The Wto Constitution: Tertiary Rules For Intertwined Elephants, Joel P. Trachtman
ExpressO
Constitutions have many dimensions. These dimensions include at least the following:
• an economic constitution in the sense of a set of rules for exchange of value and authority,
• an interfunctional constitution that allows for the integration of various social values,
• a political constitution that reflects the cultural and democratic integrity of a group of people,
• a legal and judicial constitution that provides rules for the making of other rules, and for determining supremacy and the scope of judicial application of rules,
• a human rights constitution that limits the sphere of governmental authority, and
• a …

Taxol-Stabilized Microtubules Can Position The Cytokinetic Furrow In Mammalian Cells, Katie Shannon, Julie C. Canman, C. Ben Moree, Jennifer S. Tirnauer, Edward D. Salmon
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
How microtubules act to position the plane of cell division during cytokinesis is a topic of much debate. Recently, we showed that a subpopulation of stable microtubules extends past chromosomes and interacts with the cell cortex at the site of furrowing, suggesting that these stabilized microtubules may stimulate contractility. To test the hypothesis that stable microtubules can position furrows, we used taxol to rapidly suppress microtubule dynamics during various stages of mitosis in PtK1 cells. Cells with stabilized prometaphase or metaphase microtubule arrays were able to initiate furrowing when induced into anaphase by inhibition of the spindle checkpoint. In these …

The Frat Volume 103 Number 03 July, August & September 2005, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)
2001-2006
The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Typos get attention--negative attention--like a blemish on the tip of your nose on prom night. But there is a difference between our blemishes and our typos: while our blemishes may seem more prominent to us than to others, our eyes usually slip right past our own typos. This column presents some techniques for detecting and correcting these errors.

Kalispel Tribal Health Survey - 2005, Kalispel Tribe Of Indians, Gregory Debruler, Darren Holmes, Fred Nussbaum
Kalispel Tribe of Indians
The Tribal Health Survey was designed to enable the Tribe to better understand the overall health of the Kalispel tribal community and how it may have been affected by releases from the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. The goal was to create a baseline of disease prevalence among Kalispel Tribal members.
The Kalispel Tribe has no disease registry or other means of knowing the possible impacts to the health of the tribe from exposures to environmental contaminants. Knowledge of patterns of dis- eases will allow the tribe to create an Environmental Health Program that will be better able to service the health …
Inquiry-Based Environments For The Inclusion Of Students With Exceptional Learning Needs, Whitney Rapp
Inquiry-Based Environments For The Inclusion Of Students With Exceptional Learning Needs, Whitney Rapp
Education Faculty/Staff Publications
A qualitative study of children's museums' successful inquiry-based learning environments is described, focusing on four students with various exceptional learning needs. Benefits for the students in terms of scaffolded instruction, meaningful and contex-tualized activities, self-regulated learning, the establishment of learning communities, play, and parental involvement are noted. A discussion of the generalization of learning to the classroom and of positive attitudes and children's museums as inclusive, supplemental environments is included, Implications for future practice involve school-museum partnerships and individualized programming for all learners. Mixture Cure Survival Models With Dependent Censoring, Yi Li, Ram C. Tiwari, Subharup Guha
Mixture Cure Survival Models With Dependent Censoring, Yi Li, Ram C. Tiwari, Subharup Guha
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A number of authors have studies the mixture survival model to analyze survival data with nonnegligible cure fractions. A key assumption made by these authors is the independence between the survival time and the censoring time. To our knowledge, no one has studies the mixture cure model in the presence of dependent censoring. To account for such dependence, we propose a more general cure model which allows for dependent censoring. In particular, we derive the cure models from the perspective of competing risks and model the dependence between the censoring time and the survival time using a class of Archimedean …
Semiparametric Normal Transformation Models For Spatially Correlated Survival Data, Yi Li, Xihong Lin
Semiparametric Normal Transformation Models For Spatially Correlated Survival Data, Yi Li, Xihong Lin
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
There is an emerging interest in modeling spatially correlated survival data in biomedical and epidemiological studies. In this paper, we propose a new class of semiparametric normal transformation models for right censored spatially correlated survival data. This class of models assumes that survival outcomes marginally follow a Cox proportional hazard model with unspecified baseline hazard, and their joint distribution is obtained by transforming survival outcomes to normal random variables, whose joint distribution is assumed to be multivariate normal with a spatial correlation structure. A key feature of the class of semiparametric normal transformation models is that it provides a rich …
Inference On Survival Data With Covariate Measurement Error - An Imputation-Based Approach, Yi Li, Louise Ryan
Inference On Survival Data With Covariate Measurement Error - An Imputation-Based Approach, Yi Li, Louise Ryan
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We propose a new method for fitting proportional hazards models with error-prone covariates. Regression coefficients are estimated by solving an estimating equation that is the average of the partial likelihood scores based on imputed true covariates. For the purpose of imputation, a linear spline model is assumed on the baseline hazard. We discuss consistency and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators, and propose a stochastic approximation scheme to obtain the estimates. The algorithm is easy to implement, and reduces to the ordinary Cox partial likelihood approach when the measurement error has a degenerative distribution. Simulations indicate high efficiency and robustness. …

The Optimal Discovery Procedure For Large-Scale Significance Testing, With Applications To Comparative Microarray Experiments, John D. Storey, James Y. Dai, Jeffrey T. Leek
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
As much of the focus of genetics and molecular biology has shifted toward the systems level, it has become increasingly important to accurately extract biologically relevant signal from thousands of related measurements. The common property among these high-dimensional biological studies is that the measured features have a rich and largely unknown underlying structure. One example of much recent interest is identifying differentially expressed genes in comparative microarray experiments. We propose a new approach aimed at optimally performing many hypothesis tests in a high-dimensional study. This approach estimates the Optimal Discovery Procedure (ODP), which has recently been introduced and theoretically shown …

Encouraging Moderation In State Policies On Collecting Food Stamp Claims, David A. Super
Faculty Scholarship
Regulations issued by the Food and Nutrition Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture in July 2000 promote efficient and effective food stamp claims collection by the states. These regulations give states significant flexibility in tailoring their procedures on filing claims. States can incorporate waiver and compromise policies that increase efficiency and can serve low-income households.
