Understanding The Cost Of The War Against Iraq And How That Realization Can Affect International Law, David Allen Larson Oct 2005

Understanding The Cost Of The War Against Iraq And How That Realization Can Affect International Law, David Allen Larson

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critiques the U.S. invasion of Iraq, arguing that its legality under international law is highly questionable due to the lack of Security Council authorization and its deviation from the U.N. Charter's provisions on the use of force. It also highlights the staggering financial and human costs of the war, emphasizing that the funds spent on the invasion could have addressed critical domestic and global challenges such as healthcare, education, and poverty. The article advocates for greater U.S. compliance with international law and encourages readers to reconsider the allocation of resources to achieve more equitable and ethical outcomes.

A Mathematical Approach To Benefit-Detriment Analysis As A Solution To Compulsory Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals Under The Trips Agreement, Vishal Gupta Oct 2005

A Mathematical Approach To Benefit-Detriment Analysis As A Solution To Compulsory Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals Under The Trips Agreement, Vishal Gupta

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note proposes a mathematical approach to benefit-detriment analysis as a solution to the challenges posed by compulsory licensing of pharmaceuticals under the TRIPS Agreement. The core argument is that a socio-economic framework, comparing the monetary detriment to pharmaceutical companies (D) with the aggregate societal benefit (H x C), where H is the average health benefit per person and C is the number of affected citizens, can provide a balanced and objective method to determine when compulsory licenses should be granted. This approach aims to address the "Paragraph 6 problem" and improve access to essential medicines in developing countries while …

Russia And Nato: Increased Interaction In Defense Research And Technology, Donald C. Daniel, Michael I. Yarymovych Oct 2005

Russia And Nato: Increased Interaction In Defense Research And Technology, Donald C. Daniel, Michael I. Yarymovych

Defense Horizons

As a member of both the Partnership for Peace and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)–Russia Council (NRC), Russia enjoys remarkable status in an alliance formed principally to counter Soviet aggression. Active participation in one additional element of NATO—the Research and Technology Organization (RTO)—would offer unique opportunities to enhance relationships and mutual security. The RTO is the largest organization of its type in the world, has an extremely active program of work, and is eager to work with Russia.

Enhanced cooperation between NATO and Russia in defense-related research and technology would not be easy. Mistrust is an obstacle, as is …

The Effect Of The Hiv/Aids Epidemic On Africa's Truck Drivers, Christopher Kribs, Melanie Lee, Christine Roman, Shari Wiley, Carlos M. Hernandez-Suarez Oct 2005

The Effect Of The Hiv/Aids Epidemic On Africa's Truck Drivers, Christopher Kribs, Melanie Lee, Christine Roman, Shari Wiley, Carlos M. Hernandez-Suarez

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

The AIDS epidemic is having a growing impact on the transport sector of the economy of sub-Saharan Africa, where long-distance truck drivers are at an increased risk of infection due to their frequent contacts with com- mercial sex workers. The spread of AIDS in the transport industry is especially signi¯cant to the economy, as truck drivers are largely responsible for trans- porting crops and supplies needed for daily subsistence. In this paper we analyze these e®ects via two models, one employing a switch and the other a Verhulst saturation function, to describe the rate at which new drivers are recruited …

A Review Of The Literature On Evidence-Based Practice In Physical Therapy, Joe Schreiber, Perri Stern Oct 2005

A Review Of The Literature On Evidence-Based Practice In Physical Therapy, Joe Schreiber, Perri Stern

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The term “evidence-based practice” (EBP) has become ubiquitous in physical therapy practice. Since the mid 1990s, over 70 articles have been published in the physical therapy literature relating to EBP. Many physical therapists agree with the notion that scientific evidence should be utilized to guide practice decisions. However, for physical therapy clinicians, there are numerous barriers to EBP. Also, there appears to be a disconnect between academia and clinical practice in terms of the utilization of research evidence to inform clinical decision making. The purpose of this review of the literature is to begin to elucidate and address some of …

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

In 2003, The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, New York University Division of Nursing, convened an expert panel to explore the potential for developing recommendations for the caseloads of advanced practice nurses (APNs) in nursing homes and to provide substantive and detailed strategies to strengthen the use of APNs in nursing homes. The panel, consisting of nationally recognized experts in geriatric practice, education, research, public policy, and long-term care, developed six recommendations related to caseloads for APNs in nursing homes. The recommendations address educational preparation of APNs; average reimbursable APN visits per day; factors affecting APNs caseload …

Outsourcing And Collective Bargaining: A "Win-Win" For Employers And Employees, Shelby Silverman Oct 2005

Outsourcing And Collective Bargaining: A "Win-Win" For Employers And Employees, Shelby Silverman

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note argues that the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) framework effectively promotes negotiation over outsourcing decisions, aligning with Congress's intent to foster industrial peace through collective bargaining. Despite challenges in modern labor markets, the legal framework encourages mutual negotiation, driven by uncertainty and the desire to avoid disputes.

Mechanism Of Cd11b Down-Regulation From Phorbol Myristate Acetate Stimulated Polymorphonuclear Neutrophils, Khalil A. Aziz Oct 2005

Mechanism Of Cd11b Down-Regulation From Phorbol Myristate Acetate Stimulated Polymorphonuclear Neutrophils, Khalil A. Aziz

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of CD11b down-regulation in phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) stimulated polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). METHODS: Purified PMN were stimulated with PMA in the presence, or absence, of various enzyme inhibitors. Following stimulation, PMN CD11b expression was examined by flow cytometry and Western-blotting. The entire work was carried out at Liverpool University between the period of 1998 and 2001. RESULTS: Stimulation of PMN with PMA induced the down-regulation of CD11b by a mechanism involving a combination of an oxidant and a serine protease; most likely the primary granule derived elastase. CONCLUSION: The present study shows for the first …
