Host-Pathogen Dynamics Underpinning Staphylococcus Aureus Growth During Intracellular Osteoclast Infection, Luke D. O'Connor

Bone infection is most commonly caused by the gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. It has myriad ways in which it can circumvent or subvert killing by the host or antibiotics. Intracellular infection is one such niche that is protective from immune and antibiotic attack. In 2019, Krauss and colleagues discovered that infected osteoclasts (OCs) allow S. aureus to replicate intracellularly. There they found that the ability of S. aureus to grow inside the cell was tied to OC differentiation. The magnitude of overnight bacterial expansion positively correlated with OC maturity and duration cultured with the osteoclastogenic factor RANK ligand (RANKL). Bacterial …

Black women in the United States experience maternal mortality at more than three times the rate of white women, a disparity driven by chronic stress rooted in structural racism rather than individual behavior or biology. Accessible, culturally responsive tools for managing stress during pregnancy remain scarce. This mixed-methods pilot feasibility study examined Perinatal Havening, a self-administered psychosensory technique, as a stress management intervention for pregnant Black women. Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) in the upper extremity results in significant sensorimotor impairment. Nearly 40-50% of patients affected by PNI fail to restore normal hand and arm function and recovery remains variable. Recovery related cortical plasticity is recognized as an important factor, though its relationship to meaningful outcomes remains unclear. This dissertation examined how cortical activity patterns relate to functional recovery after PNI through a systematic review and three subsequent cross-sectional studies.

When Canada overhauled its income tax to include capital gains in 1972, lawmakers suddenly had to decide how to deal with personal home sales. After heated debate, they opted to exclude the gains on an individual’s principal residence on the grounds that the core purpose of a home is to provide “basic shelter” for its owner-occupants.

The principal residence tax exemption has since become one of Canada’s biggest tax shelters and now amounts to one of Canada’s largest tax subsidies to individuals. Background: With young adults' rates of mental health problems alarmingly high, understanding resilience characteristics that help young people adapt, adjust, and even thrive in the face of stress is a pressing need. This study takes a daily diary approach, examining four resilience factors, measured a priori, covering multiple domains. Young adults' daily stress responses (reactivity, recovery, inertia) during the globally stressful lockdown period three years later were then explored as key outcomes. Methods: Leveraging two waves of data, young adults (ages 17–25, N = 108) completed demographic and psychometric measures at Wave 1. In Modernity’s Alternative, Rocco Buttiglione presents the Argentinian theology of the people as an alternative to modernity as it has developed in Europe and North America. After an introduction, the first main part of this review essay discusses Buttiglione’s account of the development of the theology of the people and the major figures in it and how the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe marks the beginning of an alternative modernity. The second section considers Buttiglione’s parallel between Christian Platonists’ inculturation of Christian faith into Greek culture and Guadalupe’s inculturation of Christian faith into Mesoamerican culture. This essay examines the constitutions of the Republic of Sudan and minority rights, with a focus on Armenians in that country.  It provides (1) the demographics of Sudan; (2) an overview of the Armenians of Sudan; (3) a history of Sudan’s constitutions; (4) an analysis of their provisions and related laws on minority rights, citizenship, naturalization, and inheritance; (5) an overview of Sudan’s civil war, which began on April 15, 2023, and (6) a concluding section which analyzes risks to Armenians and other religious and ethnic minorities in Sudan.
