The Gurgitators, Scott Gage
The Gurgitators, Scott Gage
LSU Master's Theses
Hardy Runyan, an obese dishwasher from Louisiana, seeks to become a champion gurgitator through the guidance of Trina Hicks, a coach of competitive eating who’s starving to reclaim her former glory. Armed with a stunted gag reflex and a stomach he can stretch to the skin, Hardy eats his way toward a showdown in which he dethrones the world champion of oyster eating.
Skepticism About Contextualism, William Galloway Osborne Iii
Skepticism About Contextualism, William Galloway Osborne Iii
LSU Master's Theses
Contextualism is the epistemological thesis that holds context to significantly affect the truth value of claims such as “S knows that p.” A shift in context can lead to a shift in the standards by which we evaluate propositional knowledge claims, and thus a shift in the truth values of these claims: a statement “S knows that p” may be true when evaluated in one context while simultaneously false when evaluated in another context. A contextualist says it is by playing on these shifting standards that the skeptic manages to destroy knowledge with her skeptical arguments. Once this is understood, …

Analysis Of The Talus And Calcaneus Bones From The Poole-Rose Ossuary: A Late Woodland Burial Site In Ontario, Canada, Adrienne Elizabeth Penney
LSU Master's Theses
This study reports on the demography and osteological profile of the Poole-Rose Ossuary. Excavated in 1990 under the direction of Heather McKillop and at the request of the Alderville First Nation, the Poole-Rose Ossuary is a Late Woodland burial site in southern Ontario, Canada. Lack of European artifacts in the burial suggests that this site predates European contact. The Poole-Rose Ossuary is radiocarbon dated to A.D. 1550 ± 50 years. The skeletal remains were commingled. This ossuary likely represents the mass re-burial known as the “Feast of the Dead” or the “Kettle.” For the most part, closely related individuals were …

The focus of the research is the outdoor environment on a college campus. The Louisiana State University campus was selected as a case study. The survey was developed and tested to better understand how people perceive their surroundings and to incorporate the findings of perception of safety to improve design and planning decisions for the LSU campus. The criteria for a safe design was …
Rhetoric, Form, And Sovereignty In Schubert's "Prometheus," D. 674, Erica Brady Angert
Rhetoric, Form, And Sovereignty In Schubert's "Prometheus," D. 674, Erica Brady Angert
LSU Master's Theses
Franz Schubert's "Prometheus," D. 674 (1819), sets a free-verse dramatic monologue by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in which Prometheus, the Titan who presented fire and hope to mankind, declares himself independent from Zeus. This song belongs to a small group of Schubert's Lieder that resemble scenes from operas more than tonally-closed art songs. The paper discusses some of Schubert's compositional influences in the vocal genre, including Johann Friedrich Reichardt, who composed an earlier setting of the same "Prometheus" text. This paper explores the rhetorical structure of Goethe's text, which follows Quintilian's model for an effective argument, and which Schubert punctuates …
Castle To Condo, Country To Corporation: What Becomes Of Hamlet In Almereyda's Modern World, Melissa Trosclair Daigle
Castle To Condo, Country To Corporation: What Becomes Of Hamlet In Almereyda's Modern World, Melissa Trosclair Daigle
LSU Master's Theses
This paper looks into the inner workings of Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000). Even though Almereyda updates the setting and cuts many of the lines, sometimes entire scenes, from the source text, he is able to convey the some of the themes through his use of technology and media. While some themes do transfer into the postmodern setting, the places of discord are most interesting. Of particular interest is his use of modern technologies to display the corruption found in Shakespeare's play. These technologies, including speakerphone, surveillance equipment, wiring devices, handheld camcorders, and still photography, create an atmosphere of both continual …
Insect Colonization Of Child-Sized Remains And Delay Of Post Mortem Interval: An Exploratory Study In The Behavioral Analysis Of Pig Carcasses Via 24 Hour High Resolution Video Surveillance, Abigail L. Gremillion
Insect Colonization Of Child-Sized Remains And Delay Of Post Mortem Interval: An Exploratory Study In The Behavioral Analysis Of Pig Carcasses Via 24 Hour High Resolution Video Surveillance, Abigail L. Gremillion
LSU Master's Theses
This research was designed to document the decompositional and behavioral patterns and activities of arthropods colonizing child-sized remains, as observed by field sampling and 24-hour, high resolution video surveillance. The purpose of this research was to test the relationship between delays in arthropod colonization of child-sized remains and climatic conditions. Between March and June 2004, the remains of two child-sized pigs (approximately 11 kilograms) were deposited in an isolated wooded region in a suburban area of Virginia. The sites were secluded, approximately 83 yards from any dwellings. The pigs were placed on the surface: one was clothed, the other was …
Remote Power Delivery For Hybrid Integrated Bio-Implantable Electrical Stimulation System, Venkat Reddy Gaddam
Remote Power Delivery For Hybrid Integrated Bio-Implantable Electrical Stimulation System, Venkat Reddy Gaddam
LSU Master's Theses
Bio-implantable devices such as heart pacers, gastric pacers and drug-delivery systems require power for carrying out their intended functions. These devices are usually powered through a battery implanted with the system or are wired to an external power source. In this work, a remote power delivery system (RPDS) is considered as a means to charge rechargeable batteries that power a Bio-implanted Electrical Stimulation System (BESS). A loosely coupled inductive power transmitter and receiver system has been designed to recharge batteries for a bio-implanted gastric pacer. The transmitter coil is periodically worn around the waist. The receiver coil, rechargeable batteries, battery-charging …

