Cancer progression is a complex multi-step process. Two critical steps in tumor growth and invasion: are the proteolytic processing of the extracellular matrix environment and the angiogenic switch enabling blood supply into the tumor. VEGF is a major regulator of both physiological and pathological neovascularization thus, considered as an important factor for the initiation of angiogenesis. The aims of the current study were to determine whether VEGF mRNA insitu expression, has any significant correlation with various histopathological parameters during colorectal adenocarcinoma progression and its correlation with metastatic potency. Accordingly, 35 colorectal adenocarcinoma paraffin embedded sections prepared from Iraqi patients, in …

Determination Of Heavy Elements Levels In Blood Of Children With Anemia Living At Al- Najaf City., Rasha S. Nima, Maha A. Al-Shamri, Mustafa A. Al-Kadium, Hussein Al-Shahin

Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal

This study aimed to determine Fe ,Pb , Mn ,Se, Cu ,and Zn levels in the blood of children with anemia , living at Al- Najaf City ,as indicators of environmental pollution in this city. Sixty five children (mean age 7.8 ±0.5) including 34 girls , 28 boys having anemia and the ages matched healthy children 29 girls and 28 boys ,were studied .We observed iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in 35 child (16 girls ,19 boys) ,and only anemia (OA) in 30 child (15 girls ,15 boys). It was found that significant difference of Hb, PCV ,MCV (P<0.01) , and ferritin(P<0.001) values in IDA patients (both girls and boys)were found, when compared with healthy children. The results show that there are significantly higher levels of Pb , Mn , and Zn ,in the serum of children in (IDA) group( both girls and boys) in comparison with their control groups . While Se , and Cu levels were significantly lower in (OA) and(IDA) groups , girls and boys, as related to their control groups. In conclusion ,children with iron deficient anemia are more sensitive to the pollutants and more at risk as compared to healthy children . Their bloods are considered as an index of biologically active metals in the body, reflecting direct interaction of atmosphericpollution of a population.

The specific activities of some purine metabolism enzymes [Adenosine deaminase (ADA), AMP-deaminase, 5`-nucleotidase (5`- NT) and xanthine oxidase (the two forms: xanthine oxidase (XO) and xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH)], were measured in sera of control (n=45) and patients with prostate cancer (n=47).Sera ADA and AMPdeaminase specific activities in prostate cancer were significantly decreased (p<0.001) when compared with control group. By contrast there was significant increase (p<0.001) in 5`-NT specific activity observed in sera of prostate cancer. The activities of xanthine oxidase (XO) (the oxidase and the dehydrogenase activities) were the results revealed no detectable oxidase activities of XO in sera of prostate cancer. Where as, the dehydrogenase activity of this enzyme show significant decrease (p<0.001) in comparism to control group. Two forms and three forms of ADA were found in sera of control andprostate cancer patients respectively as judged by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis .Three forms of 5`-NT were found in sera of prostate cancer patients and control. One forms of AMP-deaminase was detected in the sera of control and prostate cancer patients. ADA, AMPdeaminase, 5`-NT and (XO, XDH) enzymes may be used as a biochemical markers in prostate cancer patients to help the early diagnosis.
