El Nino Southern Oscillation-Related Salinity Variations Recorded In The Skeletal Geochemistry Of A Porites Coral From Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, K. H. Kilbourne, Terrence M. Quinn, Frederick W. Taylor, Thierry Delcroix, Yves Gouriou
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Coral skeletal geochemistry offers the potential to reconstruct the sea surface salinity (SSS) history of the tropical oceans on seasonal to interannual and perhaps centennial timescales because of the strong link between variation in SSS and seawater δ18O in tropical regions. We explore this potential using a monthly resolved, 65‐year record of skeletal δ18O and Sr/Ca variations in a Porites coral from Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. We demonstrate that El Niño–Southern Oscillation–related climate variability strongly influences coral δ18O at Santo through local salinity changes associated with the position of the South Pacific Convergence Zone and …

Single Cell Gap Transflective Liquid Crystal Display With Slanted Reflector Above Transmissive Pixels, Shin-Tson Wu, Yi-Pai Huang, Han-Ping Shieh, Y Zhu
UCF Patents
Single cell gap transflective liquid crystal display which provides that the backlight traverses the reflective pixel portion twice and thereby follows a path similar to that of the ambient light. A slant reflector is built on the path of the back light to reflect the transmitted light to the reflective portion so that the back light and ambient light follow similar paths.

Programmable Multiwavelength Modelocked Laser, Peter Delfyett, Trino Croeze, Eric Park, Hong Shi
UCF Patents
A programmable multiwavelength modelocked laser system. Embodiments of the system can use a computer, gratings, optical spectrum analyzer and SLM(spatial light modulator) inside of a laser cavity to control output amplitudes and phase of each of the wavelength channels of a multiple wavelength laser system. The programmable control allows for wavelength intensity(amplitude) levels of up to approximately 16 channels to be controlled and evened out. An InGaAsP SOA based modelocked multiwavelength ring laser is stabilized using a programmable liquid crystal spatial light modulator in a feedback control loop. The system produces 16 independent modelocked RZ wavelength channels at 10 GHz …

A Study Of The Factors Of Home Life That Are Common Among Students In Special Education Which May Influence Behavior Problems In School, Jenise R. Hillian
A Study Of The Factors Of Home Life That Are Common Among Students In Special Education Which May Influence Behavior Problems In School, Jenise R. Hillian
Theses and Dissertations
The two purposes of this study were to (a) determine if there are factors of home life that are common among students in special education which may influence behavior problems in school; and (b) evaluate possible solutions to help to decrease the behavior problems. Twelve students in special education at a high school in New Jersey were selected to be the subjects of the study based on their consistent occurrences of disciplinary problems. The parents of the students completed a questionnaire concerning home life and quality time spent on certain activities with the family. The results from the survey revealed …

Deucon: Distributed End-To-End Utilization Control For Real-Time Systems, Xiaorui Wang, Chenyang Lu, Xenofon Koutsoukos
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This paper presents the Distributed End-to-end Utiization CONtrol (DEUCON) algorithm. DEUCON can dynamically enforce desired CPU utilizations on all processors in a dis-tributed real-time system despite uncertainties in the system workload. In contrast to earlier centralized control schemes, DEUCON is a distributed control algorithm that is system-atically designed based on the Distributed Model Predictive Control theory. We decompose the global multi-processor utilization control problem into a set of localized subprob-lems, and design a peer-to-peer control structure where each local controller only needs to coordinate with a small number of neighbor processors. DEUCON can provide utilization guarantees similar to a centralized …
Towards Predictable Service Provision In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Rohan Sen, Gregory Hackmann, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill
Towards Predictable Service Provision In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Rohan Sen, Gregory Hackmann, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This paper considers the technical challenges associated with the development of applications designed to work over mobile ad hoc net-works (MANETs). The setting is one in which a miniature application core residing on a mobile host with limited resources is able to support a complex application in a changing open environment by exploiting ser-vices made available by other hosts it encounters. The proposed solution extends in a novel way the applicability of the service provision paradigm to the ad hoc wireless setting. The novelty of the approach rests with the accumulation and management of knowledge about the service structure and …