Evaluation Of Lutein And Protein In Ozone Treated Corn, Yu Wang
LSU Master's Theses
The present study was conducted to determine the influence of an ozonation process on lutein and protein in clean and contaminated corns. This study aimed (1) to determine the levels of antimutagenic compounds to aflatoxin in corn before and after ozonation; (2) to verify the antimutagenic potential of these compounds against aflatoxin using the Ames test; and (3) to evaluate proteins in the corn before and after ozonation. HPLC was used to separate and identify the lutein in corn. Nitrogen analysis and SDS-PAGE were used to analyze protein content and molecular weights in corn. Clean ozone-treated corn had a total …
An Investigation Into A French Fifteenth-Century Book Of Hours, Mary Dawes
An Investigation Into A French Fifteenth-Century Book Of Hours, Mary Dawes
LSU Master's Theses
A Books of Hours refers to a personal prayer book that was used by the laity, rather than the clergy. The laity's version of these texts is often accompanied by enchanting illuminations. Although the text and subject matter of the images within each codex remain similar, no two Books of Hours are alike. In the Middle Ages the popularity of Books of Hours was such that today they form the largest extant category of illuminated manuscripts. This thesis concentrates on one particular manuscript: a yet uncatalogued Book of Hours that is currently within the collection of Louisiana State University's Hill …

A Compilation Of Homologous Cancer-Related Genes In Humans And Dogs, Julie Susan Brown
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study was to find out if spontaneously arising point mutations occurred in canine e-kit and if these mutations contributed to the development of mast cell tumors in dogs. Specimens were collected from 11 dogs after tumors had been surgically removed or the dog had died. The e-kit DNA was amplified using PCR, and the previously established point mutations were searched for (London et al., 1999). The point mutations found in human mast cell lines were not detected in the canine e-kit DNA, but new mutations were observed. These new mutations, observed in 50% of the tumors, …

Faculty Scholarship
Only a small percentage of deep-water reefs have had their benthic and fish resources characterized. This study surveyed eight deep-water, high-relief, hard-bottom sites off south Florida using human occupied submersibles to characterize habitat and describe the fish and macrobenthic communities: the Naples deep-water sinkhole on the southwest Florida shelf, Jordan and Marathon deep-water sinkholes on the Pourtalès Terrace, and five high-relief bioherms on the Pourtalès Terrace. These submersible dives were the first to enter and explore any of these features. The upper sinkhole rims ranged from 175 to 461 m in depth and had a maximum relief of 180 m. …
Controlling Executive Power In The War On Terrorism, Mark V. Tushnet
Controlling Executive Power In The War On Terrorism, Mark V. Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
How does - or should - the U.S. Constitution regulate the exercise of power in response to threats to national security, to ensure that power is used wisely? s Broadly speaking, two mechanisms of control are available: a separation-of-powers mechanism and a judicial-review mechanism. Both mechanisms aim to ensure that the national government exercises its power responsibly - with sufficient vigor to meet the nation's challenges, but without intruding on protected liberties. Under the separation-of-powers mechanism, nearly all of the work of regulating power is done by the principle that the President can do only what Congress authorizes. Its primary …

The Effect Of Color On Viewers’ Ratings Of Paintings, Donald J. Polzella, Stephanie H. Hammar, Chad W. Hinkle
The Effect Of Color On Viewers’ Ratings Of Paintings, Donald J. Polzella, Stephanie H. Hammar, Chad W. Hinkle
Psychology Faculty Publications
Sixty college students rated digitized facsimiles of 20 paintings on 12 semantic differential scales. The paintings represented two classes of content, landscape and portrait, and two styles, traditional and modern. Half the participants viewed the paintings in color, half in black and white. Removing color from portraits increased their perceived pleasantness and beauty and reduced tension. In contrast, removing color from landscapes reduced their perceived beauty. It is argued that for landscapes color may provide a critical channel for transmitting increased amounts of information such as depth. For portraits, color can be superfluous or even distracting.

