burns, V. Michael Holers, George C. Tsokos, Stephen Tomlinson

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Previous studies indicate a pivotal role for complement in mediating both local and remote injury following ischemia and reperfusion of the intestine. Here, we report on the use of a mouse model of intestinal ischemia/ reperfusion injury to investigate the strategy of targeting complement inhibition to sites of complement activation by linking an iC3b/C3dg-binding fragment of mouse complement receptor 2 (CR2) to a mouse complement-inhibitory protein, Crry. We show that the novel CR2-Crry fusion protein targets sites of local and remote (lung) complement activation following intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury and that CR2- Crry requires a 10-fold lower dose than …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 2005, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the fourteenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.
