Apparatus And Method For Providing Low-Loss Transmission Lines In Interconnected Mesh Plane Systems, Leonard W. Schaper Oct 2004

Apparatus And Method For Providing Low-Loss Transmission Lines In Interconnected Mesh Plane Systems, Leonard W. Schaper

Patents Granted

Describes an interconnected mesh plane system that includes at least a pair of adjacent metal layers separated by dielectric, each layer having a plurality of spaced power, ground, and signal conductors extending in the same direction, with the conductors of one layer of the pair transverse to the conductors of the other layer, and with conductors of one layer connected to corresponding conductors of the other layer. The width of at least one signal conductor is increased to reduce signal loss, and the width of spaces between such a signal conductor and adjacent power and/or ground conductors is increased to …

Hohenberg-Kohn Theory Including Spin Magnetism And Magnetic Fields, Walter Kohn, Andreas Savin, Carsten A. Ullrich Oct 2004

Hohenberg-Kohn Theory Including Spin Magnetism And Magnetic Fields, Walter Kohn, Andreas Savin, Carsten A. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Beginning with work by U. von Earth and L. Hedin in 1972 and continuing with recent papers in 2001 by K. Capelle and G. Vignale and by H. Eschrig and W. E. Pickett, questions have been raised about the meaning and validity of Hohenberg-Kohn theory when spin magnetism and/or magnetic fields are present. This article offers clarifications of some of these questions. in particular, it also concludes that these questions do not affect spin-density functional theory for nondegenerate ground states as currently practiced. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Performance Evaluation Of A Resource Discovery Service, Jue Wang Oct 2004

Performance Evaluation Of A Resource Discovery Service, Jue Wang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In a pervasive computing environment, the number and variety of resources (services, devices, and contextual information resources) make it necessary for applications to accurately discover the best ones quickly. Thus a resource-discovery service, which locates specific resources and establishes network connections as better resources become available, is necessary for those applications. The performance of the resource-discovery service is important when the applications are in a dynamic and mobile environment. In this thesis, however, we do not focus on the resource- discovery technology itself, but the evaluation of the scalability and mobility of the resource discovery module in Solar, a context …

National Program Assessment, Animal Health: 2000-2004, Cyril G. Gay Oct 2004

National Program Assessment, Animal Health: 2000-2004, Cyril G. Gay

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

National Program Assessments are conducted every five-years through the organization of one or more workshop. Workshops allow the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to periodically update the vision and rationale of each National Program and assess the relevancy, effectiveness, and responsiveness of ARS research. The National Program Staff (NPS) at ARS organizes National Program Workshops to facilitate the review and simultaneously provide an opportunity for customers, stakeholders, and partners to assess the progress made through the National Program and provide input for future modifications to the National Program or the National Program’s research agenda. A workshop for Animal Health has been …

Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction In A Nearly One-Dimensional Sample Of Rydberg Atoms, Thomas J. Carroll, Katharine Claringbould, Anne Goodsell, M. J. Lim, Michael W. Noel Oct 2004

Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction In A Nearly One-Dimensional Sample Of Rydberg Atoms, Thomas J. Carroll, Katharine Claringbould, Anne Goodsell, M. J. Lim, Michael W. Noel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Atoms in an ultracold highly excited sample are strongly coupled through the dipole-dipole interaction. In an effort to understand and manipulate the complicated interactions in this system we are investigating their dependence on the relative orientation of the dipoles. By focusing a 480 nm beam from a tunable dye laser into a magneto-optical trap, we produce a nearly one-dimensional sample of Rydberg atoms. The trap lies at the center of four conducting rods with which we can vary the magnitude and direction of the electric field at the trap, thus controlling the orientation of the dipoles with respect to the …

Preemption Under The Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act: If It Looks Like A Securities Fraud Claim And Acts Like A Securities Fraud Claim, Is It A Securities Fraud Claim?, Jennifer O'Hare Oct 2004

Preemption Under The Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act: If It Looks Like A Securities Fraud Claim And Acts Like A Securities Fraud Claim, Is It A Securities Fraud Claim?, Jennifer O'Hare

Working Paper Series

This Article addresses the removal and preemption provisions of the Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act of 1998 (“SLUSA”). In SLUSA, Congress preempted class actions alleging “an untrue statement or omission of a material fact in connection with the purchase or sale of a covered security.” SLUSA clearly applies to preempt the typical state securities fraud action, forcing plaintiffs into federal court where they will be subject to the rigorous procedural requirements of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Preemption of false corporate publicity cases was expected and, in fact, intended by SLUSA. However, many courts have also extended …