CCPO Publications
Otolith chemistry has been successfully used to reconstruct the environmental history experienced by estuarine-dependent teleost fish, including movement between estuaries and coastal areas. However, application has been more limited in species exposed exclusively to oceanic waters, where gradients in physical and chemical properties are less extreme. To test whether otolith elemental signatures record spatial information in an oceanic species, we sampled otoliths from Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) and used an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) coupled to a laser ablation system to target the outer otolith edges corresponding to the period immediately before capture. Using multivariate analysis …

Beyond 'Hot Lips' And 'Big Nurse': Creative Writing And Nursing, Sandra Young
English Faculty Publications
This essay describes a special topics creative writing course designed for nursing students, and argues that creative writing strategies work to improve nurses' compositional skills. Also discussed are other potential benefits from creatively writing patients' lives, notably, the blending of arts and sciences, and the ways in which medical schools are encouraging their students to study the humanities, especially literature and creative writing. The essay includes student creative writing samples.
The essay also discusses the depiction of nurses in popular culture. M*A*S*H*, Richard Hooker’s black comedy about the antics of doctors and nurses during the Korean War, gave us “Hot …
The Teaching Of Harmony And Composition In The French Conservatoire In The Nineteenth Century - The Importance And Influence Of Reicha And Fétis, Gloria Toplis
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
In 1818 Antoine Reicha was appointed teacher of counterpoint at the École Royale de Musique et de Déclamation. He was joined in 1821 by F-J. Fétis. At the time of their appointment each of these two composers brought to the École an established reputation as a teacher and a philosophy of teaching well considered, though the ideas and the musical repertoire which each called upon in his teaching differed from that of the other and of the teachers of composition of longstanding whom they joined at the École. Reicha and Fétis are rarely discussed in the same context. Fétis, from …

Citizen Standing To Enforce Anti-Cruelty Laws By Obtaining Injunctions: The North Carolina Experience, William A. Reppy Jr.
Animal Law Review
North Carolina law authorizes citizen standing for the enforcement of anti-cruelty laws, thus supplementing criminal prosecution by means not used in any other state. Citizens, cities, counties, and animal welfare organizations can enforce animal cruelty laws through a civil injunction. This article explores the various amendments to North Carolina’s civil enforcement legislation and the present law’s strengths and weaknesses. The Author suggests an ideal model anti-cruelty civil remedies statute.

Long-Term Outcomes In Animal Hoarding Cases, Colin Berry, Gary Patronek, Randall Lockwood
Animal Law Review
Animal hoarding is a form of abuse that affects thousands of animals each year, yet little is known about how cases are best resolved, the effectiveness of prosecution, and how sentences relate to the severity of the offense. This lack of information has hampered effective resolution and the prevention of recidivism. This study obtained information about the hoarder, animals, charges, prosecution, sentencing, and recidivism for fifty-six cases identified through media reports.
International Animal Rights: Speciesism And Exclusionary Human Dignity, Kyle Ash
International Animal Rights: Speciesism And Exclusionary Human Dignity, Kyle Ash
Animal Law Review
The primary goal of this paper is to act as a heuristic device, to suggest an unconventional but practical perspective on the evolution of international law. Upon surveying discourse on the history of international law, texts of treaties, and declarations and writings of influential philosophers of law and morality, an antiquated perspective of humanity is apparent. A convention in international law, and a reflection of a common idea which feeds the foreboding trend of how humans relate to the planet, treats humanity as distinctively separate from the Earth’s biodiversity. Though environmental law is beginning to recognize the necessity of conserving …
Chinese Endangered Species At The Brink Of Extinction: A Critical Look At The Current Law And Policy In China, Charu Sharma
Chinese Endangered Species At The Brink Of Extinction: A Critical Look At The Current Law And Policy In China, Charu Sharma
Animal Law Review
The People’s Republic of China harbors a vast number of plant and animal species, but those species have long been threatened by a thriving illegal trade. China became a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in 1981 and has since passed a number of wildlife protection laws and regulations in an effort to curb the illegal trade and begin revitalizing some of its nearly-extinct animal populations. This article critically examines China’s legislation and judicial decisions, concluding that much work remains to be done to protect endangered species in China.
Caging Animal Advocates' Political Freedoms: The Unconstitutionality Of The Animal And Ecological Terrorism Act, Andrew N. Ireland Moore
Caging Animal Advocates' Political Freedoms: The Unconstitutionality Of The Animal And Ecological Terrorism Act, Andrew N. Ireland Moore
Animal Law Review
The animal advocacy movement is facing another obstacle, resulting from the creation of the Animal and Ecological Terrorism Act (AETA). The Act seeks to create harsh penalties including a Terrorist Registry for acts performed by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and ALF-type actors. In addition, the proposed legislation will affect animal advocates not involved with the ALF. However, the model legislation, as written, must pass Constitutional scrutiny. This paper argues that the proposed Animal and Ecological Terrorism Act is unconstitutional due to its infringement on the First Amendment, its overbreadth, and its vagueness.
