Optimizing Mine Action Policies And Practice, Alan Bryden Sep 2005

Optimizing Mine Action Policies And Practice, Alan Bryden

Global CWD Repository

Landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) affect communities and individuals long after conflicts end and therefore have a profound effect on opportunities for post-conflict peacebuilding. In the immediate post-conflict phase the presence, or simply the threat, of landmines can hamper refugee return and the implementation of humanitarian assistance programmes. They pose a long-term social, economic and environmental threat that denies the use of fertile land and access to water and affects flows of people, goods and services. There is also an important security risk from abandoned explosive ordnance stockpiles or caches which, if not properly secured or destroyed following the end …

Harambee House, Inc.

This report provides an overview of the fundamentals and field applications of in situ bioremediation in contaminated soil and groundwater. Bioremediation has been presented to the impacted communities as a technology that is currently being used and tested at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The primary focus this report explain bioremediation as a clean-up technology and analyze what role the technology will play in the new accelerated clean up strategy at SRS as approved by Environmental Management at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The objective is to understand how bioremediation is being used at SRS for clean up.

The Human Eye Position Control System In A Rehabilitation Setting, Yvonne Nolan, Ted Burke, C. Boylan, Annraoi De Paor

Articles

Our work at Ireland’s National Rehabilitation Hospital involves designing communication systems for people suffering from profound physical disabilities. One such system uses the electro-oculogram, which is an (x,y) system of voltages picked up by pairs of electrodes placed, respectively, above and below and on either side of the eyes. The eyeball has a dc polarisation between cornea and back, arising from the photoreceptor rods and cones in the retina. As the eye rotates, the varying voltages projected onto the electrodes drive a cursor over a mimic keyboard on a computer screen. Symbols are selected with a switching action derived, for …

Microarrays, or gene chips, are transforming the way that gene expression is measured by allowing us to determine the expression of thousands of genes from a sample. This gives immense power to examine gene expression on a global scale within individual animals and between animals. The scope for analysing complex animal functions at the molecular level is within our grasp. Relatively few studies have examined complex behaviours and correlated them with gene expression in the central nervous system. Here, we review the use of microarray technology in the dissection of behaviour and focus specifically on dominance status. A cDNA library …

Political Science

This study examines a homeless social movement organization - Shelter Now - that is attempting to influence policy and empower homeless people in a small California city Interviews with Shelter Now leaders, service providers, and city and county policymakers explore the role of Shelter Now in city politics. Specifically, I analyze Shelter Now's political organizing strategies and tactics, its relationships with elites, and the outcomes of its efforts to change local homeless policy. By considering Shelter Now's activities through the lens of social movement theory, I suggest that assessing the group's victories and its defeats serves to sharpen our sense …
