Linking Demographic Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation Across Landscapes To Continental Source-Sink Dynamics, P. Lloyd, Thomas E. Martin, R. L. Redmond, U. Langner, M. M. Hart Oct 2005

Linking Demographic Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation Across Landscapes To Continental Source-Sink Dynamics, P. Lloyd, Thomas E. Martin, R. L. Redmond, U. Langner, M. M. Hart

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Forest fragmentation may cause increased brood parasitism and nest predation of breeding birds. In North America, nest parasitism and predation are expected to increase closer to forest edges because the brood-parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird(Molothrus ater) and generalist nest predators often enter the forest from adjoining developed (largely agricultural) habitats. Yet the abundance of brood parasites and nest predators at the patch scale may be strongly constrained by the total area of developed habitat at landscape scales. The scale and extent of landscape effects are unclear, however, because past studies were mostly conducted within local landscapes rather than across independent landscapes. We …

A Systematic, Reliable Approach To Play Assessment In Preschoolers, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls Oct 2005

A Systematic, Reliable Approach To Play Assessment In Preschoolers, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls

Psychology Faculty Publications

Play assessment is gaining attention as a measure of the developing skills of young children. The procedures and methods of coding child behaviours vary considerably across researchers and practitioners. Because of this, definitive statements about the use of play assessment cannot be made without further research. The present study is an attempt to report a set of standardized procedures for play assessment along with an empirically based coding scheme (PIECES). The reliability of this system of play assessment is also investigated. High inter-observer reliability was found along with moderate test–retest correlations for both the typically developing (r = 0.48) and …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Multi-wavelength Near-Infrared (NIR) Tomography was utilized in this study to non-invasively quantify physiological parameters of breast tumors using direct spectral reconstruction. Frequency domain NIR measurements were incorporated with a new spectrally constrained direct chromophore and scattering image reconstruction algorithm, which was validated in simulations and experimental phantoms. Images of total hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water, and scatter parameters were obtained with higher accuracy than previously reported. Using this spectral approach, in vivo NIR images are presented and interpreted through a series of case studies (n=6 subjects) having differing abnormalities. The corresponding mammograms and ultrasound images are also evaluated. Three of six …

Book Ownership And Authorial Identity: Reconstructing The (Im)Personal Library Of Arthur Hugh Clough, Patrick G. Scott

Faculty Publications

Describes the different evidence that survives for the personal libraries owned by two Victorian poets, Alfred Tennyson and Arthur Hugh Clough, and discusses the ways in which such book-ownership is (and is not) usable as evidence about the author's thought and writing. This paper was originally presented at the North American Victorian Studies Association Conference, Charlottesville, VA, October 1, 2005.

Association Between Lower Extremity Posture At Contact And Peak Knee Valgus Moment During Sidestepping: Implications For Acl Injury, Scott G. Mclean, Xuemei M. Huang, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Oct 2005

Association Between Lower Extremity Posture At Contact And Peak Knee Valgus Moment During Sidestepping: Implications For Acl Injury, Scott G. Mclean, Xuemei M. Huang, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background. Knee valgus load during sports movement is viewed as an important predictor of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury risk, particularly in females. Formulating movement strategies that can reduce valgus loading during these movements therefore appears pertinent to reducing anterior cruciate ligament injury rates. With this in mind, the current study examined the relationship between peak valgus moment and lower extremity postures at impact during a sidestep cutting task.

Methods. Ten male and ten female NCAA athletes had initial contact three-dimensional hip, knee and ankle angles and subsequent knee valgus moment quantified during the execution of (n=10 trials) …

Cs 410/610: Theoretical Foundations Of Computing, Thomas Sudkamp Oct 2005

Cs 410/610: Theoretical Foundations Of Computing, Thomas Sudkamp

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

This course is an introduction to one of the fundamental topics in the theory of computer science: computability theory. Computability theory is concerned with determining whether there is an algorithmic solution to a problem. The study of computability uses the Turing machine as the basic computational model. A Turing machine is a random access, read-write, finite state automaton. The Church-Turing thesis asserts that any problem that can be solved in any algorithmic manner can be solved by a Turing machine.

Cs 415: Social Implications Of Computing, Leo Finkelstein

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

CS 415 is a communication skills course using as its subject matter current salient issues associated with the social implications of computing. In addition to the course text, you will need to use certain reading materials in the library and elsewhere, and you will be responsible for using concepts and theories provided in class lectures and discussions. The goal of this course is to blend social implications issues with common technical communication formats you'll need to be familiar with out in the "real world." To do this, the course is built around a research project on a social implications topic …

Feminism And The Art Of Interpretation: Or, Reading The First Wave To Think About The Second And Third Waves, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Cory, my daughter, accuses me of having no thoughts of my own. I was talking with Jeremy [“Cory, what do you call him? partner? significant other? boyfriend?” “Mom, I just call him Jeremy.” Alright, then.]. Jeremy asked why I was an almost pacifist. Without even breathing, I launched into Addams’s arguments for pacifism, fully attributed to her, of course. That’s when Cory accused me of having no thoughts of my own. So, if I have no thoughts of my own, inhabiting Addams’s thoughts is not a bad substitute.

Remembering how Addams viewed much of her work as interpreting American institutions …
